Seattle Gothic
-You stand in the shallows of the Puget Sound. The tiny waves lap at your calves, harmless it seems, but they can change so quickly. Be careful. The change will not be to your favor.
-You can’t see the space needle from where you’re standing and that worries you. Where has it gone? You can always see the space needle so why not now? Where are you?
-The clouds have covered the mountains again. You wonder how big they’ll be when they reappear. They can never seem to pick a size.
-You flinch when you go outside. The sun is out. It’s been raining for five days. You’d forgotten there was such a thing and it hurts your eyes.
-You went for a day trip last weekend and still haven’t recovered. Maybe you never will. You can still feel the pull of the forest under your skin. It seldom lets people out and it wants you back. You’ve caught yourself wondering if maybe you want it back too.
-You walked along a smaller road to put some distance between you and the heavy traffic but that was hours ago, you’re sure of it. Looking back, you can’t see the corner you turned to get here. You look forward again and there’s a street that wasn’t there before, one that takes you back to the larger road you’d walked along before. When you get out you check your phone. You’re five blocks ahead of where you started and only two minutes have passed.
-You push three quarters into the coin slot of the haunted cola machine. You pick random, the only choice available. The cola it spits out has been discontinued for fifteen years. You drink it. Tastes like home.
-The Statue Park seems like a nice place to spend a few minutes of your day off. You go in at lunch time, resolved to spend an hour there at most, an easy job since it’s not very big. You blink and the night guard is informing you the Park is closed now. It’s sunset. You’ve been here for six hours.
-That two story sculpture of a girls head at the beginning of the waterfront trail is as impossible to comprehend as ever. You know that logically she must be three-dimensional, you’ve walked around her before and her angles change like any three-dimensional thing, but you could swear she’s flat as a paper. No matter what angle you look at her from she is flat as paper. Your skin crawls just looking at it.
-You’ve heard the high numbers of missing people but you’ve never lost someone yourself. Have you? Have you always left a space on the sidewalk for no one in particular? What happened to the person who used to walk next to you?

CALL DOWN THE HAWK // It’s actually been a really long time since I’ve enjoyed a book as much as I enjoyed this one — which is to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is beautifully written and fantastic both in content and language, intriguing in all the best ways, and every time I had to put it down I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Today a little boy was engaging in “pulling pigtails” behavior, pestering a particular girl. I told her, and the class, that sometimes when little boys like someone they’ll act like jerks just to get their attention.  The rest of the class hooted, the boy protested, and the girl grimaced and said she knew, her mother and older brother and old teacher told her.
I continued on to say that just because a boy likes you doesn’t give him an excuse to be a jerk, and you shouldn’t give them a chance to get your attention until they learn how to behave and her face was priceless. Basically, picture a tiny elementary school girl with red bows in her hair embodying the spirit of this gif:

The boy went super quiet.

i never talk about these things but i can’t remain silent.
i know tumblr doesn’t give a SHIT when things happen in countries outside the “most popular ones” (such as the usa & england). it’s true, don’t lie to me. y’all don’t give A FUCK. not every issue and problem in said countries gets the appropriate exposure but in general shit shows up on the news WORLD FREAKING  WIDE. you set up donations, you help out, your spread the word, you say “pray for x”……
southern europe is burning.
my country is burning.
people are dying - at home, on the road, trying to run away, in their cars.
yesterday my country had 300 active fires.
people are losing EVERYTHING they own.
i have a friend that is on a train right now passing through places that have been burnt to the ground and she says the smoke is so intense it’s getting inside the train and she can barely breathe.
and yet, even though several people (myself included) have been trying to bring awareness to what has been happening in southern europe… what we get from most of you, those not part of the countries suffering, is silence. we don’t ask for money, we don’t ask for shit other than a reblog to spread awareness… something you can delete in 24/48hrs if you wish.
i don’t know what to tell you. i’m angry. i’m frustrated. i’m disappointed. i feel like i’m screaming into the void. “a reblog does nothing” - you know that’s a damn lie, you know exposure always helps, you know people start paying attention when posts on social media become popular. my country in particular is a small one, we get ZERO exposure. y’all are only starting to figure out we even fucking exist bc of the shit we’ve been winning lately.
but hell, if the EU doesn’t give a shit, why should some user on tumblr dot com?
again, i don’t know what to tell you so i’ll let the images speak for themselves:

Leakey’s Bookshop, Inverness. Scotland’s second largest secondhand bookshop, with around 100,000 books. The building, dating back to 1793, used to be a Gaelic church, giving the shop two floors, high ceilings, and beautiful windows.
