Welcome to my e-Portfolio in Media and Information Literacy

Along with the drastic changes in technology is the need to adapt in modern society as it continuously invades everyone from generation to generation. Anyone born after 1980 has not experienced life before the introduction of personal computers and has enjoyed the conveniences of modern information technologies. It presaged an enormous change on how people live their lives and how they interact with each other. The world of modern media has also become a tool of evolution and social control as it prompted everyone to get involved in the digital world.

Electronic mail or E-mail, instant messaging, text messaging, and social networking sites are changing the traditional way of communication between other people. With the massive expansion of available technology and technology use, it raises the question as to how this popularity of communication technology could influence one's mind and action. That is why, it is crucial for us, "netizen"- a person who is an active participant in the online community of the Internet (Merrriam 1984), must exhibit critical thinking in absorbing news and information. Likewise, the social media even the mainstream media today has been subjected to various issues such as fake news, logical fallacies, psychological manipulations, direct deception, rhetorical and propaganda tactics and obscurantism which leads to its questionable reliability and credibility. Prior to that, the media and information literacy education aims to empower each individual's ability to evaluate, analyze, use and produce information that is only true and accurate.

Proper education is definitely the best way to eradicate the miseducation regarding technology, media, and information. This will enable individual to interpret data and information and make informed judgements as users of modern media, as well as to become skillful and responsible producers of news and information. It is both wise and timely for this course to raise awareness in examining information before believing in it and be a critical thinker who was not be easily influence by some information from unreliable sources. It promotes a wide range of understanding in order to be engaged in a digital society and to be able to effectively access, inquire, interpret, organize, analyze, evaluate, and yield eye-opening messages for social change in a variety of forms. The transformative nature of media and information literacy upholds creative works and generating new knowledge; to publish and collaborate responsibly requires ethical, cultural and social understanding.

As a 21st century student, the modern media prompts me to enhance my skills in media and technology in order to adapt to society's demands. This integration of information and communication technology within the curriculum is a positive shift from computers being viewed as digital boxes to be learned to computers being used as a platform and communication tools raising awareness for social dilemma and safeguarding the freedom to generate and share knowledge and information to other people. Furthermore, recent learning methods recognize the 21st century educator as experts who embrace the digital teaching techniques and inclusion for students to be creators of knowledge through modern media.

I am currently studying Humanities and Social Sciences at Polytechnic University of the Philippines and Media and Information literacy is one of my subjects. Surely, I believe that this course will allow me to be a critical, progressive and active citizen that will uphold internet etiquette, an individual who will make informed judgments, and will be a creator of new knowledge and information that will not only contribute to my personal growth, but in society and humanity's growth as well.

This Portfolio will serve as a platform that will enable me to provide you of my own deepest understanding of what Media and Information Literacy is all about. Through this, I will be able to share my experience, information and knowledge with you as I take this journey of enhancing my ability not just to learn how to use a computer, but to have the ability to interpret, manage, analyze and use it to make informed analysis, use various communication and media forms and to share new knowledge. It is important to keep in mind that we must not use the modern media for entertainment purposes only, but we must use it to influence one's mind through an inclusive education.
