i've seen a few people claim that jess treated rory's friends badly, but i really want to know where they are getting that from??

the first time we see him interact with lane, he asks her for a pen/pencil in class and she's a little tense because they're taking a test, but he doesn't say anything mean to her. the second time they interact is when he gets his car and lane is being rude to him about it because of the rory of it all, but he doesn't lose his temper or anything. and the only other scene with them that i can think of is when he's renting movies and lane calls rory and jess a "really old agoraphobic couple" and again there's nothing negative there?? and lane even calls jess asking her to run away romantic. and he goes to lane's band practice and their show, the only animosity between them ever comes from lane

and then we only ever get two scenes with paris and one they don't really interact, he's just playing off of her assumptions that luke keeps girls behind the curtain and turns the whole thing into a joke to annoy luke. and then their second interaction is one of my favorite scenes in the entire show when he brings rory food and he and paris end up in a debate about literature. he is the only one of rory's boyfriends who could match paris wit for wit. dean never tried and would have never been able to and paris hated logan

and i guess you could throw lorelai in as one of rory's friends that he was rude to, but he started trying as soon as rory asked him to try. and lbr lorelai waaaaaay overreacted in the porch scene when jess comes over for dinner. yeah, he was rude and inappropriate, but he was also a traumatized 17 year old who had someone he didn't even know yet's mother talking to him like she knew him. and yeah, lorelai had it rough and ran from the gilmore's for a reason, but her situation was so vastly different from jess's. and again, rory asked, so he started putting in an effort with her, but there was always going to be tension because of that initial interaction and lorelai assuming that she knew everything about jess just because she's known bad boys in the past and she knows what it's like to have a chip on your shoulder

people love to hate on him for things they made up in their own heads

there are valid reasons to not like (teenage) jess, but none of those should include his treatment of her friends. especially considering none of her other boyfriends made any level of effort with lane or paris

i completely agree but i also don’t get why all the unnecessary hate on zack? like i get that dave and lane should have been endgame but lane did choose zack and when you think about it he was pretty good to her

I can't help but imainge how cool and free and amazing Lane's life could've been if the writers didn't screw it up

i recently watched dawson’s creek for the first time and i loveeeed getting to see joey & pacey get their endgame but smth i noticed during my watch is that as far as i remember he was the only one to not mock her fear?? or he was actually understanding of her fears in general and tried to meet her there rather than degrade her bc honestly her trauma and resistance towards huge changes or the possibility of large changes leading to disaster seemed valid to feel after everything she went through as a kid imo but i feel like eddie and dawson were constantly telling her things like “you’ll always be a scared little girl” and i don’t think pacey ever rlly did that or told her smth like that! (prom is an entirely other story bc that WAS very very bad but it didn’t have to do w her fears but rather his)

i might be going crazy (or reaching) for noticing that parallel but i’d love to know your thoughts on it!!! i’ve read your analyses before and they’re interesting to read 🙂‍↕️🫶🫶

hi!! first of all, thank you!! i appreciate that a lot!! i love running this account so it's always fun to get messages like this!!

secondly, i absolutely, one hundred percent agree with you. one of my favorite things about pacey and joey is how pacey reacts to joey's fears and trauma and how understanding he is towards them. pacey, in general, is an incredibly understanding character, i think he's very empathic and can read people's emotions and understand them very well, and that's definitely on full display in his relationship with joey. pacey has ALWAYS been aware of joey's fears, he's commented on them multiple times, he mentions them in s3, he mentions them in s4, he mentions them in s6, but unlike dawson (and eddie, which i could go on a WHOLE tangent about how much i hate the way people act like eddie was a good love interest but that's a post for another day), he never throws them back in joey's face. if anything, he encourages her to face her fears and of all the people in her life, he's the only one who ever really manages to get her to do that. he KNOWS why she has trust issues and why she's closed off with her emotions, why she avoids creating conflict with him and dawson, why she runs away from her feelings and struggles to communicate them. he understands all this and still loves and respects her.

also dawson calling joey a scared little girl is so crazy when you think about it because he says that when she RIGHTFULLY gets mad at him for lying about having a girlfriend (or at least having some kind of romantic entanglement) and sleeping with her. like no dawson, she's not being scared, she's just finally realizing you aren't worth it anymore ajfkldasf.

So I'm thinking right now of an issue that often came up on the Gilmore Girls subreddit, and that I often heard from L/L fans who intensely disliked Jess, which is that Jess was presumptuous to tell Rory in S6 that he "knew her better than anyone", that he only idealized the Rory he knew from high school, that he didn't know or understand her current circumstances at all, that he had no right to encourage her to go back to Yale, and that only Logan really understood the real Rory and knew what was best for her, because (and this is my absolute favorite part of the argument) "Rory likes having nice things and spending money."

I mean, objectively, some of these things are true, because she's spent the last year with Logan and Jess hasn't had much contact with her since high school. And yet...is she happy? Does she want to stay where she is? Is her relationship with Logan doing her much good? Is he doing much of anything to help her claw herself out of that hole? Is he encouraging her to go back to Yale? Is he giving her the push that she needs to fix her life?

And really...can Rory's personality be boiled down to someone who likes to spend money? Because in S6 as in the AYITL era, it seems more of a cushion that keeps her from moving on than anything that's really improving her life, and she only is able to move on when she embraces her roots and returns home to her mom, to Star Hollow, to furthering her goals, even if she doesn't plan to stay home permanently.

ASP writes Logan as part of a toxic cycle, yearning for independence but unable to let go of the advantages he'll have to give up if he leaves. This seems to be a settled reality in AYITL: he can't leave, and she doesn't want to stay in his world, because she'd have to give up too much to live there. Her life is outside of there, and Jess is always an implied part of that future. Logan can't help her claw herself out of that hole because he can't find a way out of it himself.

(Let it be known that S7 does not follow this blueprint and I think Logan can be better than that, but that wasn't in the original game plan).

And Jess? Well, he already did claw himself out of a life he didn't want. So he does know Rory better because he knows why she isn't happy, and he is the right person to inspire her to change her life.

So don't be mad at my boy. He was right!
