Do you know if Sherlock was ever actually used as a name? Or did Arthur Conan Doyle make it up?
Yes! It was an actual name of Middle English origin, sometimes a nickname for a blond person. Shir meaning bright or fair (possibly related to the root word for shine? idk) and lock meaning hair. It was more commonly a surname before the Sherlock Holmes books came out but it was occasionally a first name. An adjacent name is Whitlock, meaning white haired (or blond) which is a pretty common surname too.
I have been watching the Granada series (I’m about halfway through series 2) and I love it.
References for the drawings: “Smoking is strictly forbidden in this compartment” is based on a moment in the Granada episode The Greek Interpreter. The “three pipe problem” quotation is from The Red-Headed League (short story). The black outfit, basically I just wanted to draw my version of Sherlock in the Granada outfit. Tiny Sherlock with scarf and blanket is because of how wrapped up he was in The Musgrave Ritual (Granada). The hat quotation is from The Blue Carbuncle (short story). And the deerstalker and cane drawing is just for fun, no specific reference.
SHERLOCK HOLMES (1984-1994) ♦︎ 40th Anniversary ♦︎
“To me, the Sherlock Holmes stories are about a great friendship. The two men are interdependent; without Watson, Holmes might well have burnt out on cocaine long ago. And Watson leads a pretty dull life, enlivened only by his adventures with Holmes. I hope the series shows how important friendship is.” – Jeremy Brett
this episode really showcases holmes' emotional side. in my opinion, holmes' palpable disgust and disdain in this moment surpasses any other scene in the series. in the next scene, holmes declares passionately with frustration, "i am not retained by the police to supply their deficiencies." i consider that quote to be the most important line in the entire canon of sherlock holmes.
And since there are a fair number of new people in these parts it's probably worth saying, yes, you can!
Over time I've come to realize I'm making a thematically queer game here. At first I was really hesitant to call it that - it's not a romance game, after all. It doesn't have much visibly, overtly queer content. I was scared about misleading people.
But it's inherently about two people whose relationship doesn't fit inside a conventional box, who don't have an easy existing societal framework to apply to themselves, trying to navigate that situation. I think that's a universal constant of the Holmes&Watson relationship which is baked into the canon. What could be more queer than that?
The writing is deeply informed by my experience as an aromantic asexual and a platonic or queerplatonic interpretation was always my baseline (you write what you know, y'know?) , but over time I realized the joyful thing about games is that players can choose?
So yeah, ultimately you can decide that Holmes romantically loves Watson, or that he has a deep platonic love for him, or that he sees him as a brother, or that he doesn't really know how he sees him beyond knowing he wants to be with him always.
The game is mostly zany point and click antics, but that aspect is there, and I feel it's important.
