A reminder when you don’t do as well as expected

I just got my exam results back. I didn’t do as well as I hoped. I got a C for Art which was absolutely devastating. The C pretty much means nothing, I need an A. For over 4 years I’ve been living, breathing and sleeping art. I put in so much time after school and weekends only to get a C, while many other people got an A. My friends were also shocked at my result.

As a result, I can no longer do advanced art this coming school year and I don’t wish to repeat the year. Imagine how it would feel for someone to tell you the only thing you’re good at, the only thing you really love, isn’t for you.

For a few days I was absolutely devastated and disappointed in myself. Then I came to a slow realisation. Fuck them. Just fuck them and what they think. Yes it’s great to get a good grade, on creative subjective things like art and English. But it needs to be accepted that not everyone will like your work. It’s unfair and it’s devastating. The school system is fucked up. They don’t care how hard you tried.

The message of this post is, don’t let a grade decide who you are. What you can do is absolutely beyond their small minds. Don’t stop writing because you got a bad grade in English, don’t stop running because you didn’t make the goal time in phys ed, don’t stop learning a language because you made a few mistakes in that speaking test. And most of all, don’t stop doing what you love because a piece of paper tries to tell you what you can and can’t do. You know what you can do, so keep doing it because you’re amazing. Do not let others define you.
