Steven and Connie sitting in his car. When the radio announces a warning about a killer on the loose.
Dark AU thing for spooky month
tw: death, vampirism
-----
Ronaldo climbed into Steven's Dondai on a rainy night off highway 32, and the door slammed out the sound of the storm outside, replacing it with raindrops against the metal roof. He had called Steven knowing that the younger boy was loyal and understanding - even though he woefully ignorant to the nightmarish world they lived in.
"I said not to bring anyone," Ronaldo snapped. He glared at the girl in the front seat, Steven's girlfriend passed out. She was just as woefully unaware of the nightmares that lurked outside.
Steven shrugged. "Sorry. She's having a rough night and I couldn't leave her alone."
He crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes. "You shouldn't have brought her along. I'm doing dangerous work, Steven."
"Right." Steven barely covered up a snort. "You're vampire hunting. Can you keep it down? She's gonna be grumpy if you wake her."
Eyes were rolling in the rearview mirror - willfully ignorant and dismissive. Steven's body was loose, relaxed like he didn't have a care in the world. Ronaldo wished he could be so lucky.
He began explaining exactly what he'd seen, what he'd down, but Steven turned up the crackling radio to drown him out, replacing his serious concern with cheery pop.
Thankfully, he didn't have to listen for long. As Steven pulled out onto the road and began the journey back to home, the local station was interrupted by a news bulletin.
"After identifying the cause of death is the same as the previous two forest murders, Beach City officials have concluded that this is the work of a serial killer. Authorities are cautioning citizens to remain indoors."
Ronaldo swallowed the lump of fear that swelled in his throat and muttered. "See? It's dangerous out here. You should've left your girlfriend at home."
"What? Connie's dad is a cop. She knows all about this stuff." Steven laughed, and flicked the radio station over to something else - country music that hissed and crackled with poor connection. "Did you know that all the murder weapons have been stakes?"
There was sweat on the back of his neck. A tightness in his chest. He tried to sound calm, but heard a slight stutter in his voice. "Then maybe someone is out there taking the problem seriously."
"I mean, maybe." Steven hummed and drummed his hands against the steering wheel. "The thing is, a stake through the heart would kill most stuff, wouldn't it? So how would you know if what you killed was a vampire or a person?"
"A magic detector," Ronaldo muttered, gritting his teeth. "Ghost hunters have similar tools."
"Right." Steven nodded, and the tone wasn't exactly mocking. Ronaldo still bristled at it, waiting for the moment where Steven began to taunt him for his crazy beliefs. But Steven continued on, "A magic detector. But how would you know if the magic you're detecting was from a vampire and not something else?"
"Something else?"
Steven look back at him, his face oddly serious as the windshield wipers beat ahead. "If vampires are real, who knows what else is real, right? So what if instead of killing something that eats humans, you end up killing a magical creature that didn't do anything wrong?"
"Stop the car."
He would walk home. He would call a cab. The tension in the car was something ugly. Steven pulled over, shifting the car into park. As Ronaldo reached out for the door, hand trembling, Steven said, "I just think that there might be more to this, you know?"
The handle stalled uselessly against his hand, the door still locked as he yanked. Steven clicked his tongue. "My bad. The child safety locks are on. Do you know what magic creatures do have in common with vampires?"
"Steven, unlock the door!" His heart was pounding erratically in his chest now, and he jerked the handle again and again. His fists beat at the window, trying to pound through.
Steven raised his voice, never losing his calm tone. "We can make more of us. It just requires a lot of energy so we don't really do it. To easy to kill the things we feed on, you know?"
He clawed at the handle more. Fumbled with the little button of the lock, that slipped through his sweaty fingers. In the front seat, Connie began to stir. She groaned as she groggily raised her head.
"Oh, man! I told you not to wake her." Steven laughed. "She's a real monster when she first gets up."
"Let me out!" he shouted. "This isn't funny!"
"Of course it's not." Steven turned around in his seat, and when his eyes met Ronaldo's the older boy stilled. Steven's eyes were dark pink, almost glowing in the dim. "You killed my mother."
Then Connie was twisting, whining a little in her seat as she doubled over. When she looked at him her eyes were odd too - blue and deep and dark and almost reflective.
"What are you?" he rasped.
Her hand reached out, fast as the lightning outside. Connie's fingers curled around his neck, and though she wasn't squeezing it was getting harder to breathe somehow. Each new breath he drew came worse, and soon he was gasping like he was old and wheezing. His arms and legs felt weak, but he still raised his own hands. He grabbed her wrist, but that was all he could do. It was as immovable as iron.
"I'm starving," she whispered shakily. "Steven, I don't know if I can stop."
Pink and black stared him down, Steven's sweet voice cool and distant. "Don't worry about it, Connie. Take all you want."
Ronaldo tried to speak, and found himself unable to force a single word out. Darkness closed in around his vision, what was left of it beginning to blur.
"I think this guy's a vampire," Steven said, and the world went dark.
