KING RELD, Letters Home | Handmade dress | The dress was made for the Spirit Fashion Show put on by CMU students in 2018. It was part of a collection of pieces called Crossing and illuminated themes of the many immigration crises. This dress in particular is called Letters Home and shows a connection to the “homeland”. It was just in use for a film in collaboration with The Spectacular House and Slowdanger, which I thought made it pretty special. If you don’t like that it looks like it has a history, I can refurbish it. I think it makes it more valuable that it has been touched by many hands.

MF Shop Featured Artist - Kevin Clancy
UTOPIA OR OBLIVION
OTHER WORLDS ARE POSSIBLE
These are the messages of Kevin Clancy’s work.
Kevin graduated from the Studio for Interrelated Media program at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2010. He is now based in Pittsburgh, at 3577 Studios, and specializes in durational works that get activated by people.
In his current body of work, though, action is implied. Cast hands of ghostly white gesture over iridescent screens—cracked or whole. Sometimes—as is the case with The uniquity of loneliness and Closer together, further apart—they meet another on the other side. The implied action, then, is simultaneously denied, and the frozen casts form a future relic of today. The dichroic film masks any information on the device, and instead reflects back at you.
Each piece invites a different conversation that, whether because of the position of the hand or the type of device casted, can be swayed by personal experience. As technology advances, so will the conversation develop: “How is user interaction shaping how we perceive the world?”
“I’m coming at it from ‘this is my lived experience of the world,’” Kevin says, “but there’s so much more to it than that.”
Kevin exhibited at the Mattress Factory in 2015 and 2016, and his work explores the tension between utopia and oblivion. He recently showed at West Virginia University, is currently showing at Penn State University, and has an upcoming solo show at Bunker Projects this October.   Original work by Kevin Clancy is available online and in-store at the MF Shop.

Corrine Jasmin: tread
New in the MF Shop: tread, a book of poetry by local artist Corrine Jasmin.
Corrine Jasmin wrote the 49 poems that comprise tread, her first book, in the span of one year. The poems depict her life over three years, and in that time, the 2016 presidential election provoked what she calls “a lot of heavy.” The book is about navigating through mental health issues. More specifically, anyone who reads tread will follow Jasmin on her journey out of that heavy.
The experiences and emotions recorded on the pages of tread are deeply evocative; at times sorrowful, at others empowering. “This is the most raw and honest I’ve been,” says Jasmin, “at least with the art that I share with others.” On the whole, Jasmin’s art draws from personal experience and is centered around social commentary. In addition to writing, Jasmin works in photography, film, video, and mixed media.
Jasmin is currently touring tread in Philadelphia, New York City, D.C., and Richmond. Though she does readings and performs select works from the book, Jasmin describes tread as a collection of poetry that is “meant to be sat with.”
Jasmin holds a B.A. in Screenwriting from Point Park University and has performed at various venues in Pittsburgh. Favorites include Bunker Projects and BOOM Concepts.
Her book is now available online and in-store at the MF Shop.

Rob Voerman, “Faculty,” 2015 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This work reflects one of Pittsburgh’s most famous landmarks, the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning. This piece consists of a geometric structure that partially resembles a fragment of that building. The cardboard structure is extended and the inside is both dark and light, with outside sound being filtered, therefore allowing the space to become like a small classroom that also resembles a capsule. The space was designed to fit approximately 20 visitors inside. #MFArchives #cathedraloflearning (at Mattress Factory - Museum of Contemporary Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/Btwct1Ph1Sj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1aliwo8nv94ye
