Latest In Tidy Garages Are Sectional Garage Doors
There are various types of doors suitable for garages and from the simple design many years ago of simple wooden doors through the ever popular up and over we now have what many consider being an improvement in sectional garage doors.
This type of door is popular these days because of their smooth operation which is much the same principle of roller blinds in that the various horizontal sections roll smoothly up before disappearing into the roof space.
The up and over type of garage door when operated manually requires the effort of pulling the handle up and out and a second action is usually required to then lift the bottom of the door to complete the action of pushing the whole door into the roof space. During this procedure the bottom of the door has to come outwards before going back to complete the whole manoeuvre.
With sectional garage doors the door rolls up and down in one smooth operation. The sections, (of which there any number above four), lift slightly apart as the door is being opened but when the door is being lowered and shut they fit snuggly together and create a perfectly watertight finish as good as if the door is just one solid article.
Another way to describe the action is to compare it with the old fashioned writing desk which had a roller shutter which with lock and key secured the contents in garage door repair glendale heights.

Most of these sectional roller type doors are best operated electronically and this is indeed how most of them are purchased and fitted. A remote control in the car or on a post just short of the garage automatically switches the action to close or open depending on whether the car is coming or going. The smooth almost silent movement has one other major advantage over the up and over variety in that the whole door can be made to fit very snugly beneath the garage ceiling.
The mechanical part of the up and over means this type of door has to rest a few inches below the ceiling of the garage whereas the sectional type of garage door can run on rails very much closer to the ceiling. This point can be critical with some garages that are often not designed for modern cars like people carriers and big four wheel drive saloons.
The size of the garage on some old and new properties is often simply too small for cars today and whilst there may be an excuse for this in houses built eighty years ago when cars were generally much smaller, there is no excuse in modern properties but unfortunately some property developers and builders know there is added value when the house can be sold with a sales pitch that it has a garage. In some cases this is almost a token garage and it can only be used as a glorified garden or tool shed.

Basics on Garage Door Torsion Spring Repair
There are many different garage doors; from roll up sectional to swing up and down. They come in many different sizes and shapes, from 16x7 two car garage, to single 8x7 car garage.. Some have multiple panels, some are single size. They can also be metal or wood and have custom windows, locks, and just about any security accessory you can think of. However, one thing that they all have in common is how they operate and the mechanism parts that are involved to make the magic happen.
Broken torsion springs: this is the most common garage door repair. On an average, a 'garage door spring' has a life span of 8-12 years depending on a manufacturer and the quality of the spring. Some overhead doors come with either 1 large torsion spring or 2 on each side making a total of 2-4 springs depending on the system. It is never recommended for anyone to attempt the spring repair without experience and proper tools of a professional. If this is attempted, you are running a high risk of injury to your hand and fingers. Trust me, it is not worth it. (Google image: "garage door spring repair injury" )
When your residential or commercial garage has more than one spring and one breaks or loses it's tension, it is recommended that you replace all of the torsion springs at once to prevent further damage to the panels and it's components in garage door repair venice.

Even though the garage system will function (if you decide to simply replace one) correctly, you may be running the risk of having the older springs break causing heavier load on the new spring and degrading its life span, leaving you with more headaches and expenses.
In some extreme cases, the door may drop without warning with no safety support, causing damage to the cables, panels, and the opener, not to mention what and who may be underneath it when the spring snaps.
If your garage has a single spring mechanism, we would recommend that you change your system to a double spring. Double torsion spring system helps to hold the garage door in place when one of them breaks. This is a safety feature that is used by most of the modern garage doors. The parts are widely available to quick, and inexpensive replacements.
Save yourself the time and money, get them all replaced at once!
It is recommended that you contact your local garage door repair company if you have any questions regarding spring or any other repairs to your garage before you attempt them yourself.

Choosing a Garage Door Opener
When it comes to choosing a garage door opener, there may be more items to consider than one would think. Garage door openers range in styles, price, and levels of noise they make. It is important to understand some of the basics about garage door openers before purchasing one.
First, there are three types of garage door openers: those with a chain drive mechanism, those with a screw drive mechanism, and those with a belt drive mechanism. Chain drive systems are probably the most popular, mainly because they tend to be the cheapest. Just as the name suggests, a chain is responsible for opening and closing the door. These types of garage door openers average around $150. Systems with a screw drive mechanism are more expensive, and use a mechanism that moves the door by running it along a threaded steel rod or plastic track. Typically, these are a not as noisy as chain drive systems, and do not require a lot of maintenance due to the small number of parts used. These units average around $180, but are probably the hardest type of opener to find. Finally, garage door openers with a belt drive mechanism are the most expensive type. Using a rubber belt to open the door, these systems usually cost $200 or more. They are considered to be the quietest option available, but may be more complicated to install. Some who choose this option end up hiring someone to install the opener, as it can be a tedious task in garage door repair manhattan beach.
Many garage door openers feature safety options that should be considered. Often the main safety feature is an infrared beam that will stop the door from closing if something is in its path. Some openers even have a feature that changes the signal each time the door is opened, to prevent signals from being crossed with neighboring doors, and to prevent unwanted intruders from gaining access to your signal.

All garage openers come with a remote to operate it. Some have battery back-ups in case of a power outage. Many also come with a keypad that can be attached to the outside of your home, so that you can open and close the door that way. This would be handy if you were going for a walk, and did not want to carry a house key or garage door remote with you. When you return home, simply punch in your code, and the garage will open for you.
It is important to look for the simplest garage door opener that fits your needs. Depending on where your garage is located in relation to the rest of the house, the noise level may not be an issue. However, if a baby's bedroom is located above the garage, the noise level may be the biggest factor to consider. Liftmaster and Genie brand garage door openers have received very good reviews, but are on the high end for price. Craftsman openers are widely used, and a bit more affordable. However, they tend to be noisier than others. The most expensive models do not necessarily mean they are better. They probably just have more features available, which may not be necessary for everyone. Consider what options are important for you, and make a decision based upon that; it may save time and money.

How to Replace Your Garage Door Torsion Springs
Many of my colleagues implored me not to write this article. In fact, some downright told me it was stupid. There is a stigma throughout the garage door service industry that you shouldn't deal with the replacement of your door's torsion springs unless you're a highly certified professional. I, however, know that there are many Do-It-Yourselfers out there that are more than competent for such complicated tasks. That's not to say that it isn't extremely dangerous. Torsion springs are under such immense pressure that if mishandled, they have the ability to maim and kill the repairman. That's why I believe I needed to write this instruction. At the very least, you'll understand what you're getting yourself into before you engage in this risky, but equally rewarding piece of home maintenance.
Before you get started, you need know what kind of springs you're dealing with. Torsion springs are located above the door and work together as a pair, providing a smoother and more even operation. They come in many gauges specific to the size and weight of your door and offer more control over the door when raising and lowering. Even though torsion springs are much safer when they break, they are much more dangerous to replace. I honestly recommend hiring a garage door service technician oaklawn to replace these. But, for all of you competent people out there that are willing to risk it, I'll tell you how to do it.
Now I'll explain the process for changing out your torsion springs. Let me just reiterate that this is a hazardous job; and that if you're not an engineer or otherwise mechanically inclined, you should go ahead and get someone to do it for you. Or at least have someone walk you through it in person. To perform this piece of maintenance, you'll need a ladder, a couple of C-clamps, replacement springs and a wrench. Now, torsion springs come in a variety of sizes and gauges. You'll need to find out what size your garage door unit needs and get them because tightening an incorrectly sized spring won't make up for it being weaker. Conversely, if it's too large, it simply won't fit the other components of your unit.
First you need to mark the cables with a permanent marker. There are drums on either side of your garage door that contain spools which the cable wraps and unwraps around every time you use your door. If the cables are still tight, mark a spot on the drum and the cable to align them later. If they're loose, pull them into place before marking them. DO NOT touch the drum or the cable with your hands. The spring may break and cause you serious injury.

There are two winding bars that are used to wind the spring. They're about a foot and a half long, made of steel or iron and should fit snugly into the holes of the winding cone so they have maximum leverage. The winding cone is located on the bar above the door, on the end of the spring. The bars should not be worn on the ends and shouldn't easily slip out of the winding cone. If the bars can move more than 1 inches while inserted into the cone, you need new bars. Mark the bars while they are inserted to see if they slip out.
Put a bar into a hole on the winding cone. Keep your grip tight. Use an open-ended wrench to loosen the set screws. This will place the spring tension on the bar, so hold tightly. Keeping the bar in the winding cone, rotate the cone to loosen the spring. If you meet any resistance, a set screw may need to be loosened further. Do not take your hand off the bar. If the cone will not unwind at all, replace the set screws and call a professional. After the cone is loose, continue rotating the cone until the spring is unwound. Insert the second bar on the first has been rotated downward. Repeat the previous steps on the other side.
Once the springs have been safely unwound, remove the bolts that hold the stationary torsion cones in place. The stationary cones are located on the other end of the springs near the center of the door. After you've removed them from the center, slide the springs to the side of the door on either end. Now remove the screw sets on the cable drum and take the cable off. Do the same to the other side. After you've done that, loosen the cable drums from the bearing plate they're affixed to. This should make the pole that holds the springs be able to slide side to side. Go to the right side of the door and push the pole past the bracket holding it. This will pull it free on the left side and make it possible to remove the left side spring and insert the new one. Before replacing the spring, remove the cable drum. After replacing the spring, put the cable drum back on the pole and repeat this action on the opposite side.
Make sure the springs are on the correct side by looking at the end nearest the winding cone. The end of the coil should point up and the winding cone should be away from the center. Once this is done, slid the springs to the center cone. Almost there. Put the drums back into position and re-bolt all of the hardware. Use your cable markings to gauge where the cable drums should be placed. Tighten the set screws on the drums; then tighten them one more half turn with a wrench. Put the cable back into the slot on the drum and pull the cable to the outer edge. Tighten the pole to remove the slack. Now, attach the springs to the center cone.
Using the same bars you used to unwind the springs, wind them in the opposite direction. Remember that the bar is taking the force of the springs until the cone is set in place. Hold your grip firmly. The springs will get longer as they're wound. If they do not expand, they're not put on right. Your standard 7 foot door needs 30 quarter turns to achieve tension. An 8 foot door requires 34 quarter turns. Once wound, replace the bolts with a wrench.
Mark the pole, with the spring on, about a quarter of an inch out from the spring. Put a bar in the bottom slot of the cone and turn it slightly away from the door. Now take the second bar and tap the bar in the slot while pulling the first bar toward the center of the door. This will set the cone in place. Keep tapping until the cone slides out to the marking. Once you hit the mark, pull the bar away from the door until it is at a 90 degree angle. Last, just tighten the set screws until they reach the pole and then tighten them about another turn. Make sure to oil your springs so they more easily expand and contract.

Quick Introduction to Garage Door Springs
You know those springs that are located above the opening of your garage door, well those are commonly referred to as garage door springs expert. And there are two sets of springs; torsion springs and extension springs. Each set of springs are paired up on either side of the door and wound tight with a constant diameter bar, made from steel, to keep the necessary tension.
Like all mechanical things, these parts are going to break after years of use no matter how well you maintain them. Usually one spring breaks before the other, but due to the imbalance the other good spring quickly breaks too. While replacing extension and torsion springs is relatively easy for a handy person, it can still be a very dangerous task. There have been many deaths due to garage springs, so if you're not great with fixing things around the house, it's better to leave it to professionals.

But, if you really want to replace the torsion springs yourself, you should follow these precautions; make sure you wear sturdy eye protection and proper safety gear, and make sure you have a partner there to help you. This goes without saying, buy make sure to use high quality bars for adjusting and winding the tension in the springs, as well as assuring the whole replacement is firmly attached to the frame. When you're winding, make sure you use a bar that is not complicated, but always be aware of the potential violent harm that could occur if something goes wrong.
You're torsion springs are likely the first to go, but your extension springs will also fail eventually. These springs are would extremely tight, and they generate substantial torque when lifting the door. To get an accurate sense of what type of extension springs you'll need, you have to know how much your door weighs. Also knowing the make and model of the garage door is also very helpful.
Make sure you never compromise quality when you're looking for replacement parts, especially with something as important and frequently used as garage springs. If you go for a higher quality garage spring, you won't have to worry about replacing them anytime soon.

What Does Your Garage Say About You?
As we all know from programs like 'through the keyhole' you can tell a lot about someone by looking at their home. From an un-tidy home overflowing with clutter to the clean, organized and ordered one - every room within every home says something about the owner. And if you really want to see what someone is like without their make up on, the best place to look is probably the garage!
When someone steps into your garage what impression do they get - an organized and methodical person or a chaotic 'clutterhugger'? Well there are those beyond redemption of course but for most of us we have to admit that the garage is not exactly how we would like it. In fairness that probably doesn't mean we are psychologically unhinged it just means that we haven't got round to it and even when we do, where do we start and how?
The garage is usually the forgotten corner of the house which makes little sense really considering the trouble we all go to find space elsewhere. We convert attics and cellars when we have perfectly usable ground floor space in the garage if only we could make the most of it. But with careful planning and effective design the humble garage can be transformed into a stunning and practical room that solves the normal problems. To help you get rid of your garage issues we have put together five top tips that will help every home owner to spruce up their garage and create a better, more effective garage door repair.

1) De-clutter and organize: First of all sort all of those unwanted items that you never use. You'll be really surprised how much room this frees up without the need for extra storage. And before you send it to the tip or recycle centre consider whether you can sell it or give it away. Once you've done this it's wise to invest in some practical garage cabinets or wall storage to get all of your equipment off the floor and into a place where you can find everything quickly and easily. Doing this will free up a lot of space and will make your life so much easier
2) Change the floor: Because of the nature of the garage there can often be oil leaks or paint spills that create an UN-safe and messy floor. There are many different flooring solutions from porcelain or PVC tiles to resin or aluminum according to your needs but a suitable floor will make all the difference to you garage. Forget floor paint - it may seem a cheap solution but it simply won't last and you will probably find it flaking up within months or sticking to the tread of warm car tyres.
3) Lighting: With the garage now being used for a variety of different reasons it is more important than ever to ensure that everything is well lit. To create the perfect lighting introduce strong LED spotlights across the whole of the garage. Not only do these create excellent light but they are also extremely efficient. If you have specific work areas consider lighting these separately, for example with under-cabinet lights.
4) Security is key: With expensive tools, garden and sports equipment stored in the garage, it's essential that they can be secured. Leaving them scattered around the garage can create a dangerous environment and is an invitation to the light-fingered! There are a number of locking garage cabinets and cupboards on the market that will help to solve this issue.
5) Make the room your own: As we said, you can tell a lot about someone from their garage. So style the garage to fit your lifestyle. Whether you are sports mad, are an avid car enthusiast or love DIY, the garage is the perfect room to tailor to your every need. So why not fit some memorabilia or pictures to make it your own.

There are many different types of overhead garage door to choose from and you should research the features of each before making a choice. An overhead garage door can add a lot to the looks of your house and it is probably the first thing that people will notice when they come over. So you should make sure that the door does what you need it to while fitting into the over all look of the house.
Each type of overhead garage door has advantages and disadvantages. The most expensive type of garage door is the traditional wood type. It looks great with many different home styles but does not last as long as the other types. Over time the wood will expand and contract making the door break down from continued use. So you will spend a lot of time and money repairing this type of door.
Aluminum doors are popular because they are cheap and will last much longer than a wood door. You can even buy an aluminum door that has a wooden fade. The drawback is that the material is very light so it dents easily and does not provide very much insulation.

They will not look right on every house but steel doors are a nice compromise between aluminum and wood. It can be made to look like both of them and will last a very long time without deteriorating. The steel door is heavy enough to allow it to be heavily insulated which can really help out in the winter. The only drawbacks are that they are usually twice as expensive as the aluminum doors and they are heavier so it puts more strain on the motor that raises and lowers the door. That can lead to replacing the door motor more often than on the other types.
Fiberglass doors are sometimes used in houses along the coast because they will not corrode or deteriorate in the salt air. They are very light and tend to crack or break easily so they are not the best choice to use anywhere else.
No matter which type of overhead garage door that you decide on it is a good idea to look into having it insulated. You can lose a lot of your hot and cold air through your garage door if it is not insulated. If you act quickly, the federal government is offering a $1500 dollar tax credit for some of the specialty insulated doors. Just contact one of your local overhead garage door repair companies to find out more about the types of doors available and their pricing.

The Latest Sectional Garage Door Repair
There are a variety of forms of doors acceptable for garages and by the straightforward design many years back of easy wooden doors throughout the ever popular up and above we today have what many believe being an advancement in sectional garage doors.
This sort of door is famous nowadays due to their smooth functioning that is much the exact same principle of roller blinds so that the different horizontal segments roll up smoothly before evaporating into the roof area.
The upward and above kind of garage door once managed manually requires that the effort of pulling the handle up and out and another activity is usually needed to subsequently lift the base of the doorway to finish the task of pushing the entire doorway to the roof area. In this process the base of the door must come outwards before return to finish the entire manoeuvre.

The segments, (where there some number over four), lift slightly apart because the door has been opened but if the door has been lowered and closed they fit snuggly together and make a perfectly watertight end as great as if the doorway is simply one strong post.
A different way to describe the activity would be to compare it with all the old fashioned writing desk that had a roller camera that with lock and key procured the contents.
The majority of these sectional roller type doorways will be best managed electronically and this is really how most of these are bought and fitted. A remote controller in the vehicle or on a pole only short of their garage automatically transforms the action to shut or open based on if the vehicle is going or coming. The smooth virtually silent movement has another big benefit on the up and above variety because the entire door could be built to fit quite snugly beneath the garage ceiling.
This stage could be critical with some garages which are usually not intended for modern cars such as people carriers and large four wheel drive saloons.
The dimensions of the garage on a few new and old possessions is often just too small for automobiles now and whilst there can be an explanation for this in homes built eighty decades back when automobiles were normally much smaller, there's absolutely no explanation in contemporary properties but sadly some property builders and developers understand there's additional value once the house could be sold with a sales pitch which it's a garage. Sometimes this is virtually a token garage plus it may only be utilized as a glorified garden or tool shed.
