Emilio chuckled. "We took a short cut."

Alessandra shook her head. "I am not used to this."

"Hon, no-one ever is," Simi replied.

"Nick was right; I should have been more careful what I wished for."

"I'm told you should never tell Nick when he's right."

Conveniently, there was a bench for weary tourists to sit on just outside the chapel and he gratefully sank down only to jerk straight back up, having forgotten to remove his backpack. Robby cursed.

NaNo Day 15

"You're not contagious, are you?" asked Nicole, drawing back a little.

"Nope. Just no stamina."

Chloe fluttered a hand to her chest in a gesture of exagerated relief. "Not that I'm relieved you're still feeling bad," she added hastily. "I just don't want to get ill!"

NaNo Day 14

"Damn." Edward looked back over his shoulder. "I was hoping you'd tell me otherwise."

"Why?"

"Because it's one thing to know the supernatural exists. It's quite another to be faced with that reality. And no, " Edward added, "you, my friend, do not quite count as supernatural."

NaNo Day 13

"Though I suspect the next few days, at least, will mostly feature your cultist friend being horribly sick."

"Good," said Daniil vindictively "He deserves it."

NaNo Day 12

"With what you said, there are a few things it might be, and, of course, the scientists could be right."

Edward chuckled. "I could turn my kitchen tap on and a dragon could pop out. That doesn't mean it's particularly likely."

Apparently there's an evolutionary theory that the reason why Africa has so much wild big-ass megafauna while the big-ass megafauna on all the other continents went extinct is because they evolved right beside humans, and knew us well enough to not get hunted into extinction.

So while everything from giant koalas to giant sloths barely had the time to think "what the fuck is that" before getting pierced by a spear and getting their bone marrow gently fed to babies and the toothless elderly, Africa had elephants who had all the time in the world to learn to tell apart human languages and teach the next generations of their herd which human sounds mean that this tribe won't hurt you, but humans who make this kind of sounds are a danger. And hippos learned to conclude "I think I'll fuck up this two-legged weird shit on sight."

"You can't just waltz into a gal's kitchen like this," she said, keeping her tone light. "It just ain't polite." Her eyes fell on a bloodstained mark on his shoulder and her next words were far more serious: "Holy crap; have you been shot?"

NaNo Day 10

Simi sat on the veranda, a glass of wine untouched beside her, listening to the sound of the surf. She loved this time of night, with the moon beginning its descent below the horizon. Few other people were around and it felt, for a little while, like the world was as it had been when she was a child.

She snorted. "If they'd really wanted to harm the research they would have torched the filing cabinet. Even now, most of what I do is on paper."

"Dinner, I'll allow." She smiled. "Particularly seeing as I can smell the curry and it smells delicious."

"I hope you don't mind vegetarian."

"Not at all." Joelle leaned back and stretched. "As long as I don't have to cook it." Her smile turned sheepish. "I'm afraid I'm terrible with tofu."

"Kari!" Mark's greeting revealled he'd already had a pint or two. "You've made the important part. The post-game drinks."

Kari laughed as she took up a seat. "Did you win?"

"We did," said one of the others. "Forty points to seven."

"Technically, I'm not supposed to throw fireballs in the house," Ryan answered.

"Count me in."

"Any particular requests?"

"Other than no anchovies, no."

"I don't think there's a single person in this college who wants anchovies," said Becky with a grin.

"He is a small weasel of a man. Other than the cult, he seems to have no friends, and I don't think the cult liked him above a little. He also has nothing much in the way of family - he was an only child of only children."

He glanced at his surroundings and tugged his coat closer as he started to walk up from the ferry landing and into the village proper. The weather might have been better today but that didn't make it warm.
