Translation notes for Hishakai Shindo / Depth of Field ep 5
Obligatory obrigada to @my-rose-tinted-glasses
I think I like you... in this way.
I'm really sorry. I'm loose, so I'll give anyone a kiss… I'll be more careful (not to do so) next time/again. Well then/see you. Note: He's saying he's a bit of a slag. Note: He uses 'chuu', which is a kiss without tongue.
Hayakawa stopped having a need to take refuge in/to escape to the rooftop.
It's just that, strangely, that face (he made) is still stuck in my mind.
Isn't either fine? If the person I like is of the opposite sex, I like someone of the opposite sex. If the person is of the same sex, then I like someone of the same sex. When I meet a wonderful person, I can be either of those. Note: The terms he uses are heterosexual and homosexual, but I thought that in this context, it would make more sense to use the literal meanings of the words.
Really? I only know the Hayakawa of now/recent times, so that's new to me.
There's something that's always been on my mind/that I've been curious about. The reason you stopped coming to the rooftop. If I consider the reason why you were there, I think it wasn't bad (that you stopped coming). But it's always been stuck in my mind. Hayakawa. Was (what you said to me) really a lie?

they both do it, throwing harsh, untrue words to guarantee each other's safety above all.
and they get the classic villain spills relationship revelations for the main couple treatment...
...except MLC doesn't cheapen out and rely on it solely to do the work for the main couple: fanghua has known that relationship truth long ago.
the heart li lianhua and fang duobing have for each other transcends ego. as long as the other can escape danger, they'll say it.
(similarly, as long as xiaobao can live carefree without knowing that xiangyi, the one he admired as a kid, and lianhua, his very best friend, have terminal illness, then xiaohua would keep it a secret for as long as possible.)
i always find it fascinating that the back-and-forth between them is so reflecting of the work one does in strong, for the long term relationships. it's not the absence of roadblocks, but how they do struggle in them and emerge hearing each other's voice in every action.
(while it's thank goodness that secrets find their way out in the show version so that no regret wins, the very act of keeping secrets has always been rooted in tremendous heart for fanghua. this is an act that, through the relationship process, becomes understood by each other as such. hence why xiaohua's very last lie is met with xiaobao saying i'll save you anyway. and, it's something xiaohua accepts with a smile before he loses consciousness because that's what they do: with their all, lie to save your life and you'll save mine.)

Dept of field ep 1 subtitle notes
I watched the first episode of Depth of field and liked it. Unfortunately, I also exposed myself to Gaga's subs and they were subpar as usual, so I'll post my own commentary for my sanity.
At that moment/on that day, I threw away/abandoned everything.
I thought I had thrown everything away, yet I can't breathe.
I can't breathe.
On that day, I met a man who stays true to what he loves. His name was Konno Ryouhei. I feel like this phrasing is better while still retaining the original syntax.
-Kon-chan, are you like this even in your classroom? -Like how? -Like how you are now. -Pretty much, I guess. -Do you have any friends? -Stop asking questions.
-You really love taking photos. -It's pretty fun, I guess that means I love it.
You don't actually hate singing, do you? If anything, you seem to like it.
And one more thing. Why are you always laughing like that?
-Yeah right... -Don't do that anymore. -Is it really that bad? -You're only gonna wear yourself out if you keep doing that.
That's the face I'm talking about.
What kind of sex would Kon-chan have with girls?
What's wrong with me? Why did I think about that?
I thought I'd thrown it all away, and yet...
So, I'm an elementary school student (to you)?
#really appreciate more people tuning in and putting more context on the subs bec gaga is ass as usual 😭#THANK YOUUU#hishakai shindo

I need a fanfiction of Du Cheng hissing at everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) who talks in his car when Shen Yi is sleeping in passenger seat.
It would be nice if some of them open their mouth just to ask him why he drives so slowly and why he is taking the absolute longest route.
As always, I look at you my dear dear fanfiction writers, my godsend angels.

Translation notes for Hishakai Shindo / Depth of Field ep 2
Obligatory obrigada to @my-rose-tinted-glasses
I'm being completely used as my teacher wishes.
Are these photos from the camera you always use?
Wait, wait, wait. I'll return them, so give me a moment.
(It/he) is seriously bad/crazy. Note: As mentioned in other translation notes, Japanese is a high context language and speakers often leave out subjects in their sentences, which is why it isn't definite if those kids are criticising Shuichiro or his singing or both.
Shuichiro: I was told I was gross again. I also sang in class. The teacher got angry at me. Even though I'd already been holding back. Michie: Don't cry.
Try to hold back a little bit from singing during class. During your break time, (take this) and record (your) songs with it. By doing that, lots of your songs can be kept, can't they? Mum thinks that your habit of wanting to sing is extremely wonderful.
I should be having fun when I'm with Kon chan, but why do I feel irritated instead?
You don't understand. (I'm not) like you. (I'm) not able to do what I want and being accepted by the people around me (for that).
Your being right really irritates me/pisses me off.

Hishakai Shindo visual analysis (Ep. 1-2): "Depth of field" metaphor
"Because the depth of field is pretty shallow. So this kind of blur actually becomes a unique feature."
I so appreciate how Hishakai Shindo’s cinematography plays with the show’s central metaphor of depth of field. In photography, depth of field refers to the size of the area in an image where objects still appear sharp, and the drama uses it to great effect as a way to visualize Hayakawa's suffocating emptiness and his growing but conflicted attraction to Konno.
Look at the way the show's camera uses shallow depth of field (DOF) to portray Hayakawa's isolation from the world around him:
Shallow DOF is where only one plane of an image (either the foreground, midground, or background) appears in focus while the rest doesn't. Within the images of his everyday life, Hayakawa is literally placed on a different plane than the people around him. He either feels ostracized because of his love for music or smothered by the carefree performance he punishes himself with. Either way, there's something very lonely (and even claustrophobic) in the way the camera's subtle blur separates the image of his person from whatever else is in the frame.
Which is why we immediately understand the significance of his rooftop interactions with Konno through the cinematography's change in composition and DOF.
When Hayakawa staggers up the light-drenched stairway and onto the rooftop, he can finally breathe. He's surrounded by water but no longer drowning, which is punctuated by that edit of an air bubble underwater.
The overexposure and vast amount of negative space imbues the scene with an almost divine significance.
And this moment is of course captured by Konno's camera, stripping Hayakawa bare and human.
I think it's notable that in their rooftop scenes together, suddenly we see more two shots of Hayakawa sharing the frame and being on the same plane as another character. We also see more shots with deeper DOF. Konno's observant and uninhibited nature prods Hayakawa to be more present and honest.
For the first time, Hayakawa and his inner life are in complete focus to someone else.
