Poster project
After creating our characters, next up was sketching thumbnails for this project. I went for an action/sci-fi graphic novel style in the end, but experimented with many different ideas. Here are the initial 12.

Then we narrowed these down to three main ideas, each telling a different story and with a different scenario. These were critiqued by the class. One shows Oswin in combat with a giant serpent, another ready for battle, and one more of him gazing up at the stars in wonder.

After some feedback I combined the use of perspective with the pose of Oswin with the gun. Here are all my WIP screenshots.

Very proud of the result. Could have improved the perspective as I feel the torso is too long. This course was a ton of fun, and I enjoyed creating all of these fun characters and seeing what my classmates had cooked up. I even made some new friends in the course, so I really can't go wrong. I enjoyed exploring a new range of techniques, and my understanding of how to use a reference image successfully has improved. My favorite "side quest" was the 10 minute figure drawings, though I found it a repetitive task at the time, it was still enjoyable and very helpful. I wanted to try out a lineless style with Nicholas Kole's rendering style, so if I were to do anything different, it would be that. I really wanted to make something with dynamic and bold lighting, something that really pops. The cold colors contrasted with the saturated red achieved this, though I still believe the planet could be brighter still, it blends into the background because the values aren't as varied. I think if the planet were bright, it would bring even more attention to Oswin's face.

Oswin: Visual aspects
Due to a saving error I lost the 6 silhouettes I experimented with. This is the earliest version of the file I have saved out as a PNG.

The contrast was very low initially. Experimenting with color:

After some advice from the teacher, I lightened the background.

Then added more contrast. I played with the colors a little more.

I'm now very happy with his design. I think there could still be more contrast, which I plan on utilizing in the poster project.

Oswin
An alien aboard spacecraft 07 (of 10) with a crew of 30, captain of the jet squad. Skilled pilot, combatant and inventor. Would rather fight than flee, unlike most of his kind. Comes off as a loose cannon and a troublemaker, as he stands up to his superiors. His crew disagrees with his methods but can’t argue with the results when he blasts enemies. He hates aliens. He left his family on his home planet and misses them greatly. Currently travelling through space, aiding in the journey to find a new home for his species, threatened by predators becoming overpopulated.

Questionnaire:
1 How old is your character?
20 years
2 What's their relationship with their parents? (if their parents are dead then detail the story and their past relationship if you can find it) (if they have a different back story again, then enter that here)
Mixed, due to Oswin’s nature in being less peaceful than most of his kind. His chaotic nature can upset them, but they do their best to take care of him.
3 Who raised them (ignore if listed in 2)
Answer
4 Do they have any siblings? - If so, describe them and their relationship(s)
His sister, who loved watching him build and helped test his inventions. They spent a lot of time together, and often keep in touch with one another while Oswin is out on missions.
5 What is the main thing, or some things that challenge them?
His task to save his species and being ostracized from his own kind due to moral differences. He finds it hard to get along with his own kind since so few agree with him, and he hates watching his own kind lose numbers because they refuse to fight back.
6 Describe two or more relationships with other characters – what characterizes those relationships?
His crewmates often see him as a loose cannon. He only has a couple on his team that will even talk to him. His closest friend and crewmate is the only one willing to hear his plans or learn about his inventions, and since he doesn’t have many people interested in his work, he’ll take what he can get. He often reminds his crewmate how much he appreciates having someone on his side.
7 Does your character have children – if so, how does your character relate to them?
No
8 Does your character have a mentor?
No
9 How has your character’s upbringing shaped their view of the world?
Due to growing up during the uprising of the predator species on his planet, he witnessed a lot of pain. Seeing how his species is pacifistic, he takes matters into his own hands by being one of few to use weapons to fight back.
10 Does your character have chosen accessories / clothing / tools / weapons?
He wears a baggy one-piece uniform with his pilot number on it, matching the number on his jet, 07. He builds his own weapons and inventions. He’ll often be seen holding a toolbox, or some kind of wrench/spanner/etc.
11 Does your character have any notable enemies?
The predator species on his home planet. During his crew’s travels through space, they encounter a lot of aggressive space aliens, such as pirates. He even has enemies within his own crew.
12 Describe your character’s world.
His home planet is mostly aquatic, and his species has both freshwater and saltwater variants. They tend to stay in water due to their higher speed and agility when swimming. The planet was teeming with life, with hundreds of alien species. Trade was frequent amongst the many species, often occurring at beach markets, or shoreline/semi-underwater trade centers. Wars weren’t common due to the peaceful nature of most species, until Oswin’s predator species grew out of control and began eating everything in sight.
13 What are your character’s goals in life?
Other than finding a new home for his species, he wants to convince his crew to accept the use of weapons, so the pilots can all defend themselves from enemies. At the very least, he wants to teach them good strategies for deterring enemies without directly harming them. He wants to stand up to the crew’s leaders, who often abuse their power.
14 What stops your character getting towards their goals?
His crew’s attitude towards him, obstacles like pirates and other enemy aliens, and the crew’s leaders not letting him do anything.
15 What personality flaws does your character have and how do they manage them?
Anxiety and self-doubt, which he sweeps under the rug by burying himself in his inventions or keeping to the hangar or his cabin, mostly avoiding social contact. He also automatically hates any species he encounters in space, and he assumes that they’re a threat, due to past experiences. He’ll always assume the worst of any aliens he runs into.
16 What special talents does your character have – were they innate or did they develop them, or discover them – if the latter, then how did this happen over time?
Skilled Pilot, it came natural to him during training. He learned to be stealthy and swim fast to escape predators. He always loved inventing things and has a knack for making weapons. This is because building weapons has been a priority for him.
17 Is your character a loner or gregarious – or something more complicated (if so, describe)
He is a loner, though not by choice. Due to his unpopular beliefs, he is an outcast.

Three Characters and Arcs homework
Note: Was unaware that we needed to do three until the last day we had left to do it. Thus, Oswin has the most work put into him. 1. Oswin, 20 SETTING Spacecraft 07 (of 10) with a crew of 30. He is a scout and jet pilot, of which he has modified to have weapons, used to blast obstacles, and sometimes enemies. His home planet is mostly water. Far smaller than earth, and only has a handful of species, however each species has a lot of variety. The planet was full of huge underwater cities, densely populated by all kinds of wacky creatures, until the predator species grew out of control and began consuming everything in sight. Being the peaceful conflict-avoiding species they are, Oswin and 9 other crews were hastily sent off to find a new home.
GOAL Sent from home planet to find a new home for his species. He wants his crew to understand his point of view, as most of his species are peaceful, pacifist individuals, and refuse to use weapons or cause harm. He wants to teach himself and his fellow lower-ranked crew to stand up for themselves due to the unhealthy power dynamics amongst the crew.
CHALLENGE (EXTERNAL)Space is ginormous, and finding a new home is a huge pressure on the crew as a whole.  The predator species have grown to overpopulation and have become more aggressive than ever. There’s also the threat of encountering less-than-friendly alien neighbours while in space. He needs to be ready to fight, especially since none of the other jet pilots have interest in using weapons. Disagreements between him and other crew mates causes him to be an outcast among his own crew. They need to learn to work together, or at least respect each other’s opinions. He experiences ostracism from his own crew due to his different morals and beliefs. The crew environment is toxic. No one really wants to be there, but they have a job to do.
CHALLENGE (INTERNAL)He puts on an act to distract himself from pressure and self-doubt. He doesn’t think too much of himself and due to being the only one on his crew that deliberately causes harm, he thinks himself a bad person. He also has to deal with being the only one who’s defending his crew from danger, one of only 10 spacecrafts sent out to find a new home. He feels like it’s all on his shoulders to save his species. He loses himself in his work, creating inventions, mainly weapons. He feels survivors guilt for being sent away and leaving his family and so many others behind on his home planet, thinking he may have been one of the few willing to fight back against the predators. He has a constant fear about what could be going on back home every day. He can be trigger-happy at times, often causing discomfort to his crew. He wants his crew to work together to push back against enemy threats. He’s terrified of death. Not just his own (His species has a short lifespan), but the anxiety of losing his family, maybe even his entire species? It’s a lot of weight on his (and his crew’s) shoulders. He’s homesick, missing family after being forced to leave, barely given a chance to say goodbye. He struggles to avoid feeling distrustful toward any and all other species due to witnessing the predator species attacking his home. He’s not a good communicator. He’s surrounded by others but feels alone due to his differences.
TALENT He’s a skilled pilot with a knack for stealth and combat. Talented inventor and engineer. Fast swimmer, his speed motivated by the predator threat.
SCENARIO FOR CHARACTER ARC1. Alien AttackThe ship is under attack by an aggressive giant serpentine alien. The crew is panicking! Oswin makes the decision to sneak down to the hangar and take off with his modified jet, almost being stopped by some crew members. He battles with the giant serpent, an intense 1v1 that almost destroys Oswin’s jet in the process. The wounded giant alien eventually turns tail. While the crew disagree with his methods, they can’t argue with the results. They come to an agreement to let Oswin modify all the jets, on the condition that their tech is used purely for defence rather than attack, E.G. shields around their spacecrafts or a blast that will launch an enemy far away, discouraging them from reapproaching. Oswin’s confidence in himself increases, and his hope that the crew will learn to get along becomes more of a reality. Oswin believes now more than ever that he and his crew are more than capable to be the ones to save their species. He even makes some buddies on the crew. He is soon promoted to captain of the Jet squad, teaching the pilots how to use the new tech.
2. Alien… Allies?
The crew runs into another spacecraft, owned by another alien race. Due to previous encounters, the crew, especially Oswin, are cautious. This new crew is very kind, but this makes Oswin very suspicious. His distrust for all alien species has made him on edge. Through getting to know the other crew, he starts to learn that there are friends in space. They actually suggest some empty planets to Oswin’s crew that might be of help. They bid farewell and continue their voyage. Oswin learns to give others a chance rather than jumping to judgement. 2. Jackpot, unclear age SETTING A quiet, less-than-popular arcade in Las Vegas, where there’s rumours of a slot machine that can make your dreams come true. However, those who are too greedy seem to disappear. This is because Jackpot resides within the machine, and he believes anyone can be a winner. However, as a demon, his job is to punish those who are too sinful. Thus, those who are greedy are, well, eaten. Let’s just say, in a place like Las Vegas, Jack never goes hungry, even though most avoid the mysterious arcade.
GOAL To survive, and punish sinners. To escape his fate.
CHALLENGE (EXTERNAL)While his soul is confined to the slot machine, he yearns for freedom. He has no idea what’s going on in the outside world, having been trapped in the arcade for so long.
CHALLENGE (INTERNAL)He’s very bored of the arcade, but since he can’t leave, he’s frustrated. He’s always been selfish, and his greed from before he was turned into a demon led to his downfall. He also doesn’t truly take joy in punishing humans, and would much prefer to go back to his own human life. He holds a lot of regrets, and now that everyone he knew before he died is gone, he has no way to make up for the wrongs he did.
TALENT His many years of life has given him wisdom, though he doesn’t often get a chance to put it to use. Being a demon grants him abilities such as shape-shifting and a teensy bit of reality warping. He’s also a good dealmaker, being a conniving trickster.  SCENARIO FOR CHARACTER ARC One day, he makes a deal with a human called Avaritia. He’ll give Ava whatever amount of money she needs in exchange for releasing his soul from the arcade and being his guide to the modern day.  Ava frees his soul from the arcade, and he is able to become human once more, albeit still technically a demon. He learns that Ava does not want the money for herself, but rather to pay for medical bills as their loved one is dying. This inspires him to do some good in the world, and comes to terms with his past mistakes. He and Ava become friends. 3. Leo Snow, 15 SETTING An alternate earth where animals are in the place of humans. Similar if not identical to “Zootopia” or “Beastars” in concept. Predators and Prey are two distinct classes. Any species that once ate another species is considered a predator, regardless of whether they were also prey themselves. Nowadays, predators eat alternative plant-based meats. Eggs and some fish types are also legal food. Eating another animal citizen is, in fact, illegal. However, the divide is still strong due to years of conflict between species.
GOAL To become a respected music legend, adored by all! He also wants predator and prey species to get along, so music can be enjoyed by everyone all in one space.
CHALLENGE (EXTERNAL)Treated like a child and babied for being cute and fluffy by other predator species. Never taken seriously. Prey species generally avoid him, and his Screamo performances and clothing preferences often scare away prey species.
CHALLENGE (INTERNAL) He doesn’t like scaring people, but he also doesn’t like being treated like a harmless baby. He wants others to see him as a trustworthy friend that they can look up to. He doesn’t always think about his band, sometimes getting lost in daydreams where he only sees himself getting praised by others for his success. He can come off as a narcissist to some.
TALENT Good screamo singer. He can put a lot of emotion into his words, and writes songs to express himself, his emotions, and how he sees the world.
SCENARIO FOR CHARACTER ARC He sets up a concert where all species are welcome. He and the band come up with a soundtrack to wow the audience, maybe win their hearts and change their perspective. He’s discouraged by his family and other predators mocking him and calling it a pipe dream, that the two main classes will never unite as one, but he’s a stubborn lad. Prey species are afraid to attend the concert, due to the amount of predators that will likely be there. After talking with Leo, the band made some changes to the concert, making it outdoors and during the day, though it wasn’t ideal to Leo, who wanted a nighttime indoor concert with flashing lights. However, the compromise garners the concert more interest. The concert finally happens, and while the audience is tense at first, they soon get into the groove. By the end of the concert, there has definitely been improvement between the relationships, and Leo feels hopeful about the future. He comes to understand that his band are his closest allies in helping him achieve his dream. Without them he’d be totally lost. He believes that he and his band can change the world.

Amethyst Questionnaire PT.3
12. Describe your character’s world
Answer
Beach City is the primary location in the Steven Universe franchise. It is situated in
Beach County[1] in the fictional state of Delmarva, in the 443 area code, on the East
Coast of the United States. The Crystal Gems have resided in Beach City before Bill
Dewey's great-great-great-great-grandfather, Captain William Dewey, founded Beach City nearly 200 years ago. After many months out at sea, the Crystal Gems, as messengers of Rose Quartz, came across William Dewey's ship and warned the captain and crew to turn back, as the land that would soon be known as Beach City was dangerous and not safe for humans. William Dewey, after an incident with the mast of his ship, drifted across the sea until he and his crew encountered a massive storm and a giant Gem Monster. The ship was saved from being sunk after a Crystal Gem fusion (Obsidian)[2] saved William Dewey and the ship. She brought Dewey and the ship to shore and told the captain not to reside on the land. William Dewey chose to stay on the land, and the Fusion accepted William's decision and informed him that she would most likely interfere again.[3] The Crystal Gems continue to reside in Beach City where they watch over and protect its inhabitants from danger and evil.
13. What are your character’s goals in life?
Protect and defend the Earth from threats. Defeat Jasper (formerly). 14. What stops your character getting towards their goals?
She struggles to accept the burden of responsibility and overcoming her poor self-image arising from her smaller stature and "defective" creation, and takes her anger out by picking fights. She is rebellious and stubborn and does not listen to others easily. 15. What personality flaws does your character have and how do they manage them?
Carefree to a fault
Pearl and Steven help her become more aware of her responsibilities/ she matures throughout the show.
Amethyst is easily amused and very impulsive. She is bad-mannered, untidy, and a bit lazy; much to Pearl's detriment, but still means well. Her unwillingness to let others throw out the junk in her room marks her as somewhat of a hoarder. These tendencies surface in "Maximum Capacity", where she is unwilling to let Greg throw anything away in his storage unit. This is not managed?
Amethyst has an admittedly low opinion of herself and a strong self-loathing that she usually keeps buried under her boisterousness. When her self-doubt takes effect, it makes her act cold, reckless, stubborn, and starts looking for a fight. She meets Amethysts that are from Earth and that they remember her as 8XM, befriending her and making pranks at her side. In "Tiger Philanthropist", she is now comfortable with her self-esteem and no longer needs wrestling as an output of dominance and power.
Obsession with finding and beating Jasper which leads her to recklessly challenge her alone, all the while denying her friends' help and encouragement. "Earthlings" shows Amethyst come to terms with herself due to Steven's encouragement, comfort, and stating that they are the same, leading them to fuse into Smoky Quartz. 16. What special talents does your character have – were they innate or did they develop them, or discover them – if the latter, then how did this happen over time?
Amethyst’s powers develop stronger as she becomes more confident. Her lack of confidence inhibits powers in gems.
Developed:
Flail/Whip Proficiency: Amethyst is very skilled with her whip, which mixes very well with her immense physical prowess. She can throw her whip to entangle or bind her target from afar.
Martial Arts: Amethyst is the Crystal Gem least likely to rely on her weapon in combat, relying instead on her martial arts skills and enhanced physical powers to deal with minor threats. She also is a skilled wrestler
Natural Abilities:
Enhanced Regeneration:
Amethyst can normally regenerate very quickly and with great variation, but this has been shown to backfire, as regenerating so quickly can make her new body extremely unstable. Strength:
Amethyst, being a Quartz soldier, has amazing physical strength, she is capable of jumping immense heights and can easily lift giant objects using her whip. In "Crack the Whip", she was able to poof Biggs Jasper by twisting her with her whip and strength. In "Steven vs. Amethyst", Amethyst destroyed a large portion of the ground as she pulled Steven.
Enhanced Durability:
Amethyst has also a great durability, in "Laser Light Cannon", Amethyst readily volunteered to get thrown at the Red Eye by Garnet in order to punch or body slam into it as an attempt to destroy it, persevering long after it was already proved to be a futile act. In "Crack the Whip", she was able to withstand a beating from Jasper, poofing only when Jasper attacked with her helmet.
Shapeshifting:
While most Gems are capable of shapeshifting, Amethyst is particularly skilled at it, specializing in transformations. She may use this skill to enhance her unarmed fighting or take on more bizarre forms depending on the task at hand. Some of her forms include several random to lethal animals, a fully-functional helicopter to transport others, her wrestling alter-ego, the Purple Puma, etc. However, Amethyst cannot shapeshift when she is under a lot of pressure, as revealed in "Secret Team".[2] There is also a limit on the amount of time she can stay shifted before having to revert.
Photokinesis:
Amethyst is shown using her gemstone to project a purple light, like a flashlight.
Bubbling:
Amethyst is able to bubble objects. Her bubbles are purple and are sent to the Burning Room inside the Temple. After Peridot poofs Jasper Amethyst bubbles her gemstone.
Unique Abilities:
Spin Dash: Amethyst can rapidly roll into a ball-like shape to attack enemies. While powerful, it is smaller than Jasper’s version,
Homing Attack: Amethyst can home in on nearby enemies while spin dashing
Whiplash Spin Dash: Amethyst can summon both of her whips, ignite them with violet fiery energy and then spin dash on top of them, giving a violet aura to her spin dash. When she makes contact with something, it causes a big violet explosion.
Hair-Blade: Amethyst can use her hair to slash at an enemy with such potency it severs others. This includes the claw of Bixbite.
Enhanced Digestion: Amethyst can eat materials (including glass, plastic, paper, etc.) and can digest it without getting sick or disgusted. However, she was food poisoned by a burrito in "So Many Birthdays".
○   Fire burp: Amethyst can burp fire after drinking cooking oil, as revealed in ○      the episode "Gem Harvest".
Clandestine Abilities:
Levitation: While controlled by White Diamond, Amethyst has the ability to indirectly suspend her body in midair.
White Burst: While controlled by White Diamond, Amethyst is capable of shooting a white energy beam from her eyes equivalent to White Diamond's aura, in which it can also mind control the affected gems. 17. Is your character a loner or gregarious – or something more complicated (if so, describe)
Amethyst has many friends, however she feels secretly inferior to them due to her being a “defective” gem. She has a hard time letting people in and ends up taking her anger out on them. However, as she befriends others and grows she feels more secure in her friendships and personality, becoming less impulsive and explosive and becoming confident in her identity.
Your additional questions 18. What are Amethyst's favorite things?
She likes to eat crazy concoctions of ingredients, including things that might not actually be edible, and play video games. 19. Why does Amethyst feel inferior?
A large part of Amethyst is how guilty and inadequate she feels for things that she has no control over, and no one helped her for years. Her problems originate with being a gem that isn’t properly formed and being a byproduct of the homeworld invasion. Another factor is Pearl and Garnet don’t always act the most supportive, often driving her to act out.
She knew she was part of the pain on earth and struggled to understand her place, making her deeply insecure and confused. After meeting Peridot and Jasper she becomes more confused knowing she is a malformed Gem. She does enjoy Peridot's company a lot though and helps her be able to adjust to life on earth, they still run into some problems with communication and world view but end up being good together. Jasper is someone Amethyst wants to beat to prove she is good enough but also wants to consider family even calling her Sis.
20. Who are people that make Amethyst feel inferior?
Sardonyx
Amethyst seems to show jealousy towards Sardonyx as she made Amethyst feel weak and reckless after Sugilite went berserk in "Coach Steven". This is most likely because of her wanting to be stronger and be noticed by Garnet
Jasper
Jasper and Amethyst are both Quartz soldiers made on Earth, but Jasper sees
Amethyst as nothing more than a joke and a failure for being 'overcooked'. Jasper told Steven (whom she mistook for Rose) that she must have been desperate to enlist the help of a "runt" like Amethyst. At the end of the events of "Crack the Whip", Amethyst feels inadequate because Stevonnie took down Jasper without her help, making Jasper's words feel true.

Amethyst Questionnaire PT.2
11. Does your character have any notable enemies?
Electric Skulls
The Electric Skulls are giant skulls with green Gems in the place of their eyes, and on the center of their forehead. They also have three long tufts of burgundy hair coming from the tops of their heads with spiked collars.
According to Pearl, they had been invading the Crystal Palace. After fighting with the Crystal Gems, they were defeated and destroyed
Eyeball
In "Back to the Moon", Amethyst shapeshifts into Jasper to fool the Rubies again, and "Eyeball", admiring Jasper, falls for the trick easily. Amethyst, both acting like she believes Jasper would and being her usual joker self, makes the Rubies comfortable in her presence. They sympathize with her story of keeping the Crystal Gems prisoner, crying and clapping because of her apparent devotion. They also joke alongside with her when she pokes fun at Pearl for being talkative, kicks some earth rocks to demonstrate her animosity towards the planet or gives the Crystal Gems the silly nickname, "Crystal Germs". "Eyeball" herself is elated when Amethyst-Jasper shows her kindness by saying that she is trusted and is not put off by Amethyst's playful personality, though occasionally appearing surprised. When Amethyst exposes herself, "Eyeball" becomes angry, as she has been tricked and Amethyst is revealed to be a Crystal Gem.
Spinel
Spinel is the main antagonist of Steven Universe: The Movie and a supporting character in Steven Universe Future. She was created at least 6,000 years prior to the events of the movie to comfort the lonely Pink Diamond, who had lost her first Pearl to White Diamond. The two would play in Pink's garden until she was finally given a colony. At this point, Pink outgrew Spinel and abandoned her under the guise of playing a game by having Spinel stand alone for thousands of years while Pink never returned. After discovering this through Steven's message to the universe, she went to Earth and attempted to destroy all organic life forms on the planet as an act of revenge. After making amends with Steven and the Crystal Gems, the Diamonds take her back to live with them on Homeworld. Now reformed and free, she is still living with the Diamonds, living a less destructive and aggressive life.
Yellow Diamond
Yellow Diamond, or Yellow for short, is a Homeworld Gem and a member of the Great Diamond Authority that formerly ruled over the Gem race. In particular, she commanded her now-disbanded military and oversaw Gem production on her colonies. She was first shown in the extended theme song before making her official debut in "Message Received".As a result of Era 3, Yellow now works to repair Gems she had previously shattered in her Cluster experiments and wishes to use her powers to help other Gems alter their physical form if they choose to do so.
White Diamond
White Diamond is the main antagonist of Steven Universe. She is supreme matriarch of the Homeworld Gem, the leader and founder of the Great Diamond Authority, outranking even Yellow Diamond, Blue Diamond and, prior to Era 2, Pink Diamond. Her mural was first introduced in the second season in the episode "It Could've Been Great", and reappeared in "Back to the Moon". Her first official appearance was in the Season 5 episode "Legs From Here to Homeworld".
Jasper
Jasper is a Homeworld Gem and former antagonist who was first indirectly mentioned in
"The Message" and made her official debut in "The Return". Originally sent to Earth to aid Peridot on her mission, she became corrupted after fusing with one of the Corrupted Gems that she had held captive in "Earthlings". She was healed alongside the rest of the Corrupted Gems in "Change Your Mind" and for a time lived on her own in the wooded outskirts of Beach City. She was accidentally shattered by Steven during "Fragments" and was subsequently restored by him. She now resides in Little Homeworld, beginning to learn a new way of life.

Amethyst Questionnaire PT.1
How old is your character?
~5,000 years 2. What's their relationship with their parents? (if their parents are dead then detail the story and their past relationship if you can find it) (if they have a different back story again, then enter that here)
She was created on Earth to be a soldier in the Gem Empire’s army but emerged after the kindergarten (people factory) was abandoned. She was then found by Rose Quartz and the Crystal Gems after living within the planet’s cave systems for roughly 500 years which stunted her growth. 3. Who raised them (ignore if listed in 2)
The Crystal Gems, specifically Rose Quartz as a main mentor figure.
4. Do they have any siblings? - If so, describe them and their relationship(s)
Not really siblings, but the Crystal Gems appear to be like an adopted family for Amethyst, treating the other two like siblings. Garnet is stern and ridged which can clash with Amethyst’s chaotic and hedonistic nature, Amethyst also feels insecure (character arc) in comparison to Garnet’s physical power of which she is jealous of. However, she does seem to have respect of Garnet’s authority and person(s). Pearl is the other third of the Crystal Gems, is structured and clean, which clashes with Amethyst’s impulsive and often mess behavior, but the two are still friends on a deep level, which further develops outwardly as the show progresses and as Amethyst develops self-confidence. 5. What is the main thing, or some things that challenge them?
The main thing that challenges Amethyst is her creation and being. She feels as if her very existence is a mistake and feels weak and inadequate when compared to her fellow Crystal Gems. She was made in a kindergarten (what is essentially a people factory for the purpose of creating armies) but came out “wrong” as she spent ~500 years underground. Her insecurities show up in her personality, hedonism and chaos can represent a lack of care for someone’s being, and she can be hostile to others at times, pushing them away. Over the course of the show, she develops out of this insecurity accepting herself for who she is and rejecting the shame she places on herself. 6. Describe two or more relationships with other characters – what characterizes those relationships?
Greg Universe – Father of Steven Universe: The main element that characterizes the relationship between Greg and Amethyst is grief as they were good friends before they lost Rose. Afterwards Amethyst expressed her grief through anger towards Greg, but through interaction the anger was lost and the two became friends again.
Steven Universe – Main Character: Amethyst can relate to steven as their personalities overlap in multiple ways, both being quite hedonistic and carefree, and both feeling a level of insecurity concerning their abilities as Crystal Gems. As such Amethyst holds Steven in high regard and Steven helps Amethyst with her self-loathing. 7. Does your character have children – if so, how does your character relate to them?
No. 8. Does your character have a mentor?
Yes, Rose Quartz probably. 9. How has your character’s upbringing shaped their view of the world?
She sees Earth as her world, the one she was born into. She engages and enjoys human activates because of both her hedonistic and carefree nature and being brought up around people. 10. Does your character have chosen accessories / clothing / tools / weapons
Amethyst is able to summon a whip which she uses as a weapon. She can be seen in some variation of black tank top and either sorts/trousers. She is purple.

Eye value study. Work in progress. Definitely wanna fix up the eyebrow. Might add the eyelashes at some point.

1. Initial animation style design with first colour palette.
2. Same design after critique.
3. Entire team’s designs.
I don’t do team projects often at all. It was really fun to do! The critique was definitely an important stage and I feel the character is more appealing now.

Nicholas Kole is probably my biggest inspiration. I love the art style, especially when Spyro characters are the subject. So cozy and nostalgic! Especially as a huge Spyro fan. The use of vibrant colours mixed with the soft shading is so pleasing to the eye. The rendering technique is definitely something I want to have a go at in the future. It makes for incredible concept art.
Please check out Nicholas Kole’s art! He makes awesome stuff! vvvvvv

Playing with values. The third one is my favourite. Not sure what colors to go with for this guy, whether he’s a snow leopard or a cheetah. I added some color to his jacket and t shirt, though.
