For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums. 

Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years. 

Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it. 

When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever. 

Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.

the level of petty people seem to have reached in 2019 just discourages me. like, one would think humanity is making some sort of progress but at the end of the day it seems there's still a lot of childish bitterness resting on the inside. it's just very sad how people go out of their way to trash someone they don't know. matter fact, none of us know most of the people on this site personally and yet some take the liberty of making ridiculous accusations

the people sending in hate are clearly ones who've never ran a RP in their life. like its so stressful? can these anons shut up. theyre the reason RPs close within days

not to mention theyre probably the ones that complain about how theres no good rps in the tags. its sooo annoying. admins get so mistreated its fucked up.

they posted the first couple of posts withing exactly 3 minutes of each other, and then the rest were staggered. that's just what you do when something is waiting in your drafts. also, it's not a problem that they did that but if they're fcs you know people are going to want it'd be nice to give people a heads up before they write out an app thinking they have a chance. it's their rp and they can do what they want, but it's disappointing for people who aren't their friends.

i know some of the people who were accepted in the first 3 posts and i know they don’t know the admins.  so if you have anything besides this conspiracy theory that proves that they did actually queue the post, then send it my way.

there’s a difference between having an opinion and spreading lies with no actual proof to back it up.  the admins of lunar clearly worked incredibly hard to make this roleplay happen and the fact that some of you think you’re entitled to a faceclaim is sad. if you think the admins queued the acceptance posts, provide proof. instead of sending the same anon to several rpts then lying about being one of the admin’s friends.

the fact that a post like this even has to be made is absolutely horrendous. admins do so much to craft and promote roleplays so for some of yall bitter trolls to sit here and shit on them because you didn’t get the faceclaim you want. it’s 2019 and yall still don’t know how to sit down and accept the fact someone got an app in quicker than you did. just apply for another fc since you have the time to be so angry about not getting your first.
