I love Pacific Rim because they really said "you can defeat giant monsters with the power of queerplatonic relationships and unspeakable mecha violence".

newt, following up on the 3-day long argument with hermann they had postponed for the weekend, as well as a brief rendezvous where they got a new couch for their apartment: [brandishing an Interpretive Flowchart he made about all his points in a fit of acute neurosis] in conclusion, OBVIOUSLY aladdin didn’t make his monkeys vest himself there was CLEARLY a tailor or middleman otherwise involved… SO WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT??
hermann, post drift sequence, who has seen every crevice of newts memories including all of his embarrassing ones, quoting a phrase he barely understands like an arcane latin chant to knock newt out in one go: mmm. if i may bring this to the table, consider, vriska did nothing wrong?

I know newmann is so last decade but idgaf because I’m here to talk to you about both newt and Hermann being autistic
They initially clash so horribly because newt is “no volume control” and Hermann is “if I hear one more loud noise I’m going to combust,” neither of them have a filter, and neither of them have any grasp of social situations. This means that while they can’t stand each other, they also find that they somehow UNDERSTAND each other.
The lab is their safe space, and they might argue and bicker and push each other’s buttons, but then they also recognize it as a place where they can drop the masks. Hermann is free to go ten hours without speaking if he wants, and Newt can stim dance to his the same three songs over and over without anyone staring at him. They infodump to each other constantly, and end up sitting together for every meal because although they might not exactly like each other, no one else is going to listen to them talk nonstop about their newest theories.
Newt struggles to regulate his emotions, and has had several public outbursts that people have learned to just ignore. Hermann, on the other hand, shuts down when he’s overwhelmed, and on multiple occasions has had to endure people going “hello? Earth to Dr. Gottleib,” which doesn’t feel great either. In the lab, Hermann dutifully doesn’t react when Newt screams and rants, just allows him to let off steam without making him feel like a spectacle. Conversely, if Newt walks in and Hermann doesn’t respond to what he’s saying, he takes it in stride rather than forcing conversation.
Basically I’m just emotional about these two being two different flavours of autistic, and learning to coexist and support each other in their little safe haven

John Carpenter's reaction to Godzilla Minus One winning Best VFX at the Oscars is so heartwarming to me.
He would've been eight years old when he saw the original American release of the first film. In his preteens, he was making short claymotion movies with his favorite movie monsters, including Godzilla. He's been a fan of this series since the inception, and it just won its first Oscar. He must've been feeling like a kid again.
