These are some of the storyboard ideas I’ve created for my animation. I wanted the animation to represent a dream so each frame has a different perspective. I linked each idea to make them seem continuous as if it was reflecting the many different dreams we have at night. Some of the ideas are more nightmarish while some are more surreal and hallucinogenic. Some scenes will have very bright colours as I wanted to relate parts of the animation to the 60s psychedelic era as many of the ideas I got at the start of this topic where from artists from that era. This is because I was interested in how artist’s work was affected by different Psychedelics like mushrooms.

For my final peice Animation I’d like to interpret the theme of dreams, as they can often be very surreal and unusual. During a nights sleep we have many different dreams but we only remember the unusual and abstract ones, while we forget the less interesting ones. I like the idea of being able to jump into different dreams and different experiences you’ll have in each dream as the settings and vibes can be very different. Dreams and psychedelia have many similarities. The mindset you have after you eat a mushroom can decide wether you have a good or bad experience. This is very similar to dreams as you can have a nightmares due to a weak or unbalanced mindset. Throughout dreams and hallucinations you can find ways to control the mood. One way is lucid dreaming as you can control and create what you want and what you do using dreams.
Astro projection is also seen as dreamlike/trippy. It is a term used to describe an out of body experience. It is the separation of the physical body and soul and is capable of travelling thoughout the universe. Astral projection is sometimes reported in association with dreams, forms of meditation and also hallucinogenic trips.
In my animation I’d like to create something that can relate to all of these topics and thoughts. I’ll do this by changing perspectives and transforming and merging surroundings and characters together which will create an unusual setting and surreal atmosphere.

This was an animation I created of Milton Glasers Bob Dylan poster. I decided to animate his hair in a fluid motion style to depict his mind flowing with ideas. Influenced by the 60’s psychedelic era, I tried to reflect this style in the animation.
To convey this effect,  I redrew each frame in order to depict organic growth of the image, representing movement and fluidity of organic matter, similar to the life form of the mushroom.

This is a different variation of an the animation I made.

I also made these 2 versions of just the hair flowing

Animation of mushroom
I decided to take a part of the Milton Glaser inspired artwork and find a way to transform it into a mushroom. I illustrated frames of the hair by animating each segment in different shades of brown. This was to give it a more natural fungi look as the underneath of a mushroom head is normally darker in colour. The fast timeline of the animation represents the rapid growth of mushrooms and how they can spread organically and extremely fast.

Using the animation and Milton Glasers Bob Dylan poster I changed the colours of the mushroom to stand out. The colour palette used are similar colours used to make the Bob Dylan poster. This represents the image of the mushrooms in a poisonous or phycadelic theme.

This is an animation inspired by Robert Wesley Wilson. I drew up a similar font but changed the wording on this peice. I also wanted to make it feel a lot more life-like to reflect the organic nature of the mushroom. I redrew the mushroom on another frame to make it vibrate to show that it’s alive matter. I also animated the surroundings to make them look like spores coming out of the head of the mushrooms.
The patterns of colour in the mushroom are the women from the original peice of work I recreated. To cover the mushroom I copied and pasted a few copies of the women to surround the mushroom.

I wanted to create my own interpretation of this design, by recreating this drawing using layers I was able to change different parts of the work, also by removing the line work and adding more hatching in the women. As my FMP is about mushrooms I wanted to change the colours of the drawings to make it stand out more and give it more of a pyscaldelic theme. To do this I chose a bright palette to contrast  with some darker ones in order to compliment each other eg purple and orange.
I created 2 different versions of this work with 5 different colour palette variations. One with the line art and one without. In the first version I illustrated I wanted to represent the growth of mushrooms and how they can spread easily, because they are a type of fungus and can grow rapidly. I decided to fill the women up with lines which shows the rapid growth of mushrooms as she’s full of lines. Some mushrooms can spread by spores, so each line in the women could represent one of the spores that could end up growing into another mushroom. The lines are all flowing in certain directions which makes it stand out and look psychedelic.
In the other version of Robert Wesley Wilsons artwork I decided to remove the lines by deleting the top layer which left just the solid colour. This stands out as there’s nothing to distract the the viewer from the typography as the abstract figure feels like it’s part of pyscadelic design, rather then an additional object.

This is the original work by Robert Wesley Wilson a poster for a music festival, features trippy text

To create this image I used Adobe Animate. I created 2 layers, then traced the women, blocking out the hatching areas, then I created a new blank frame and used onion skin layering, so I could see the previous frame of the women I drew. I redrew this image tracing my old drawing while adding the hatching lines to create darkness. Then on another layer I traced the wording and added colour.

I illustrated a story board to show what each frame of the animation would look like.

These animations were inspired by Amanda cobbetts mushroom work. She creates realistic 3D, paper mache and machine embroidered sculptures of fungi.
As I was unable to create a 3D sculpture I decided to make an animation showing a mushroom turning 360 degrees to try an recreate the sense of 3D. Using 2d animation I was able to create something that looks 3D. I found this challenging as I had to maintain the correct proportions in order to make it look realistic.

When we went to summer set house an artist that stood out was Beatrix Potter. This is because unlike most of the other artwork that was on display, which was very abstract, Beatrix Potters artwork was very basic, but detailed. Her work looked living and was very detailed and intricate. I chose these 2 works of hers to redraw as they both looked challenging to draw.
I found it hard to colour her work with a just a pencil as it looked very flat. To overcome this I rubbed out parts that were lighter. I also shaded the dark parts of her work darker then they should of been. This was to try and give it  greater depth.

I redrew segments of this artwork by Picasso using a fine liner. I then coloured the top drawing using different markers and the bottom one using colour pencils. I prefer the use of colour pencils as it looks a lot more vibrant while the other one looks a bit dull and messy.

I created this animation which is inspired by Picasso’s work. I first re-drew his original drawing on the program animate. I then added a few more frames and redrew each peice slightly differently.
The face he drew is very abstract. I wanted to try and morph the face back to normal (but still keep his style). The short animation looks very messy and gives the impression that it is a working drawing progressing through stages of self correcting.

During the first year of this course I have learnt many different skills, such as using the 3D studios and understanding how to adopt a more professional approach to my work. I have developed my skills working with metal, wood and ceramic, as well as technical skills in drawing and developing my draftsmanship through observational drawing. Alongside, I’ve been able to develop and improve on all these skills, through making mistakes and overcoming them with practice which has given me a greater understanding of my strengths and weaknesses during this course. I am probably most confident and proficient using the Adobe CC Animate programme, mainly self taught, I have spent many hours developing my skills and knowledge learning the program, via tutorials and YouTube videos, in helping to create college assignments and for my own personal projects. Initially when I started this course I wasn’t sure what area of Art and Design I wanted to develop and pursue in the future. During the year I have realised I have a passion for creating Animations and illustrations and would like to further my skills by progressing onto further studies At Uni, with the possibility of studying Animation. My FMP project is based on the theme of mushrooms and how we use them. They have been used for hundreds of years spirituality and recreationally. I want to explore both aspects of this in my project from finding artists related to the different ways they are used. The idea of the album cover art also influenced my FMP as there are a lot of musicians who take similar substances to influence their own music, which they show in their cover art. Music and it’s genres have a close link to many different types of drugs. From this I would like to create a surreal animation in which I will convey how they are used spirituality and recreationally, linking old with new, while creating a psychedelic themed animation. The word psychedelic originally comes from two Greek words, psyche which means mind, and Delos which means manifesting. I want to impliment this theme into my own animation showing you what the mind manifesting would look like to me.
To evaluate my project, I am going to share and present all my views and ideas to my tutors, family and friends and listen to their opinions and to any constructive criticism. From this I’ll improve my work and add their opinions. I will also make a small presentation showing my work and development to family and friends asking for their input and comments.

At the beginning of this project we visited 3 different galleries, to explore different art forms. I was drawn to the theme of mushrooms after visiting the exhibition at Somerset House ‘The Art, Design and Future of Fungi’ The exhibition explores the colourful cultural legacy of the humble mushroom and its powerful potential in the planet’s survival
I studied the illustrations of mushrooms and created my own observational drawings. These drawings are short observational studies, spending no more then 10 minutes on each drawing using the mediums of pen and pencil. This was a starting point for my project, showing the initial sketches and then using these to progress onto further developing my ideas into Animations and more detailed illustrations.
