The Fayette County Record was established in 1922. Other papers had existed at the time, but mostly served specific towns.  L. J. Sulak and Frank S. Baumbach saw a need for a county-wide paper, and so created the Fayette County Record.
On Nov. 3, 1922, they released their first issue.
In 1968, The La Grange Journal was purchased amicably amongst friends, and so The Fayette County Record absorbed The La Grange Journal, making the Record the only paper in La Grange.
Today, almost 100 years later, they employ 20 locals who are experienced, committed, and confident in their ability to provide the facts to the residents of Fayette County.
We urge you to trust in your local media to keep informed at this time. You can expect a paper every Tuesday and Friday.
They are a safe, accredited source for information and will be working around the clock to keep you updated on the current situation in Fayette County. You can keep up to date on their website, and on social media.

It’s Foodie Friday again!
This week we’re highlighting a La Grange staple… Lukas Bakery(tag)!
During World War II, Raymond Lukas joined the army to serve his country. After he was honorably discharged Lukas continued to serve by baking for those at Camp Swift in Bastrop.
Around this time,  Lucille Kurio was attending a local wedding when she ate a cake so heavenly she proclaimed she NEEDED to marry the man who’d made it.
Remember Raymond? He happened to be the baker of said cake, and by happenstance he’d been standing behind Lucille when she’d made her proclamation. He became enamored with her and 4 short months later, they were engaged.
In 1947, the two opened Lukas Bakery, and it’s been family owned and operated since, baking everything from scratch, just like Raymond once did.
Today, they serve everything from loaves of bread and homemade noodles, to cookies, kolaches, and “the best pigs in Texas”.
Stop in, and check out their AMAZING pastry selection before browsing the rest of La Grange’s Downtown Square!
Just a word to the wise… Lukas Bakery only accepts cash and is open from 5:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m Monday through Saturday.

ALL ABOARD!
If you’re in La Grange this weekend, be sure to stop by the M-K-T Depot!
The Depot was completed in November 1897 by the M-K-T Railroad (specifically: the Taylor, Bastrop, and Houston Railroad). It replaced the earlier depot that was on this site from 1887 until it burned in March 1897.
It’s sure to be fun for the whole family as the depot now houses the La Grange Depot Museum, which has a lot of cool information about train history in the area! It is open to the public every Saturday (except some holidays) from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Thursday March 12th
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…
Former President Theodore Roosevelt (pictured with the X over his head) spoke a few words to a large gathering of La Grange citizens at the current M-K-T Depot.
At the time, Roosevelt had friends in the area who were privy to the fact he’d be passing through.
Together, the town got to work and sent a telegraph to Judge Walther Burns saying, “The city council of La Grange has passed an ordinance strictly prohibiting any ex-president from passing through this city without making at least a five minute stop. You will please so instruct the Roosevelt committee and warn them against a violation of this ordinance.” Burns immediately passed the telegram to Roosevelt who responded, “By all means, let the train stop at La Grange. We are in a hurry, but are not taking such chances as to violate city ordinances.”
109 years ago today, March 12th of 1911, Roosevelt arrived, shook hands with the friends he knew, and then commenced his 5 minute speech. He was well received by the people of La Grange.
It’s unknown what all was said verbatim, however the clipping of the La Grange Journal from the week of the event stated that Roosevelt had lots of good praise for both Texans, and Texas.
Afterwards the crowd stayed behind to watch him depart and the train disappear.

It’s amazing what you can create while quilting! The artists at The Quilt Museum create truly stunning designs.
Over 60,000 people from every state, and 58 different countries have visited the Museum in its lifetime (almost 10 years!).
This week the Quilt Museum will be presenting a new exhibit, and they change it out every 3 months so you’ll always see something new.
We encourage you to swing by, if you’ve never been or if you have before, you won’t be disappointed with their displays! Afterwards stop by their period garden which is adjacent to the Museum it shows what would be typical of “city gardens” in Fayette County and Central Texas around the time of our buildings, about 1890, through the 1930s, and is one of only a few.

Now through July, the Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives presents “When White Dresses Were in Vogue”.
The exhibit features many lovely examples of women’s clothing, and represents the period between about 1905 and 1915 when white was the color of choice for stylish ladies.
It’s unclear whether local women were just being fashionable or were making a political statement like the suffragettes, but there was definitely a trend toward wearing white, as we have photographs from that period showing us how white clothing dominated fashion before World War I.
The Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives is located on the second floor of the Fayette Public Library at 855 S Jefferson St.

In 2007, John asked his wife, Rhonda to bring him home a little something from their church’s annual fundraiser. She spent $1.00, and brought home a book titled “Coffee, a guide to buying, brewing and enjoying”, by Ken Davids.
Through this book, they saw how easy it was to source good quality green coffee beans, and roast them.
In 2009, they turned their hobby into a business and leased a building on the Square in downtown La Grange. By 2016, they had opened a full scale Coffee Shop and changed their name to Big State Coffee House and Roastery.
Today, Big House State Coffee and Roastery is more than just coffee! They offer scrumptious handmade pastries, quiches, soups, salads, and sandwiches, along with juices, smoothies, and of course, their renowned coffee.
Rhonda and John are grateful for their growth, and the lifelong friends they’ve accrued on their journey. They strive to use organic ingredients and offer healthy/ vegetarian options to the community.
Feel free to stop in for coffee, and stay for the awesome food, and hospitality!

The Postcard shows the burning remains of the La Grange Cotton Compress, which was destroyed by a fire on February 27, 1906. According to the photo it was a “$200,000 Fire”. The Postcard shows the railroad tracks in the foreground with the smoldering ruins in the background.
The La Grange Cotton Compress was established in 1893.
According to this newspaper clipping from The La Grange Journal on March 1st of 1906, a spark from one of the Katy engines ignited a bale of cotton, and a strong north wind fanned the flames. The fire spread to the roof of the nearby Alamo Lumber yard sheds, and in a few moments the lumber yard was engulfed in the fire as well. The fire would then destroy a large amount of cotton, damage equipment, and burn a large amount of property owned by the Alamo Lumber Company before it was contained. It was said to be a miracle no one was harmed as the blaze was the largest the community had faced at the time.  The business survived the fire and continued well into the last century. In later years, the business would also be known as the La Grange and Lockhart Compress Company.

The Cotton Gin started with Donna’s passion for shopping. She loved shopping with her family and friends at Galleries, Antique stores, and Retail stores in general.
Donna knew early on she wanted her own store, but she wanted it to be unique… that’s when she came up with the idea to mix her favorite kinds of places together and create The Cotton Gin!
Her dream came to life in November of 2017 when she opened the doors to the La Grange Cotton Gin with her daughter Ginger (pictured on the left).
Stop in The La Grange Cotton Gin today to find a unique piece of art by a local, Fayette County, artist like Rebecca Woods (pictured on the right), a cute outfit for a night out, a beautiful antique for your home, or just to chat with Donna and Ginger.
They look forward to seeing you!
