How was your iconoclast phase?
Iconoclasm (”destruction of icons”) is the destruction of religious images or icons. There was a period of iconoclasm in the Byzantine Empire in the 8th century, during the reign of Leo III, who forbade the veneration of icons.

She shivered upon feeling his touch, deeming it an unexpected gesture and shyly glanced at him again. Not that she didn't like it though, but 1452 had made their relationship quite uncertain and took away the firm conception that he hated her. Now she couldn't know what he felt and doubted every option. Perhaps he resented her for not saving him as a nation as well? Papal States smiled and felt compelled to laugh faintly at the question. It wasn't especially funny or a sort of mockery. It's just that... it meant that the series of lies she had built about herself during the last centuries were about to shatter in a process that had already started in May 29th, or a tad before. "Because my vows say I must protect you. Because I couldn't let you die in my arms and do nothing to prevent it. Because I have grown so used to you in ten centuries that not having you praying fervently, painting icons, singing or nagging me due to my poor bathing habits if a prospect I am not yet prepared to face and I don't think I ever will. Because of so many reasons... and because as I really badly tried to express in that kiss I gave you, I love you." She used her free hand to wipe the tears that had started to wet her cheeks.
Introduction (AU event)
It was all over. The city had fallen. Turks were everywhere and they had no mercy after the complicated siege they had faced. At least the Byzantine Empire himself was about to get a more tender death, as Papal States had stayed even in the end, holding him after he was stabbed. He held her hand with the last bit of strength he had left. His eyes couldn’t even remain open for long. And then, she kissed him, and he felt life his own breath getting lower. Being in Papal States’ arms like that probably was the closest thing to Heaven he would ever feel. Until she broke the kiss. It probably was time to die now.

"Hello", she replied softly, finally lowering her hands. "I am glad you finally woke up. You must be really confused." Papal States sighed, trying to figure out how to start the explanation. "I took you out of Constantinople and you fainted during the journey. You are currently in Rome, in my chamber. No one knows who you are, although some want to. Of course, it is unsafe to reveal your actual identity. I have only said that you are a refugee from Constantinople. News are spreading, given that... well, the city fell to the Ottomans." She paused and shyly reached out to him. Then she shook her head and drawed back, hugging herself. "The world whispers about your death and the disappearance of your body. So obviously in their eyes, I am a widow now and must mourn you properly." Papal States looked away. "You may stay here by my side or leave to live on your own, it's your choice. And I as well, will reply any question that you see fit to ask me."

The following days hadn’t been easy at all. Papal States refused to leave him alone for long, both fearing someone might hurt him if they knew who he was and wanting to explain everything to the Byzantine rather than having him be even more confused than what he surely would be. But of course, she was still a nation on her own and had business to attend. And a boss to explain everything to, including who was the person whom she had brought and requested urgent help for. The doctor said he was getting better. Indeed, he looked less like a corpse as time passed, though the fact that he wasn’t waking up was still alarming. Clad in black, as to the world she had become a widow, she continued praying as usual and hoped that her mourning clothes were just pretend, given that the empire would return to consciousness “soon”. The prayers were just whispers, as if to an extent, she didn’t want to disturb his sleep. Sensing movement, she was distracted and turned to see what happened, believing the doctor had arrived. Instead, she gasped at meeting his gaze. She felt genuinely happy, covering a light smile with her hands. However, she remained silent, just mentally thanking God for allowing him to continue living.

The circumstances wouldn't change that belief, and she was glad to rescue him if he needed to be saved. Following that, she looked after him during the road and whispered words of hope, even if perhaps he couldn't listen to them due to being unconscious. It took weeks to arrive to Rome, no matter how fast she tried to go. Given that he hadn't woken up during the journey, Papal States was fearful of his condition so after getting off the horse, she took the Byzantine in her arms again and took him to her room, laying him on the bed. Then she called a doctor. Through the following time she stayed by his side, frequently kneeling to pray for his recovery.

“It’s okay. You were really strong”, she ushered. Indeed, he had been through a lot that day and was still resisting. That made her really proud, and softly remember he had always been like that. She initially felt like she should wipe his tears and hug him, but the second thing could disturb the wound and it was better to do the first one later. After checking that the road seemed clear, she started to run again. Due to the Byzantine’s insistence, Papal States had already prepared her own escape from the city, so she knew where to go. The circumstances made her thank the fact that she was used to running a lot, or she wouldn’t have resisted. Even so, her feet were starting to hurt upon reaching the already saddled horse, perhaps because of her scars. First she placed him and then she climbed onto it, letting Byzantium rest against her. Now she was free to wipe his face, which she did carefully and proceeded to start on what would be a long road to Rome.

She had expected that. If the situation wasn't already so grave and dangerous, she would have wanted to stop. That wasn't be best idea, though, because it was only going to make his pain longer. And on the contrary, a hurry could affect her capacities and make her lose precision, needed to properly treat the wound without unnecessarily harming him. Keeping the same pace, Papal States finished the 'job' and left the utensils. "It's done", she announced and retrieved something from the bag she had with her: her own cloak. She covered him with it, to prevent people from immediately identifying him as a Byzantine soldier in the road and to spare him from the further sight of his own blood. Of course, she could've also used his own, but taking it off meant moving him too much and the wound should not be disturbed. After that, she picked him up again.

“Thank you. I will be as careful as possible.” She stated and let out a sigh. After mentally organizing what she would do, Papal States handed him something to bite. His screams could alert nearby Turks if he was heard, so avoiding that outcome was necessary. Soon, she started to work on the wound, not before stopping the bleeding. For the moment, it seemed to go well even though the wound seemed deep, although guilt stroke her as she knew the other was in pain due to the process.

This was a very good ocassion for red clothes, which hadn’t been intentional at all, just the most comfortable ones she could wear without having to take off the armour she had under it; a loss of time. However, instead of acting, she stared at him with an almost pitiful gaze. It wasn’t convenient to just stop, but she couldn’t start the process without his approval. Especially if he had just protested and seemed so fragile. “I must do it in order to save you. You have lost too much blood and if it continues like this, you will die. I am not going to touch it if you say no, but please reconsider it. You could live beyond this day.” She bit his own lip, hoping he would perhaps change his mind.

Perhaps if she wasn’t desperately trying to avoid the Ottoman Turks, she would have stopped to at least explain her plan to him or listen to whatever he was saying. That, plus the pressure of what falling would mean had rendered her unable to think logically for the moment. She did slip twice, gathering herself before she fell and dropped Byzantium. The closer they got to the walls, the more blood there was. Out of breath, she managed to arrive and laid him on the floor, given that there was no better option. As soon as she found the objects she needed, she kneeled beside him and started to check on his wound. “Listen, Byzantium. This will probably hurt. I am going to ask really difficult things to you right now. First, to make the less noise possible. I will give you something to bite. Second, to try to stay awake.”

She had repeated the phrase in her mind several times. ‘I choose the Papal diadem’, he had uttered in his already broken tone. Guilt overcame the representative of the Papal States as she wondered. Could she actually let him die, knowing she would continue living after that? It was a horrible feeling, to just abandon someone who even trusted you in their last moments. To have them holding your hand and staring at you while you were frozen in your place Those thoughts made the kiss, initially supposed to be a blurry confession by itself, bitter. “I refuse...”, she started, in a very serious tone “...I refuse to let you die here and now.” She closed her eyes and let go of his hand, suddenly taking a very reckless decision that perhaps would anger more than a few people. As the Western nation stood up, she held the empire firmly in her arms and started to run as fast as she could towards the place where the doctors had been during the siege.
