Atlas talks: popular science fiction tropes

Science fiction is a very fluid genre however there are some repeating tropes and clichés that are often used. So today I'll be listing some popular sci fi tropes.
Before we get to the longer list, there are these seven tropes that are often called the 7 elements of science fiction. These elements are considered the backbones of all science fiction and a science fiction novel or movie must have at least one. (Note that it's not required ro have all as most science fiction meduas have at least two)
The 7 elements of science fiction are:
Time travel
Teleportation
Mind control, telepathy, and telekinesis
Aliens, extraterrestrial lifeforms, and mutants
Space travel and exploration
Interplanetary warfare
Parallel universes and fictional worlds
So now let's get into my big list or tropes amd clichés in science fiction, I gathered these myself so I apologize if some seem redundant.
These tropes are seen throughout many diffrent science fiction films and movies and you can also use them as inspiration for your own story. For each trope I have tried to add a movie or book that uses these tropes in their plot.
Tropes and clichés:
Oxygen leak –The Martian
Time travel –Back to the Future
Bad/evil robots or A.I. – 2001: a space odyssey
Hyperdrive/ faster than light speed travel –Star Wars
Alternative universes – Dead Astronauts
Generation ships or cryosleep – Wall R
Last survivors – 9 (the movie)
Aliens- both evil and good – E.T.
War – Avatar
Racism/ xenophobia – Enders Game
The argument of sentience and what it means to be human – Blade Runner
Playing god – Alien: Covenant
Interspecies romance – The Shape of Water
Space pirates – Harlock: Space Pirate and Cowboy Bebop
Ancient tech – Finch (Ambergris Trilogy)
Clones – Annihilation
Ethics – A Clockworck Orange
Utopias or dystopias – Divergent
Wrecked or doomed earth – Midnight Sky
The chosen one – Dune
Post apocalypse – Mad Max
Worm holes and black holes – Interstellar
Ancient/ ancestor aliens – Alien: Prometheus
Plot twists – Maze Runner
First contact – Galaxy Quest
Food replicators – Atlas Alone
Technobabble – Star Trek
Reality being turned upside-down or exposed – The Matrix

Atlas talks: 1984- by Geoge Orwell

One of my favorite books ever: 1984 is a dystopian and cautionary tale that talks of the dangers of totalitarian regimes and the eradication of free speech/thought.
Overall rating: 10/10
I absolutely love this book! Alot of people tend to dislike it, mostly because they had to read it for a highschool class. However, I decided to read it on my own and really enjoyed it. The worldbuilding in this book is amazing and incredibly rich, despite not really needing to be. The twists and turns of this book are very captivating and I would love to re-read it sometime soon.
Plot/story: 5/5
I love the messages of this book and I found the pacing really captivating. The book goes at a pace that makes you think that everything night turn out good for the characters and then tears that belief apart. The ending of the book will leave you wondering what the hell you just read.
Characters: 3/5
I actually didn't like the characters very much in 1984. Julia is a very undeveloped character and I found it hard to tolerate whenever she spoke. I wish the author had given Julia more character development. Winston is also a pretty bad person, I didn't feel any connection between him and Julia and I never really felt any sympathy for Winston. I did, however, really like O'Brian as his character was very mysterious and menacing. O'Brian really is who drove most of the story forward even though he spends most of it in the background.
Cohesiveness: 5/5
Some people have found this book a bit confusing but I personally had no problem when reading it. As stated earlier; I really loved the worldbuilding in this book, and I found the parts where Winston was reading the forbidden book really unique.
#my first book review on this blog and i felt i should start easy with a book that i like to talk about!#atlas reviews: books#1984 book

Atlas talks: Interstellar 🌌

Interstellar is an absolutely phenomenal space opera about a man named Cooper who goes on a deep space mission to hopefully save the earth from extinction. It's a deep and compelling movie about space travel, earth preservation, and love.
Overall ranking: 10/10
This is one of the best sci fi movies I have ever seen. It's an absolute emotional rollercoaster that will leave you full of wonder and amazement. This movie does an amazing job at portraying space, the future, and time. This movie is directed by Christopher Nolan, who is also know for The Dark Night, and Inception.
Plot/story: 5/5
The plot and storyline of this movie is absolutely amazing. Following Cooper and his fellow explorers on their journey is like no other. Interstellar connects you to the characters and their motivations intensely, and your always left thinking about what will happen next.
Characters: 5/5
The characters in this movie are amazing. You get to see their inner desires and what drives them, making them very compelling. Following them through their journey you can't help but feel for every character in this movie. For example; Cooper wants nothing but to see his family again, and Dr. Brand wants to see her lost lover one last time. This movie makes even more sinister characters extremely connecting, like Mann who wanted nothing more than to leave his planet.
Cohesiveness: 5/5
While this movie deals with very complicated themes like space and time travel, I feel it does a very good job at explaining them. Interstellar does a wonderful job at explaining the certain problems each character faces and how they strive/come about fixing them. For example, on Miller's planet it's explained that time is slowed there due to it being near a black hole.
Soundtrack: 5/5
This soundtrack is absolutely amazing! Like my post about Dune I actually plan on making a separate post about Interstellars soundtrack specifically so keep an eye out. Ths soundtrack for this film is made by Hans Zimmer and has the most brilliant use of a metronome in music that I've ever seen. The music in this movie is absolutely genius, and is incredibly beautiful. It really helps drive the emotional parts of the movie and fits the mood very well.
Visuals: 5/5
The visuals in this movie are absolutely stunning. The overhead shots of the diffrent planets and the black hole are very beautiful. All of the more environmental shots are amazing and the individual character shots are amazing as well.

Atlas talks: Dune (2021) 🌅

Dune (2021) is an amazing "heros journey" movie about a man named Paul Atreides, who must survive on a vast and dangerous dessert planet to try and save his family and people. This movie is one of two parts and the second part is currently set to come out in 2023.
Overall ranking: 10/10
Oh man how I loved this movie, I had the chance to see it in theaters wich was really spectacular. While watching it in the theaters I found myself never wanting it to end. I watched the original movie (made in 1984) a few years ago and loved it, so I was very exited when this movie was announced. It's a high fantasy-sci fi set in a completely diffrent universe wich some have found confusing, but I really enjoyed it.
Plot/story: 5/5
Some people found the plot of this movie ro be confusing, however I was able to track what was happening quite well. The movie does not stray from the plot at all and stays on track. I found the plot to be very enjoyable and immersive.
Characters: 5/5
I liked the characters in this movie and I feel that they were portrayed well on screen. I loved how menacing the Duke Harkonnen was, and his character references to Apocalype Now (a film made in 1979) were really cool. I live how mysterious each character is in their own way, they all really helped drive the plot forward.
Cohesiveness: 4/5
While I do understand the plot of the movie, I'll admit, it is kind of hard to remember some of the names. The characters and story are very compelling but films can sometimes be confusing if you don't remember who each character is. That being said I do not criticize this movie (or book) for this, as I do really enjoy a fully immersive film.
Soundtrack: 5/5
Oh man do I absolutely love this soundtrack. I plan on making a side post going further in to the Dune soundtrack specifically, so look out for that if you are interested. The soundtrack is made by none other than Hans Zimmer himself, who I regard as an absolute genius of his craft. Hans Zimmers scores paired with the beautiful visuals on screen is what really makes this movie so wonderful. Hans Zimmer did an absolutely amazing job on this movie.
Visuals: 5/5
This movies visuals are absolutely amazing. The movie is directed by Denis Villeneuve who also directed Blade Runner 2049. Denis Villeneuve does an amazing job at portraying scale in his movies, and providing amazing visuals for the movies he directs. I believe that he was absolutely perfect for directing this movie as it provides some amazing visuals to go with the story.

If you havnt seen this movie already, I highly recommend doing so!
Thanks for reading!

#atlas communicates/ informs : this tag is for any other post on this blog that isn't a review. The word communicates will be if I'm just talking about something and the word informs will be for when I make a more educated post.
I will also be using some classification tags such as #sci fi books/movies or a tag that mentions a sub-genre of sci fi, #apocalyptic books/movies for example
