[Daisy watches him through her cracked door, nothing but damp darkness behind it. Like a horror movie demon, she catches his wrist in one of his back and forths. She tugs at him, but isn't strong enough to actually drag her into her room. She is strong enough to make him stumble back.] Murtaza, [she whispers, dramatic.] I am dying. [She pauses.] Why aren't you.
“Daisifer,” Arash whispers back, stumbling over the door frame without the daeva’s grace to help him. He tucks a stringy length of hair behind her ear. “You look terrible.”
The room is far gloomier than normal: humid, air thick and marshy like a hospital ward. He frowns at her, squinting in the dark to find her face. He can look people in the eye, now; he fully intends to make use of it. “What does it feel like?”

Arash is checking the halls of Ra and Proteus for disoriented students: corralling grouchy semi-vampires to the kitchens for some real food; arranging a buddy for a sophomore who suddenly has to learn to walk instead to float.
When no one’s looking, though, he’s not just smiling -- he’s beaming, eyes the deep warm brown that he hasn’t seen in years. No burnt copper taste of an incoming migraine; just a flickering shine from under his fingernails, the world slipping in and out of focus like his proverbial glasses are askew. And you know what? He can live with that.

Quote
I’ve noticed something about people who make a difference in the world: They hold the unshakable conviction that individuals are extremely important, that every life matters. They get excited over one smile. They are willing to feed one stomach, educate one mind, and treat one wound. They aren’t determined to revolutionize the world all at once; they’re satisfied with small changes. Over time, though, the small changes add up. Sometimes they even transform cities and nations, and yes, the world.

Amy Winehouse performing the definitive version of “Back to Black” in front of a small audience of 85 in an Irish church on a cold December evening in 2006. Everything she performed before this was preparation; everything after reflection.
“Truth is I’m a fucking romantic. I’m difficult but I promise I’m not boring!” - Amy Winehouse
