Ask ARA public update! Radoslav and ARA do a little back and forth. I realized it’s fine to not force comedy into every single strip, so I did a bit of character-world-work here, just a basic premise on how they speak and view a few things.

“From FK: Welcome back! I’m re-working Ask ARA a little bit. It was getting overwhelming, intimidating, and with so many questions asked from Tumblr, Patreon, elsewhere, I needed a better structure to go on.

Ask ARA will instead take questions from my Patreons, I’ll sift through and poll out the best to next continue with, in a “choose-your-own-adventure” style set pieces. These will be in small story-like structures. While not canon, it’ll still display characters, worldbuilding, with occasional 4th-wall or popular humour thrown in, just like before. I hope this makes it a bit easier on me, and more enjoyable as stories for you all.

Introducing Zeta, the head of Kaltag’s AI group. She’s a taller, more experienced, slightly sassy figure, modeled after a custom species of mine.

(Hi guys! It’s been a long time since I’ve updated Ask ARA. The  TL;DR reason is because of my indecisiveness to pick ideas to draw, and intimidating comparisons to my other work. I’m going to restructure it a bit, mostly supported by my patrons, as this is a Patreon-rewarded goal, starting in February. Art and such will still be posted here for all! Just trying to make the scope more manageable.)

Do you 'eat'?

“Well.. I -can- eat, but I fear I don’t get the same satisfaction as you all from it. It’s not required, but I can consume! I just cannot taste. ...yet.”

Why do anthroids wear clothing?

“We don’t always, there are some models designed to operate just fine without them, but for much of the reasoning is aesthetics. It also helps some fit in and makes others more natural or comfortable to be around!”

What kind of recreation is aboard you ship? As in do they have an open arboretum, halo deck, or social club area like 10 Forward on the Enterprise?

“Of course! For the organic lifeforms there’s plenty to do. Play activities, simulations, lounges and such. Only strictly private or specialized vessels might not have any. We have a lot of sports and recreational game-type things here, I should go over them sometime.”

Just out of curiosity Ara, what the maximum amount of calculations you can make per second?

“I can say that my limits peak at around, what you might measure as 3 zettaFLOPS. Our measurements and scales are quite different from yours, as well as our limits on nano-technology. Because of certain physics properties in the Rishan galaxy, our tech plateaus at certain points that might not always line up with the Milky Way’s idea of tech advancement!”

“ARA, how often do you run into other ARA units when your ship is at a station or planet? And how many of you have been in one location at once (outside of Kaltag HQ of course)?” - Volpethrope

“Let’s see.. I have been in the presence of a few others before, and it was a test to record how my base, experimental programming, is being passed down the line to the other units. Though they vary in appearance and personality coding, other ARAs carry whatever portions of my programming deemed positive, to the network for them to update from. It has always been an interesting experience, like looking into a mirror I think!”

“Do you use kinetic  weaponry  or energy based weaponry?” - Darth Satais

“Both, in varying degrees. Kinetic ammunition plays a large role in stellar warfare, even though energy weapons are regarded as more advanced. A lot of this varies from ship manufacturer to another, or from one sovereign to another as well, but for the most part... Ship shielding is often a projected barrier that protects against energy weapons, and armour protects against kinetic. There are versions of shields that are designed to detonate kinetic ammunition, and there are armour designs that disperse energy ammunition; but it would require incredible amounts of power and inertia to design a ship capable of both armour and shields protecting against both kinetic and energy.

So often times, shields are more common since energy weapons are more common due to ease of use, firing, maintenance, and cost. Kinetic is still useful for bombardment, or versus certain types of installations or large ships.”
