Assam Rifles Role In 2nd World War
Assam Rifles played a significant role in World War 2 as part of the British Indian army. The British Indian army was a crucial ally to the Allies in the war and Assam Rifles was a part of it.
These army was first raised in 1835 as a paramilitary force to maintain order in the Northeast Frontier Province and was later absorbed into the British Indian army. During World War 2, Assam Rifles units were deployed in Burma (now Myanmar) as part of the British Indian army's campaign against the Japanese.
Assam Rifles units participated in several major battles in Burma, including the Battle of Imphal and the Battle of Kohima. These battles were crucial in halting the Japanese advance into India and were decisive in the outcome of the war in the region.
The bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers of Assam Rifles during World War 2 was widely recognized and several of them were decorated with military honors, including the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.
