I-I’m beggin’ ya…” Lia looks dismayed, saying “Oh, Felix, not you, too…” Felix is shaking and trembling all over, responding with “I’m sorry-! Mayday draws the confused Regis up close to his own face, saying “Listen, don’t ask any questions. We need to disable the lockdown IMMEDIATELY.” Regis looks confused, saying “Ah? What? But I still don’t know what’s going-“ He trails off as he looks behind Mayday to see Vash. From Regis’ perspective, Vash’s expression is shadowy and ominous, and a terrible dark aura emanates from behind him. With a terrified expression, Regis begins to shiver, pointing a finger over Mayday’s shoulder and saying “T-that’s him, isn’t it!? V-Vash the S-“ He is interrupted by Mayday, who says “Regis. Either help, or get out of the way.” In this panel, we see Mayday making a stern expression, and behind him it is clear that Vash isn’t making a spooky expression at all. Vash mostly looks tired and a little uncertain, a few tears still clinging to his lashes. Lia is also visible. Regis grimaces, holding up his hands in surrender as he says “Sorry, sorry! I’ll help, I’ll help! Please don’t shake me anymore, Mayday. Third hall is locked down, so Felix just went through fifth to check the alarm-“ As Regis speaks, Mayday puts his hands on Regis’ shoulders, turning him around to steer him forward in the direction he indicates. Mayday says, “Good, we can get to the control room from there-“ but he stops short, and we see Amity behind him, looking anxiously up at Mayday. The page ends with Mayday looking over his shoulder and saying “Vash,” as Regis looks anxiously on in the background. ]

In the next panel, we see Lia and Amity in the same position in the current time. Vash’s expression is wide-eyed and hollow, despite the tears. We see a series of long, empty hallways stretching out as the four of them head out, leaving Juno unconscious in the hall. We see Juno’s hand beginning to twitch. The four proceed down one long hall after another in silence, their footsteps echoing down through the red illuminated halls. We see Amity and Vash mirroring one another. amity’s expression is wide eyed and fearful, and he is beginning to sweat as he clutches anxiously at his shirt. Vash similarly clutches at the wound in his chest, his expression worried and anxious as tears continue to slide down his cheeks. This is where the page ends. ]

He says “Why did Juno point a gun at us? Was it… was it something I did?” Lia leans forward to cup Amity’s face in both of her hands, expression anxious as she says, “No, Amity! None of what’s happening is your fault! I’m so sorry, if I’d realized it would be like this, I…” Her eyes fill with tears as Amity looks up at her with concerned eyes, touching her arms with his hands. Mayday looks from one side to another hurriedly, between a very distressed Amity and Lia on one side, and an unconscious Juno and sobbing Vash on the other. Mayday takes a deep breath, before grabbing Vash by the collar and Lia by the arm. He begins to drag them away down the hall with a stern expression. The page ends with Mayday gritting his teeth and dragging Vash one one side and Lia on the other. Vash is still crying, saying “ow ow, heeey!” Lia and Amity simply look shocked. Mayday says through clenched teeth, “Sorry everyone! Walk and talk. Let’s go!” ]

Wow! 20 pages! I've never had a comic go on this long before. And yet, we've just barely gotten started!

We then see his hand reaching down to pick up his glasses from the foreground, while we see Lia, Amity, and Mayday in the background. Vash asks, “Mayday, how we lookin’ with that door?” Mayday looks back and forth between Vash and the console, saying “Ah- Right!” Meanwhile Lia looks concerned, tentatively reaching a hand out and saying, “Vash…?” Mayday continues, looking down at the console with a serious expression, saying “It’s not lookin’ good. Lia was right, we’ll have to disable the security override. To do that manually, we’ll have to head to the control room and- OI! Vash!” Mayday turns to see Vash dragging Junos limp body over to one side of the hallway, setting her up in a sit against one wall. Mayday, with a frustrated expression, says, “She just shot you!” As Vash does so. Vash them slumps down into a sit next to Juno, cringing in pain and saying “ow- owowowwie…” He empties all of the bullets from the revolving chamber of Juno’s gun. As Lia, unseen, asks Vash, “Are you all right…?” Vash puts his head in his hands and begins to shed tears. The page ends with a closeup of Vash’s face. Big tears roll down his cheeks, and his expression is plainly distressed as he holds his head in his hands, sobbing and saying, “What’re we gonna do, Rem…?” ]

You care too much about life to take it away so casually.” Juno’s expression becomes rattled and furious, and she tightens her grip on the trigger, saying “I said- STAY BACK!” As they say this, they fire the gun into Vash’s chest. We view the action from behind, seeing only the flash of the gun firing, and we can see that it does not exit through Vash’s back. What follows is a quick sequence of events, Vash wincing and losing his glasses at the impact, as well as the others wincing from the loud gunshot. In the background, Mayday swears, “Shit!” Vash immediately grabs the barrel of the fired gun, prying it from Juno’s grip and bringing the butt of the gun down on her head, knocking her unconscious. The page ends with Vash standing sadly over Junos unconscious body slumped on the ground, clutching his bloody chest wound and looking sad, while Mayday, Amity, and Lia all look shocked in the background by the door. ]

Still holding up his hands and smiling, Vash begins to sweat. He is seen saying, “You want to help the people in this ship, right?” As Amity and Lia cower behind him. Mayday is seen looking over his shoulder as he turns back to the door console again. Juno grits her teeth in disdain, saying “I came here for a JOB. And CUT THAT SHIT OUT, MAYDAY!” They snap and turn their gun to point at Mayday, who hurriedly pulls his hands up, looking caught. The page ends with a shot of Vash’s booted foot taking another step closer down the hallway. ]

Amity, Lia, and Vash look around in alarm as Mayday, with a frustrated expression, starts to fiddle with the console by the door, saying “What’s going on?? A lockdown?” Lia, worried, adds, “But we haven’t had a lockdown in years…” We get another single panel in the color motif of the flashback, showing a younger Vash looking on fearfully in another, similar dark hallway. The next panel shows Vash in the present making the same, fearful expression. His head is ringed by a red, spiky halo. Amity appears to be the only one to notice this red halo on Vash, and bits of a similar spike red begin to appear around his head as well as he looks on, clutching at his shirt where Lia holds him in her arms. [ Image ID: The page begins with the doors sliding open to reveal another scientist whom we haven’t seen before. He is tall and imposing, with a severe expression, a wide build, and a curly beard. Vash stands protectively in between the newcomer and Lia and Amity, but as he does Amity throws his hands up in the air, looking delighted as he exclaims, “Mayday!” As he does, a wavy blue halo can be seen ringing his head for just this panel, which Vash takes notice of. The humans do not seem to notice or acknowledge this blue halo, as if only Vash is aware of it. The scientist called Mayday says, “Hey, kiddo. Lia, listen. Radar shows a large vessel approaching fast. I heard Vash was already here, and we aren’t expecting a shipment. Do you know what’s going o-“ He is interrupted by Vash, who says “There’s no time! If you care about what happens to Amity, you’ll help us leave as quickly as possible!” Mayday and Vash stare at one another, Vash looking pure and determined and Mayday looking a little bewildered, saying “Wh… I… I don-“ before regarding Vash for another moment. Ultimately, he seems convinced, albeit confused, saying, “All right.” The page ends with Mayday waving Lia, Amity, and Vash to follow him out the door, with Vash breathing a sigh of relief. Mayday says as he goes, “We can head straight to the South Bay. We can get you onto one of the short range vessels.” Lia says “Thank you, Mayday,” as they exit into the hallway. Amity looks concerned. ]

Vash cuts in then, smiling his same tense smile and beginning to sweat a bit as he holds up his hands in a staying motion, saying “Think of it like a surprise vacation! But we should really get going. Er, otherwise we might miss our train!” Lia asks, “Right now?” Before gathering Amity into her arms to stand, resting the boy on her hip as she says with a solemn expression, “I thought we’d go first thing in the morning… but if you’re sure.” Amity looks shocked and appalled as he’s lifted, saying, “EH!?” Vash’s expression falls into seriousness once again, and he says, “I’m afraid so. In truth, we should have been gone already by now.” The page ends with Amity saying “But I want to say goodbye to-“ as the doors begin to open once again. ]

He looks a great deal like Vash, with wild hair that flips up and out in different directions, and a mole just under the right corner of his mouth. As they enter, Lia says “Amity.” Amity turns to her with a bright, happy expression, smiling broadly as he says “Lia! You’re back!” Vash watches with a very worried expression as Amity runs into Lia’s arms. We get a single panel in the same color motif as the flashbacks, showing a young Vash running similarly into the arms of a different human woman, Rem. He awkwardly turns to look away. Amity then notices Vash, still clinging to Lia as he gives him a suspicious look, asking, “Who’re you?” Lia answers, still kneeling down next to Amity, saying “Amity, this is Vash. He’s a dear friend of mine, and someone I trust very much.” With a visibly awkward expression, Vash smiles tensely and waves a hand in greeting, saying “Hello! I’m just here to look after you and your mom for a while. I promise I won’t get in the way.” The page ends with Amity, still hugging Lia, squinting suspiciously at Vash, while Lia looks both surprised and a little embarrassed to be called his mom. ]

Thomas: If you’re sure… How quickly do you think we could manage it? Vash: That depends on Lia and Amity, but… the sooner the better. Thomas: I see. I can go ahead and start making preparations. Getting Amity, readying his things… Lia: Thank you, Thomas. I think I should tell Amity myself… but could you get his things? Thomas: Of course. I’ll be discreet. Lia: Thanks, Thomas.
