Fresh out of college I got a job at a country club with chairs kind of like this poorly drawn one from my memory. My brain called them captain’s chairs—for what reason I can’t tell you. No captains around for miles. They had these wings on them with rungs on the legs that made them difficult to stack. And they were all wooden so they were really heavy. Clearing out the bar with 50 of these chairs gave me my lesbianic shine I continue to hone today. These chairs are ugly. Everyone hated them. They tripped waitresses, busboys, and patrons alike. My terrible drawing of this chair may look unhinged—but it perfectly captures this kind of chair’s existence. If I have to exist and be this ugly, useless, and heavy–then everyone will know about it. 

Rewinding the clock about 20 years back to when I was a 7 year old, I got into a fight with my mom. I received a Game Boy for Christmas in 1992–one that came with the game Q*bert. “What’s your favorite game?” she asked me. “Qwerbert,” I replied, haughtily. It’s right there on the package.

After she got over her laughter, she asked me to repeat what I said. When I did, she corrected me. “The game is called Q*bert, like Q-Tips,” she tried, helpfully. I picked up the game box and showed her, as if it were plain as day and she were the one being ridiculous. “Qwerbert, right here see? It says Qwerbert on the box mom. His name is Qwerbert.” Indeed. So I combine my 7-year-old confidence in being wrong with my hatred of those fucking captain’s chairs at the country club. These drawings may not be great, perfect, or anything worth posting to the internet—but I made them up like Qwerbert and I’m damn proud of them.
