holy shit, I didn't know this and I'm a born and bred Southerner (uh, American South); to me, it's just something we'd say to play with the word "picnic" because it's a little clunky by the rules of modern English phonotactics that preclude starting a syllable with a "kn" consonant cluster and the concomitant tendency to insert an unvoiced intervocalic neutral vowel between the /k/ and the /n/, which comes out as /ə/ because that's the neutral vowel in English and it gets analyzed as the singular indefinite article "a/an" without additional context

(Hey, I'm sure this wasn't intentional, but I thought it was important for you to know this, about your spelling of picnic on the bear post.) Using pic-a-nic as the spelling has some racist connotations related to lynching Black americans. The origins of the word picnic are not related to this (it originally comes from french). But specifically, the spelling "pic-a-nic" is really close to "pic-a-n**" (shortened version of the n word) that does have some relavance to lynchings.
