Why am I an artist?
A letter to my future self.
Ok, here we go… where do you start? Or, rather, when did you start, or… did you ever start, or did you just continue to create from before you were born into this body, into this world. Drawing from when you were two years old, drawing lines with a stick in the sand. You respond to a deep urge to create images, images that appeal to the imagination, i.e. your’s and the viewers’ imaginative powers. Drawing is magical, it creates new realities. However, you also seem to love kitsch and camp and easily cross the line between art and kitsch, e.g. the exuberant, the eccentric, the decorative…  in bad, good or (in)different taste. Hyperrealist, surrealism, dada, neo-pop, superrealist, graphic novel, cosmic, mercurial, hyperkinetic, multi-layered, multidimensional, calligraphy, chinoiserie. You create your own art history, mixing media and mixing messages. Enjoy the ride. —Lode Coen (to myself), May 2019
A letter to my past self.
Hello Lode, our memories create our identity. So you are a result of all those memories collated, combined, collected and concatenated in who you think you are right now, even the ones from just a moment ago. Some memories are inspiring, some are examples of cognitive dissonance. However the most important ones that define your ever-changing identity are fused with feelings and emotions. All of your designs and art you created over the years, leave you with imprints, a direct memories of who you were and what you were doing at that moment. They say, that when one dies, one sees a film of one’s life in one’s minds eye. This film is illustrated by your art. Some events almost are dreamlike, and it appears our subconsciousness doesn't make a difference between dream and reality. Looking back, nevertheless these images must fill you with joy, for the gift of such a creative life. —Lode Coen (to myself), May 2019
