That's awesome to hear! Starting in comics is one of the most challenging but rewarding things ever, and I really salute you for going out and trying it.

Why am I posting this?

Because I know I have a lot of young people following me, and because over the past few years, I've seen a shocking amount of anti-gay rhetoric in MY comment section. Of my Steven Universe fancomic. An extremely lgbtq-friendly show.

So what gives? My best guess is, I have a very wide following, and a lot of these readers are pretty socially insulated in conservative spaces that don't allow them to explore the concepts of the other side of the argument.

I'm not about to judge children on the environment they were raised in... but I'm also here. I'm a part of the environment. And I'd like to offer some perspectives.

I really wanted to do a comic about Obsidian and try to make a comic with little to no dialogue in it so this was an attempt to do that.

Obviously the outcome of this comic directly contradicts canon so let’s just say this is an AU lol

This might be a dumb question but was Steven healing Lapis before freeing her the catalyst for her embracing the worst parts of her character or is there more? I know Lapis has been through a lot and that she's made plenty of bad decisions in canon. I was just wondering if the reason her path has branched off in such an opposite direction was because she was able to take revenge on the gems before she even left the mirror. I'm kinda bad at media literacy. Love your story and writing!

That's a good question! I don't think you're bad at media literacy - that's definitely one good theory about WHY everything happened the way it did.

I don't know if I can reliably answer your question though. For one, it's because I think I SHOULDN'T - it's more fun to have readers keep on speculating about these kinds of things.

And also, it's because I really can't say myself! Ultimately, the way Lapis acted here had multiple reasons. One of them may have definitely been her ability to enact revenge being stronger. (Plus she was still trapped when this all happened, which means she had a good reason to keep on attacking.) Another part of it could have definitely been the fact that Steven tried to stop her from leaving/telling on the CGs. She was amiable to him before he began to defend them. Unlike the original Steven, he wasn't just clueless - he was willingly aiding their cause.

That's about where it started to go downhill - but as for the part that LED to these events - I think your speculation is as good as any!

So in the end - I don't think your assessment is incorrect! I think it's definitely a part of the larger puzzle. :)

I remember you explained your process of choosing the questions to Steven quite thoroughly a while ago but I was wondering something. Sorry if I make you repeat yourself.

Up until now, did you manage to have all the asks you needed to push the plot forward?

I know you have a stock of questions that can be useful but did you ever need to slightly tweak one or compose from multiple ones to have what you needed? Or maybe it's the fun of it to have this restriction? Or just kinda both?

Actually, so far 99% of the questions have been selected and used as-is! I get a LOT of questions, and I try to save any that I need to use later, so they've built up. I have about 200+ in the drafts box right now, labeled with random stuff and season numbers in case I need to look for them again. I just do ctrl+f and go through until I find one that works.

A few times I have to crop the question though - either because people do this:

"Hey Steven (QUESTION HERE) and also btw chekhov (UNRELATED OUT OF CHARACTER THING HERE)"

but aside from that, and the one time I shortened a question because it wouldn't fit into the titlecard phone screen, I don't think I've changed them too much. I could be forgetting stuff, though.

this is kind of trivial but i remember in your Rose refrence page that her eyes are always overshadowed by her bangs, and in the newest chapter (the Roots one) she seems to lack this shadow in a few panels

is it intentional? because like, i'd forget i even made that design decision, so i feel like asking before making assumptions lol (not asking what it means if it's intentional, i know that would 100% be spoiler)

I think that might be a bit on me - I didn't mean to imply she ALWAYS has to have the shadow. In fact, I don't draw it all the time. It comes up in situations where Rose has something to hide, primarily. It's kind of an environmental signal.

But there are plenty of times when she doesn't have the shadow! It depends on how silly I want to make her look.

And yes, sometimes I just forget. There are a few times in older comics where I should have done a shadow and just didn't - because I didn't do a lot of extra shading back then.

So, I saw your post about Pink vs Rose (thanks for that btw; honestly the best response I’ve seen to talking about Pink’s past with respect to Rose) and I wanted to ask: Do you also feel weird about people who hint at or mention Rose shattering Pink in their asks? I made an ask a while back that was supposed to have a sort of tongue in cheek reference to that, but I wonder now if even that was too much.

Haha, I don't really mind that much anymore. I don't think it's a great offense or anything - and I get why people are eager to push the plot forward by sending those asks. It's exciting! You wanna see the drama! I get it!

The issue is, I'm an immovable object, and I advance the plot only at the rate I want to (which is painfully slowly). So although I harbor no ill will towards those that send those asks, they mostly go ignored, I'm afraid. I just don't think 'Steven finds out about the biggest plot twist of the show from a random anon' would make for a good story beat. I prefer asks that are more open ended and encourage Steven to explain or explore his environment, rather than those that specifically lead him towards narrative points you guys want to see.

I was reading your Tumblr and I find something you said really curious...

In canon, Steven's powers are normally activated when he's dealing with any kind of strong emotion

While White Steven's powers seem to work when he's more... "stable" to put it in words

Indeed! Thanks for highlighting that, as it was very much on purpose.

I tried to make it obvious in the Season 4 finale, when Steven was struggling to pilot the Macle - because his emotional state was frayed.

He does indeed need to be (relatively) calm to successfully use his powers.
