“nope, just canadian.” carl shoots back trying to add some levity to the conversation. “i get taken to a facility where they train mutants, harvests our organs for our powers, or become a guinea pig for those giant robots that want to get us.” carl had been told quite a few things by other mutants after getting to know some of the groups in the city. “you’re right, i should probably start learning how to control my powers, someone told me they’d actually be very useful.”

“  hm  .  ”  she doesn’t really get that joke  ,  but she’ll let it slide  .  she’s heard a little here and there about mutants  ,  but she didn’t expect them to be so ordinary  .  maybe because she’s too used to asgard  ,  where people flaunt their abilities  (  though most don’t possess anything out of the ordinary  )  .  “  they’d really do all that  ?  good grief  ,  humans really haven’t gotten any better in the last thousand or so years  ,  have they  .  ”  it does sound like he’s catastrophising a little  ,  but she doesn’t know for sure  .  “  what powers do you have  ?  ”  she adds  ,  curiously  .

if there is one thing hela has noticed about new york, it is that this city is full of spirits  .  it makes sense  ,  she thinks  —  america was built on the back of violence  ,  and in a place full of people with so many different beliefs  ,  the number of souls with no afterlife to head to would naturally be higher  .  “  i didn’t hear it  ,  though that doesn’t always mean anything  ,  ”  hela says  .  “  being as you are  ,  you might be more in tune with any ghosts or lost souls around here  .  ”  she could look more carefully  ,  but  —  well  ,  no dead thing  ,  no matter how malicious  ,  would be stupid enough to try something with hela around  .

at the mention of officers of the law  ,  hela’s face scrunches in disgust  .  “  ew  ,  cops  ?  ”  she pauses to think  ,  though it’s more of an act  ,  having already made her mind up  .  “  i’m guessing that they wanted to arrest you  ,  rather than get an autograph  ?  ”  it’s a rhetorical question  —  the young person does not strike hela as the type to get on the good side of the new york police  .  “  you can stay until they leave  .  or  ,  if you’d prefer  ,  there’s half a dozen different weapons in the drawer to your left  ,  you could always give their chase a more permanent end  ...  don’t worry  ,  nobody would be able to pin it on you  .  ”

“yeah, i don’t really trust the people who’ve constantly treated my existence as more of an inconvenience and have never really been doing this without ulterior motives. i know i’m not the most well versed, but i do know to trust my instincts and it’s telling me to not put all my cards in them.” carl explained knowing that the past was more than enough proof for him to tread lightly in these unknown waters. these times were very different than the ones in his past, the world kept moving on but he didn’t know whether or not it was in the right direction.

“  you’re really pessimistic  ,  huh  ...  ”  hela mutters  .  “  what’s the worst that can happen  ,  anyway  ?  ”  maybe she doesn’t quite understand  .  she’s often been called naïve  ,  childish  ;  side effects of having to grow up too fast  ,  of being taught to excel at combat but nothing else  —  social interaction  ,  consequently  ,  is a weakness of hers  .  “  you’ve got to learn to stand up for yourself against those people  ,  then  .  you can’t just  ...  roll over whenever they tell you to  .  ”

“  it seems you came prepared  ,  ”  hela says  ,  raising an eyebrow at how quickly and easily wanda counters her arguments  .  “  unfortunately  ,  you’ve missed a key factor here  :  you are by far the most interesting  .  ”  she shrugs  .  “  it’s not every day i meet someone that odin would be more scared of than he was of me  .  ”

“thought that was what mostly went on in new york, just fighting and cheetah ring aliens,” anybody else would’ve been able to say chitauri but for some reason the old man in him could not get a grasp on the name. “it’s not about timidity, it’s more about me not really trusting how the state handles things or the government. usually they don’t take kindly to people like me,” he wasn’t sure which of the four he meant the most, a mutant, gay, latino, or canadian.

hela is all too familiar with prejudiced governments  ,  the catty remarks of odin’s advisors in relation to her parentage inked into her memory  .  suddenly  ,  she understands his trepidation  —  though she herself has no fear of persecution  ,  being capable of defeating even the entire valkyrie corps  ,  she knows that not everyone is so lucky  .  “  hm  ,  yes  ,  that would complicate matters  ,  ”  she says  .  “  i’m not familiar with any of the non-governmental organisations around here  ,  but surely there are some of those that can help  ?  ”

Seeing the other, Amora straightened up. A part of her was happy to see someone of her kind. However, Hela wouldn’t of been her first choice. Hela’s name carried weight and as daring as Amora was, she stayed in her lane. Hela was the god of death and she the goddess of love and lust. She had heard stories about Hela and her exploits so Hel was not a realm even Amora dared tried to mess with.

As Hela judged her for what she had done, Amora rolled her eyes. “Hela, darling, a pleasure.” She responded with her tone dripping in sarcasm. “You are an Asgardian as am I. You rule over death and I rule over love. It isn’t my fault he was willing to serve me and rightfully so. He is just a mortal.” Amora looked over to them, seeing the black dagger. “I’m not an enemy, Hela. If anything, I’ve admired your work.”

she smirks at amora’s sarcastic reply  ,  glad to know she’s successfully gotten on the other goddess’ nerves  .  “  infatuation is hardly comparable to love  ,  ”  hela retorts  ,  more than a little irked by amora’s insinuation that her methods of coercion are at all related to her dominion  .  “  regardless of your domain  ,  there is always a better way of getting what you want  .  ”  she rolls her eyes  .  “  besides  ,  all this fuss over a little argument  ?  pathetic  .  ”  hela is far more inclined to order some popcorn when faced with such conflicts  .  then again  ,  the other would probably profess to hate conflict because it is at odds with love  ,  or some equally absurd reasoning  .  if war and violence were truly so antithetical to love  ,  odin would never have found a woman willing to marry him  .  “  you admire my work  ?  hah  .  i find that unlikely  .  ”  she’s yet to meet anyone who admires her work  ,  she hardly thinks someone so put off by the sight of a single dagger would be impressed by the conquest of the nine realms  .
