Asa was genuinely surprised when the stranger offered him her drink. A smile groomed itself upon his cheeks, and he rose slightly to reach for the cup. When he held it with both hands, Asa sat back down comfortably. He bit on the inside of his lower lip, unsure of what to respond with. "Uh, thanks!" was all he could muster.       When she told him that, yes, she was alright, he felt a bit guilty. Asa had just assumed the woman was upset, or not feeling 100% -- and what had Bonnie told him? Not to assume! You can't make bricks without clay, and he didn't have any clay. Metaphorical clay, at least.        Her question stumped him, since he wasn't sure how he felt at that moment. "Well, I was okay! But now I'm feeling sorta weird. Sorry if I made you feel weird, too," he told her honestly. His smile faded, and he set the paper cup on his table. "Bonnie told me that tomorrow it's supposed to rain. I can't wait! I love the rain."        Asa hoped that his swift and innocent change of topic would brighten the stranger's face. "I'm Asa, if you wanted to know. If you didn't, then you can just call me whatever you want in your head."

Looking into her cup She shrugged. "I haven’t. She looked up an bit surprised. Who hadn’t tried hot drinks. Didn’t he drink tea or apple cider? "Well, hey here."  She said holding out the cup to him."You can have this, I’m not too fond of pumpkin. I’m not even sure why I got this." Seraphine smiled, looking at the mug and the steam rising off the hot dark orange-ish liquid.
Snapping her eyes up from the cup she raised an eyebrow. Was she ok? "I…yes I’m fine. Are you ok?"  Tilting her head to the side, she was a bit confused. Was she coming off as upset? She usually did, most people thought she was some scared little thing. Which was mostly true. Although she didn’t want to come off that way.

Asa's eyes widened when Tennessee told him he wasn't stupid -- had he assumed that's what Asa meant? "Ah, I -- I didn't mean to say that I thought you were dumb! Sometimes it's hard for people to remember names." He then mentioned a Bonnie and Clyde, but Asa had no idea who they were. "Um, are they popular in San Francisco, or something? I just moved here a few months ago, so..." He trailed off, feeling a bit silly and clueless. He hoped Tennessee wouldn't make fun of him.       When he encouraged Asa to get a dog, Asa clenched his jaw. "Well, Bonnie said we're not allowed to get a pet, 'cause we might move. And she said it's easier to leave if it's just us," he said glumly. He didn't like being so far away from their parents. What if they were worried? Asa was sure Mom missed him, since she always said he was the perfect son for a perfect family.       Tennessee seemed surprised about Greyhounds, and Asa's mood lightened drastically. He gave Zoe one more gentle scratch under her chin, then stuck his hands in his sweater pockets. "Yeah! And in England during the 11th century, there was this law that prevented 'commoners' from owning Greyhounds. Isn't that crazy?" Asa was excited that his new friend seemed interested. "Do you wanna hear another fact? I know a lot. And not just about Greyhounds, but all sorts of dogs."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A genuine laughter escaped his chest, surprising even himself. “I know, Clyde. M’not that stupid.” He smirked, his laughter dying down to a faint chuckle. “You kept goin’ on about a Bonnie and I just… Ya don’t know Bonnie ‘n Clyde?” He asked, just to be sure. He thought every American would know the famous outlaw duo, but maybe Asa wasn’t raised here. He remembered that Bonnie and Clyde had fucked like bunnies on top of robbing banks together, and decided that calling him Clyde wasn’t a good idea when this Bonnie seemed to be Asa’s sister. Ew.
A small frowned appeared on his brow at the brunet’s comment about his parents. But parents did call their children whatever they liked, didn’t they? Technically, that was what names were—chosen by someone else with zero input from the future bearer of the name. It was a weird way of looking at things, though.
"You should get one, then," he suggested plainly, watching the eager way Asa petted the beagle, and resisted the urge to snort very loudly at how comical the other boy’s disappointed face looked. "Really? I woulda imagined it to be cheetahs or somethin’." He’d heard somewhere that Greyhounds were used as racing dogs, but second fastest in the world? That was a little hard to believe.

Asa didn't understand why Tennessee called him Clyde -- hadn't they just introduced themselves? Was his new friend that forgetful? He tried to answer, but the name thing was bothering him.       "Uh, sorry, I don't know if you already forgot, but my name's Asa! I guess you can call me what you like, though, since Bonnie said that's what Mom and Dad did...But, oh! No, I don't have a dog; I wish," Asa huffed, disappointed. He kept petting Zoe, making sure to scratch at her belly, of what he could reach.        He did wish he could have a dog. Maybe a Greyhound -- he was obsessed with that breed. Or a Collie. Either woulda been fine, he wasn't picky. Even a smaller dog like a beagle would be okay. Another sigh trickled from his mouth. He sucked on his bottom lip.       "Hey, did you know that Greyhounds are the second fastest animal in the world? I dunno about the first, but I think that's still pretty cool," he offered then, his disappointment fleeing instantly. It was replaced by a wide smile, waiting to share amazement over Greyhounds and their speed.
Tumblr media
Tennessee hummed noncommittally at Asa’s answer. Who was this Bonnie, anyway? His mom? He knew some parents let their kids call them by their first names—which was plain weird, in his opinion. Perhaps that was due to the way he was raised Southern, in which he was taught to stick ma’ams and sirs at the end of his sentences, never hesitate to apologize, and things like that. Calling one’s parents by their first name was pretty much unimaginable in such an environment.
"Whoa," he muttered to himself, observing the instant intensifying of the boy’s already happy mood. Zoe curiously nosed Asa’s outstretched hand, apparently deciding that the boy was not a threat, and docilely remained still as he began to ruffle her ears. A wide, bright smile was etched upon the other boy’s features; Zoe wagged her tail, nearly bursting in happiness at having her chin scratched. The whole scene was so fucking peaceful and domestic, he was surprised that Asa hadn’t started vomiting rainbows. He liked dogs but not this much. Jesus.
Bored, he twisted and played with the leash to give his hands something to do. The blond looked up from his lap and arched one eyebrow at the obviousness of Asa’s statement. “Clearly,” commented Tennessee in a dry tone. “Ya got your own at home, Clyde?”

The woman was older than him, though he didn't think by many years. She looked a bit surprised to hear him talking, and Asa sucked on his bottom lip. She replied, though, which was great! He liked pumpkin pie, but had never tried anything liquid with a pumpkin flavour. Asa straightened his spine, offering her a bright smile.       "Well, it smells really good -- have you taken a sip yet? You gotta lemme know what it's like. I've never tried a hot drink before, 'cept for hot chocolate. But only ever on Christmas." He was fumbling over his words, speaking them far too quickly to come out of his mouth.        He wanted to sit at her table, so the smell was more strong; but it wasn't polite to intrude on people's space. That's what Bonnie told him, anyway. She told him he had to stand at least an arm's length away from someone, otherwise they would get mad.        Asa fidgeted in his seat, itching to stick his nose right up to the cup's rim so he could smell it. He wondered if the woman was alright, since she looked a bit sad. "Hey, are you okay?"

Seraphine was going on her nightly stroll. She thought it was good to be alone, although she was alone majority of the time. Standing on the corner, waiting for the walking sign to pop up, she wondered where she was going exactly. As the little sign lit up and she made her way into the street she decided to try the little cafe she passed everyday. It looked so chic and fresh that she wondered why she’d never been in it before, since it was in walking distance.
Pushing the door open she smiled at the little bell the chimed. Looking around she decided this could be her new spot. Seraphine quickly made her way to the line and grazed over the menu. As she approached the counter and the barista turned her eyes on Seraphine, she panicked. Ordering a soy pumpkin spice latte she hurried off and waited for her order. Seraphine had never ordered anything pumpkin before. As they called her name she grabbed the dark green mug and sat at the first table she saw. Placing her cup and mug onto the table she took in a deep breath, just as she let it out she heard someone talking, to her. She whipped her head to see a young boy. "Hm? Oh it’s a pumpkin something. I think a latte."  She said looking into the cup.

She informed him that chai was a type of tea, and he tried a smile. He had never tried tea before, either -- 'cept for sweet tea, but he supposed it wasn't really the same. The only hot drink he ever had was hot chocolate, and that was only on Christmas.        At the mention of Bonnie, Asa straightened. "Oh! She's my younger sister. She's really nice, I bet you'd like her lots," he said cheerily, his eyebrows raised. He watched her for a tiny moment as she closed her book, then looked around a bit scared like.       She took the mug in her hands and drank from it, getting some of the whipped cream on her top lip. He started to raise his hand, to point and inform her, but she started licking away at it. Asa looked away, sort of embarrassed.       When she asked with a stutter if he wanted a cup, Asa snapped his eyes back on her. He couldn't get her to buy him a drink! That wasn't what a gentleman let happen. He was supposed to offer her something to drink, and then maybe buy her a biscuit or a cookie, as well. Asa cleared his throat at her offer of sitting with her. He was secretly pleased she had offered first.       Asa rose from his seat cautiously, hoping not to startle her. "I'd love to sit with you; I bet you have great stories to tell. You look like you do," he said a bit too quickly. Asa tried to turn back time, but obviously it wouldn't work since he was not a time traveller. He pursed his lips, hoping she wouldn't be creeped out.        "My name's Asa, since we're sharing a table, and you're offering to buy me a chai tea. But -- hey -- don't worry about it, about buying me a tea! I've got some change that Bonnie gave me before she left for work today. She takes care of all the finances because I'm not good with money." Asa inhaled deeply after spitting that all out in one breath. He tried not to be too noisy, though, since Bonnie told him that he breathed in too loudly when he talked a lot.

The female frowned, seeing as if the male’s emotions went from zero to sixty in a matter of moments. This was because of my reaction, wasn’t it? she questioned herself with a heavy internal sigh, shaking her head mentally as she forced a smile at the male before her. The doe-eyed female disliked being the one to cause pain to others on the basis of her becoming frightened so, so easily.
Licking her lips and fluttering her eyelashes as she tried to remember what she was going to go on about, the male had responded to her comment. “Doesn’t it?” She inhaled deeply, nodding her head. “Chai is a tea, I-I don’t know who Bonnie is, though… I apologize.” Furrowing her brows, the woman looked at him confused, marking the page of her book with her finger and closing it once more — she hadn’t gotten very far — just surpassing two chapters since sitting in her seat, but she didn’t mind the intrusion; Emile was sure her eyes were thanking her for giving them a break.
Unsure of what to say next, she chewed on her chapped lips a bit nervously, her brown eyes glancing back to her book, then the cup of warm tea, still steaming as the marshmallow and whipped cream began to melt into an assortment of delectable flavors. Taking the cup to her lips, her eyes then followed the male once more, licking the froth from her upper lip as she lowered her cup. “W-would you like me to buy you one? You can come sit with me if you wish.”

Asa laughed at the other's observation, but still wanted to respect her. "I guess you're right, but -- Bonnie'd be real mad with me if I didn't give Zoe respect." He fiddled with his thumbs, eyes peering out towards the park instead. It felt good to sit in the brisk air, the sounds of happy children and concerned parents and the occasional dog bark filling it.       The stranger told him Zoe wouldn't bite him if he pet her, and excitement swelled up in his chest. He then offered up his name, which was Tennessee. That was a state, but also the name of a playwright. Mom let him watch some of his stuff on the TV, but Asa never really understood them. He preferred cartoons and Harry Potter.       When Tennessee sat Zoe down on the bench, Asa lit up so fast and so brightly he was sure to burst. "I hope I won't, but thanks!" He let the dog sniff his hand first, making sure not to scare her. Bonnie taught him not to make any sudden movements around animals, because they could hurt him if they got scared. He waited for her to finish sniffing, and then began petting her behind the ears.       A minute or so went by, Asa's smile never leaving his face. He zoned out a moment, so content with just being able to touch a dog. He loved dogs. "I love dogs," he echoed his thoughts. Asa kept rubbing her head, one hand scratching under her chin. She seemed happy enough, so Asa didn't stop.
Tumblr media
Resisting the urge to roll his eyes dramatically at the brunet’s oblivious answer, Tennessee simply nodded. Okay, don’t be rude, he chastised himself silently. The sweet, clueless, and innocent boy-next-door type. He could deal.
He blinked, suddenly curious. The boy seemed to be around his age, if not slightly older. However, the way he worded things had a strong childlike quality to it. Tennessee couldn’t quite put his finger on it but it was there. It was almost as if the boy were completely inexperienced with the real world—which was an absurd notion. “Well, Bonnie’s right… whoever that is. But Zoe’s a dog, in case ya haven’t noticed,” he continued with a smirk. “She’s not gonna understand a lick of what you say.”
Tumblr media
"Depends on what you mean by nice,” he replied dryly. Zoe was a relatively well-behaved dog, but at times she could get insanely hyper and overexcited. “She’s not gonna, like, bite your head off or anything, if that’s what you’re askin’.”
Asa? That was a weird name. But he supposed he wasn’t in any place to say stuff like that when his own name was Tennessee. Ha. “S’nice to meet you too. I’m Tennessee.” The blond shifted awkwardly in his seat, suddenly feeling like a five-year-old making friends at a playground. “Here ya go. Now you can stop makin’ puppy dog eyes at me,” he said, rolling his eyes a little. He gently set down the beagle on the bench. “Knock yourself out.”

Asa felt a pang of guilt swallow him whole when the female stammered out in shock. He hadn't meant to make her so frightened, and it instantly began to nibble at his insides. She looked so fragile, with her eyes wide like that. Asa sucked on his bottom lip and waited for her response to conclude.       She finally pointed at the drink, coming around to answer him fully. Asa beamed at her, trying to appear encouraging. He still felt plenty guilty for scaring her like that, but was happy she could finish. "It smells really great; I might buy myself a cup. What sorta thing is chai? Is it coffee? Bonnie says I'm not allowed coffee."       He wanted to close his notebook and maybe ask if he could sit with her, ask her what book she was reading. But knew that Bonnie would be mad. He was only allowed to make friends with people if Bonnie said it was okay, because she knew who was good and who was bad.        Asa didn't want to startle her even more, so he used his quiet voice. He tried to make sure it wasn't too scary or loud, because Asa didn't like it when people cried -- and the woman looked like she was gonna cry any second if he made another scary noise.

Setting the steaming hot chai tea — topped with whipped cream, chocolate, colored sprinkles which hid a few marshmallows, the long-haired customer took a seat, adjusting her long, slender legs as she made herself comfortable. Her hands pulled the book that had been tucked underneath her arm, setting it on the table and opening it to the freshly marked page, taking shelter from the light sprinkle that tickled her nose and freckled face. With a sigh, she wiped the rainwater from her face, digging back into the last page she had read.
The Latina furrowed her eyebrows, her deep brown eyes shoved so closely to the book, that one might fear they would start picking the ink and dust that such a novel had encountered during its years. The binding was rough and frayed; pages torn at the edges and a damp rain smell came from the pages as they were flipped. However, Emile didn’t mind. It was a Tolkien novel, and one of her favorite writers at that.
Her eyes snapped up to the male, a blush creeping over her brown face. “I-I… M-my…” she stammered, sinking into her chair as she spoke. She rarely spoke to others, and his comment had startled her. “M-my…” her brown eyes looked to her drink, pointing a finger towards it. “This? Um… chai? With whipped cream and marshmallows. I think there’s chocolate a-a-at the b-b-bottom, too?”

Asa didn't notice the sarcasm in the male's voice, or the fact that he was patronizing him. He just smiled wider, shaking his head. "No, but thanks for your concern. I bring my inhaler everywhere, though, so I would be okay." He picked at a loose thread on the cuff of his sweater sleeve.       The male had a funny accent, but Asa remembered lots of people had different voices and made different sounds, because that's how they learned them; Bonnie told him he wasn't allowed to point this fact out to anyone, ever. She said it was rude. "That's a nice name," Asa piped up, after hearing it. "I'm glad I didn't ask what 'his' name was, because then I woulda gotten her gender wrong. Bonnie said I shouldn't assume genders, because sometimes it upsets people." Asa offered another smile, his eyes wandering towards Zoe.        His hand was itching to pet the dog, since he hadn't played with a dog in ages. But Bonnie's voice creeped into his head, telling him not to pet strangers' dogs, since they could bite him. They didn't have any money to go to the doctor.       "Is she a nice dog?" Asa inquired, still watching the dog. He really wanted to pet her. Maybe if he looked hopeful enough, the nice dog sitter would let him. Asa turned his attention back on the other. "I'm Asa, by the way. It's really nice to meet you and your neighbour's dog."
Tumblr media
What a fucking asshole, he thought, glaring at the retreating man’s back. At least the smell was gone now. Without even sparing a glance at his fellow bench occupant, the blond sat down. His hands itched with a strong desire to wave the lingering smoke away. A sudden image of his house in Galveston appeared in his mind. Yellowed walls, creaking staircases, and the distinct smell of cigarettes—and he couldn’t get it out no matter how many times he let the fresh air in, because Wyatt would stomp in and lit his cigarettes just as frequently as he opened the windows.
I never liked the smell of cigarettes. Tennessee immediately looked up, silently grateful for the interruption. One eyebrow raised, he surveyed the stranger, who’d been rather quiet throughout the whole thing, and briefly wondered why he’d decided to speak up all of a sudden. He decided to shoot the boy a wry, lopsided smile. “Hope you didn’t get a boo-boo or somethin’,” he quipped, his tone that of sardonic amusement.
Tumblr media
He gently tugged at the leash as the beagle excitedly sniffed at the shoes of the brunet. “She’s my neighbor’s dog. I s’mtimes dog-sit,” he explained plainly. “Her name’s Zoe.”

dreamy days in cafés ; asa ~ open
Asa had been scribbling in a shitty notebook for over two hours, in a cute café he had found on one of his daily strolls. It wasn't anything special, just doodles of Bonnie and stickman cartoons. He hadn't noticed the time, and didn't really care.       A barista came over to wipe down the nearby tables and asked if he needed anything. Asa looked up, smiling. "Nope; thanks, though!" The barista smiled back and finished cleaning.       The bell above the café's entrance chimed lightly, and Asa looked up absentmindedly. The customer ended up sitting at the table beside him. The drink they had gotten smelled really good, and he wasn't sure if he was allowed to ask them what it was. Bonnie told him to be careful talking to strangers.      "Um, sorry if I'm interrupting you! But I wanted to know what sorta drink you're having. It smells really nice," he tried. Asa kept his expression light. He hoped to get an answer, and not something mean. Not a lot of people, especially strangers, liked it when Asa bothered them.

Asa had only lived in San Francisco for three months, and was still trying to find his footing. His sister had found hers all too quickly, which made him worry; what if he got lost? Since they didn't have cellphones ("They can track us via GPS, you cinderblock."), there was no way to get ahold of Bonnie if he was in trouble.        He had been taking little walks during the days when the sun was warm to find inspiration for his latest painting. He loved the sky, especially at night, but clouds were just as nice. They were like star blankets when they were sleeping. A smile blossomed on his lips as he walked, hands in his sweater pockets.       There was a nice park nearby that he loved to visit. Asa took to sitting on the bench, where a man sat smoking a cigarette. Bonnie smoked a lot, but he hated the smell; he always made her smoke outside on the balcony. A male Asa's age wandered close, a look of disgust smeared into his features. When his voice broke the gentle ambience, Asa looked up.       Innocent shock inhabited Asa's face, his eyes wide. The man smoking kissed his teeth, taking a long drag. He flicked the cigarette butt onto the pavement, not even bothering to stomp out the ember. Asa scrambled to stomp it out for him after the man had started off in another direction.       "I never liked the smell of cigarettes; they make my lungs hurt," he offered up. His tone of voice was eager, but slightly timid. Asa hoped the other male wouldn't roll his eyes -- he had a nice dog. "What's your dog's name? They're really cute."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tennessee glanced at the stranger next to him, his hands firmly clutching the leash of his neighbor’s beagle. The smell of smoke entered his nostrils and filled up his lungs with filthy air. Wasn’t it illegal or something, smoking in public parks? He didn’t consider himself as a stickler for rules, and neither did he give two shits if someone wanted to spend money on guaranteed cancer in packets. But the fucking smell, it was—
“‘Scuse me,” he spoke, fiddling with his end of the leash. The dog looked up at the sound of his voice. “Do you mind puttin’ that out?”

Asa B. Jones ★ Male ★ 23 ★ Grocery store clerk ★ Heterosexual
When he was six, Jordan Tamblyn was taken from his hometown of Camborne, in England. The couple who picked him up after school on a spring afternoon claimed to be his aunt and uncle — didn’t he remember them? They said they would bring him home after dinner, as his mother was busy and had bumped into them earlier that day. He never returned home, nor did he ever return to England.
The couple, a Mr. and Mrs. Jones, kept him safe and warm in a cottage by the sea. They had conditioned him over the course of a few months to only answer to Asa B. Jones. They fed him lies about being his real parents, telling him that his mother back in Camborne had adopted him. Being such a young child, he became quickly ensnared in their web. His mind was fresh and pliable, mouldable. It was so simple for the couple.
The moment he believed the lies truly, the Jones family took the first plane to America. They had a home there, a very nice one. Better than the cottage they had lived in for just under a year. Asa was overjoyed, as he had always wanted to visit America. It was true, what they said about the home; it was not too big, and not too small, and fit the three of them perfectly.
When Asa was 9, he met his first sister. She was a bit older than him, and he didn’t like her at all. She was really mean and cried all day and night up in her room. One night, Asa heard a few shouts, a scream, and then a scramble down the stairs. He thought it was a monster, so he stayed put under his blankets. His sister wasn’t at breakfast the next morning, nor would she ever be again.
The Jones’ wanted one girl and one boy. That was the rule of the American Family. You had to have one boy and one girl, and one mom and one dad. Asa had just started high school when his parents brought home another girl. She was also older, and claimed she was sixteen. Claimed she had a mother and a father and a younger sister waiting for her at her own home, in New York.
She stayed for a long time. Asa had just graduated high school at eighteen when she went away. Mister Jones was angry for weeks, always hiding in his special office on the third floor. Asa heard crying for a day or two after she left, but didn’t clue in at all that it could have been her. Mr. Jones eventually integrated himself back into their daily routine, and things went back to normal.
The Jones informed Asa one day in April, when he was twenty-one, that he would have a new sister. They were planning on foster caring for her, since she was still in the system for another year. This girl Bonnie, Asa’s new sister (now renamed as Emma), would be the downfall of the Jones family. She was too quiet in the beginning, fidgety and scared of every sound and touch. Asa eventually had her warm up to him, and at that point — she didn’t leave his side. One night during the winter, she told him that they had to leave. If they didn’t leave, Dad would hurt her, and she wouldn’t come back. Asa wasn’t sure what she meant at the time, but as she infected him with the itch to leave, he questioned everything his mother and father told them.
A month before his twenty-third birthday, Emma woke him up in the middle of the night wearing her thick winter coat and a knapsack. She threw his coat at him, told him to get dressed, and pack anything he wanted to keep. They were leaving that night, and they would never look back. Asa did as he was told, still in a sleepy stupor, and ended up packing all of his art supplies and a stuffed animal he had received when he was seven.
Emma had managed to sneak out over two thousand dollars from their “parents” over the last three and a half months, and had already bought two bus tickets to San Francisco. They would figure out what to do then.
Secret & Personality
Darkest Secret:
Now that he is older, Asa knows what his father did to the first girl and second girl his parents “adopted.” He knows that he was kidnapped, too; even so, he pretends and believes it isn’t true so strongly that the information is suppressed.
Positive Traits:  moral ★ gentle ★ curious ★ well mannered
Negative Traits: unadaptable ★ worrisome ★ forgetful ★incurably romantic
Further Information
Repressed biromantic.
Asa still uses his name, but Emma has changed hers back to Bonnie Clark. She deals with all the finances, so everything is in her name.
Asa doesn’t really remember his birth mother or his home in England, though he does have a very slight accent. Sometimes he dreams of his first home.
He paints whenever he can, usually with oils. He likes watercolours, too, but doesn’t use them as often.
He’s absolutely crazy for stars and constellations. His favourite constellation is the Corona Borealis.
Connections
None at the moment.
Played by Chou ★ EST ★ FC: Logan Lerman
