Ella took the cherry, biting into it absently while she thought about his question. How did she explain it? Simply, she supposed. “Well, it’s just, no one has ever wanted to kiss me before. Or--” she thought about her experience before. “Well, no one has ever asked to kiss me quite like that.” Not publically, she thought with a shrug.

When he asked if something upset her, she shook her head. “You seem awfully worried about that,” she told him with a small smile. “I’m afraid if you are so worried every time I blush, you’re going to drive yourself crazy. And, anyway, it’s hard to upset me.” Actually, he’d been sweeter than she knew what to do with, so far. It was silly to her that he was even asking.

“You worry too much. It was kind of the same as ever. Nothing’s changed, though I don’t think it ever will. A few people from school, Dita.”

I worry just the right amount, thank you very much. No, that’s one of the funny things about home, it never seems to change. O-oh. How is she?

“I’d love to.” Baron said as he followed Ella’s lead and sat back down. He coughed a little at what Ella said next. “I-Well, it could be, in the wrong situation. It’s certainly forward. Which works sometimes, and sometimes… It doesn’t.” He said sheepishly. “You… You really don’t have to keep apologizing, honestly. I’m just glad I didn’t offend you.”

“Not at all. I’m flattered. Confused, maybe, a little, but definitely flattered.” In truth, she didn’t see why someone would be offended. He wanted to kiss her! That was a very kind thing for someone to say.

And then it dawned on her. He wanted to kiss her. What a strange thing. No one had ever said anything of the sort to her. Certainly, not in public, and not all that earnestly. That detail of the whole thing hadn’t occurred to her until just now, and she was finding herself blushing a little and averting her eyes, not sure what to say. The moment was gone, after all.

[laughs] Oh is that so? You have the monopoly on stuttering in this relationship? I don’t know how to break this to you my dear, but you’re a lot better at causing stuttering than you even know.

I certainly don’t think so. You never stutter.

[laughs, embarrassed] Oh, you caught that, did you? I was hoping I’d gotten away with it. [presses his forehead to hers] I’m alright.

Not quite. Stuttering is my job. *presses her lips together* I’m glad.

He...just...ignored you? I thought you two used to get along.

“You’re certain?” He asked, breathing a little easier. He was still confused to what exactly what was happening, but at least her vehement denying he’d made her uncomfortable eased him a little. “I… I’d like to stay. If you want me to.” He said slowly, moving back towards the chair but still not sitting. “I couldn’t dream of holding it against you. But I don’t know. I just offered, since it was decidedly inappropriate.”

Ella nodded firmly. She was, at least, certain. “Yes, of course. Please stay, if that’s what you want to do.” Slowly, she lowered herself back into her chair, waiting for him to do the same. Usually, she would not sit until he had, but it didn’t seem like he was going to until she did, and if they kept going like that, it would go around in circles forever.

Looking down at her glass, which was mostly empty, she shook her head a little. “I didn’t realize it was inappropriate,” she said, smiling as though she would laugh at herself. “I think it’s rather sweet of you, actually. It’s just that I’ve never had anything of the sort happen to me, and, well... I didn’t know what to do. I’m sorry that I caused you worry.” At that last part, she looked up at him, smiling and hoping it eased his nerves more.

Fan-fantastic. I just heard you and thought you might not be okay. But. Cool.

No. *whispers* Are you okay? You stuttered?

barrellockwood:

“You… I mean, did I make you uncomfortable?” How did she not know what constituted too far? That seemed like something that would be innate. Didn’t it? He looked puzzled at her response. “Sure to… What?” He asked, prompting her a little. “Sure to me going? To me staying? To us pretending I never said the bit about kissing you?”

“Oh, no!” she said, waving her hands frantically. “No, gosh no. Well, maybe a little shy, but not because of you. Just because I’m...I’m not...goodness, no. Nothing you did.” she let out a breath, hoping she was being clear enough, but doubting it.

Ella wrinkled up her nose, trying to think out an answer. What was she saying sure to, anyway? “Well, certainly to you staying,” she said aloud, adding, “if that’s what you want,” as an almost-automatic afterthought. “And, uhm. Well, I’m not a very good pretender, you see. So I’m afraid that’s not going to work well. You’ll have to forgive me for that. And anyway, what good would it do, really?”
