Chihayafuru Part 1 in Review

I have to say, I had a lot of expectations going into this movie. I’m a fan of the manga, I like Hirose Suzu, and I genuinely like to see how live action adaptations go. The question is: does Chihayafuru live up to my expectations? (Spoiler Free)

Riku: Brrr, it’s so cold! I hope we start with the morning training soon so I can warm up…!        (opens club room door) Good morning! …Eh, it’s just you. Takeru: Sakurai sent a message and said she went back for something she forgot. No word from the captain and the others, though. Riku: Well, the seniors either come in early or just in time, depending on the day. I’m more surprised that Kuga-senpai isn’t here yet. Takeru: Kuga-senpai also sent a message. He said he’ll be a little late because he’s going to help someone who’s lost get to their destination. Riku: Uwah, he’s already helping others this early in the morning? He’s remarkable, as usual. Hasn’t he reached the point where he can live on the gifts he received from the people he helped? Takeru: Uhh… Last time, he got an assortment of ham and sausages. Riku: And there was that time he received a sack of rice straight from the farm…        (stomach growls) …Should we start helping other people, too? Takeru: Helping others shouldn’t be for a reason. Riku: Yeah, you’re right. But when you think about it, our club’s made up of a bunch of weirdos. Takeru: …Weirdos? Riku: There’s our team captain, who’s half-British and handsome but doesn’t hesitate to hit someone. There’s Kohinata-senpai, who’s a pretty boy at first glance, but always makes silly jokes when he’s with Kadowaki-senpai. There’s the previously mentioned Kadowaki-senpai who lives and breathes shogi. There’s Kuga-senpai, the neighborhood’s own hero, enough to get recognition from the police. Finally, there’s you, Fujiwara-kun with the leg fetish and a one-track mind for Stride. Takeru: I don’t have a leg fetish. And the way you said that, it’s like you’re implying that only you and Sakurai aren’t weird. Riku: Eh? Well, Sakurai-san and I are perfectly normal! We’re very much normal, thank you! Takeru: That won’t do. Riku: Why? Takeru: An ordinary way of running won’t help us win in EOS. Right? Riku: Oh… Um, well…that’s right, I guess…? Takeru: It is, obviously. So Yagami. You, too, must become…a weirdo! Riku: I will become…a weirdo!        –Hell no! I got carried away there for a second, but there’s no way having an odd personality can vastly improve my speed! Takeru: I just meant, you must become faster until others think that you’re not normal. I’ll definitely reach that level! Riku: Why do you look so pumped up? You don’t have to be weirder than you are now…        (door opens) …Oh! Good morning, Sakurai-san! Listen to this, when I told Fujiwara that you and I are just normal– Takeru: Sakurai. Hi pretty! I wanted to ask you something about Akatsuki no Yona. Every month are published 2 chapters, right? But I have understood that every 2 months there is a pause and only one chapter is published throughout the month. As in February I think just there was a chapter, it does mean that in May there will also only one chapter throughout the month? I don't know if this is right 'cause I just started reading the manga and I have this curiosity. I love your blog! Thank you very much for answer!

Hi! The magazine Hana to Yume in which Yona runs is published twice a month, usually on the 5th and 20th. However, there’s no set date for when a series is on a break, because there are several reasons that could occur. The most common ones that I can think of are:

the mangaka needs time to do color work. This is the usual cause for a break. It can be for a magazine cover or title page, or simply to draw the cover of the next manga volume to be published.

the mangaka has to draw an extra chapter or oneshot for a sister magazine.

the mangaka is ill and cannot complete the chapter before the deadline. 

the mangaka is on holidays (sadly for their health it doesn’t happen often)

the editor doesn’t want 2 series with impactful chapters to collide and arranges to have them in separate issues to maximize sales. I don’t think it happens often because they will arrange the pacing beforehand so that 2 big hits don’t end at the same time.

From what we can observe with the chapters for years 2015 and 2016 so far, not including the extra chapters from The Hana:

99 color title page - 100 - break - break - 101 - 102 - 103 - break - 104 - 105 color cover - 106 - break - 107 - break - 108 color cover - 109 - 110 - 111 - break - 112 color cover - break - 113 - 114 - 115 - 116 - break - 117 color cover - 118 - 119 - break - 120.

I don’t remember when exactly she said she was working on the color illustrations / extra chapters so I can’t tell which break is for what, but you get the gist.

We might get another break early May between the issues for 122 and 123, as I expect one of these 2 chapters to get a color title page.
