“You know, I’m all for talking to animals, but I don’t think pigeons are the best company.” Hermie pointed out as she sat next to the boy, the birds fleeing in fright at the sight of her hyenas trailing behind her. “Clearly I’m more of a cat person.” She joked as they settled around her, Dotty curling up by her feet as Spotty leapt onto the free space next to her, and Chuckles gracefully lay down behind her head, on the back of the bench.

“Y-you’re telling me,” Syrtos pouts, crossing his arms over his chest as he glares at the birds, now flying away. He turns around to put a face to the voice he’d heard settling beside him, only to jump out of his seat at the sight of the hyenas. “W-woah there! T-those are so-some bi-ig ccats. Or...dogs? Y’know, I-I’m not really sure wa-what those are. Will they hurt me?”

Syr purses his lips and shakes his head. “I-I can vouch for y-you. So ca-can the scars you have.” He sighs.

“It’s gonna be fine.” James shrugs his good arm again.

He chuckles briefly at the surprise at the pirates and solar surfboard crash. “Yeah, pirates. Space pirates, back in my home network, but… yeah. Nothing new there.”

He laughs a bit. “Mostly, indeed. But it just… it is what it is, I guess. I’m about as reckless as my dad at this age, at least, so I’ve been told. So I don’t know how much that is ‘living the life’ so much as ‘trying to die at every conceivable moment’, so do with that what you will.”

He smiles a bit.

“I-if you say so,” he replies, unconvinced.

“N-nothing new? It’s pretty new to m-me,” he leans forward in intrigue, interlacing his fingers and setting his hands down on his knees.

“W-well, if you’re gonna d-die eventually anyway, y-you might as well live as full of a life as po-possible.” He pauses, realizing how dark that may have sounded. “I-I’m sorry. That was weird. Esp-especially coming from a demi-god, right? I-I don’t even have a good re-reason, I’m ju-just always scared.”

“Oh, there’s to-tons! I think the bio-mechanics exhibit may int-interest you. There’s also some early previews of tech tha-that hasn’t been released into mains-mainstream markets yet. Lo-lots of interactive stuff, too! And even a whole bun-bunch of stuff for kids to enjoy and—”

Cora snorted in amusement, “On the Isle, I’m wicked confident.  But here, I can’t seem to do anything right.  I know all the etiquette, but I know I’m messing up certain things.  All I have to do to realize that is look at Audrey,” she sighed, “And I don’t know if everyone likes me.  I’ve still got the murderer image…and I don’t blame them.  It’s not like it’s entirely undeserved.”  The princess shook her head.  This was about Syrtos, not her, “But anyway, you should remember that.  You’re not alone.  As far as I can tell, there aren’t many confident people here.  If they seem too calm and collected…they probably aren’t,”  she smiled and winked before adding seriously, “Everyone has a secret, a weakness, a fear.  It just takes a little digging to find out, and when you do- all that false confidence?  It’s gone, and you’ve taken their power.”

“I mean...I’m su-sure you’re not alone there. Learning and applying the et-etiquette in new places can be difficult sometimes. It’s ha-hard for me everywhere I go ‘cause I’m...well, it’s not that I’m n-not a people person, buh-but I worry too much about what I’m saying or do-doing.” Syrtos frowns as she mentions the image people have of her. He doesn’t know enough to make any judgement, but the Cora sitting beside him now is a gentle soul. A caring one. This alone tells him there has to be more to it.

“I guess some pe-people know how to apply that fake-it-t-till-you-make-it deal. I-I don’t know if it’s false, nec-necessarily. There are some hon-honest-to-gods confident people out there. But e-even they are aware that they have their lim-limits. I just wish I cou-could push my own limits more.”
