this may sound funny, but the vinland saga has really changed my brain chemistry. in everyday situations, when emotions take over, i tell myself "i have no enemies" and the day gets better. plus every time i'm in a nice place, i tell myself "oh vinland". and that's just the way it is.

maturing is realizing that Jean's beef with Eren is totally understandable, especially at their age. like what do you mean youve finally met with the baddest baddie in your batch, wanting to shoot your shot with her only to find out that she's not interested in you. only to find out that the boy the baddest bitch is interested in treats her like a total douchebag, has anger issues, and (at that time) questionably has titan power ????

Most people know Levi doesn’t sleep much—two, maybe three hours at most.

In the Underground, sleep was a risk. You don't rest too deeply unless you’re willing to not wake up. That survival instinct never left him. And when he joined the Survey Corps, rest became a luxury you couldn’t afford. Sleep got people killed.

The nightmares started the day his mother died, and they only got worse. Every loss, every failure, every blood-soaked memory added weight to a mind already carrying too much.

Peace doesn’t heal everything. It doesn’t erase the screams of dying comrades, the sound of blades breaking, the feel of blood soaking through his clothes. It doesn’t touch the guilt of surviving when everybody he loved are dead.

Kushel. Kenny. Isabel. Furlan. Petra. Oluo. Erwin. Hange. All of them. Again and again.

Some nights, he doesn’t even try. Just sits in the dark, drinking black tea gone cold, staring at the wall like it’s trying to tell him something. Other nights, Levi sleeps for a while—only to bolt upright, drenched in sweat, heart pounding like he’s still on a battlefield.

He never talks about it. If you ask, he just says, "I'm fine." But you see it anyway: the untouched side of the bed, the laundry folded at 3 am, all the paperwork is done, the way he flinches when you touch his shoulder too suddenly in the dark.

Your presence brings some comfort. Maybe it softens the edges of his silence. Maybe it reminds him that he’s not completely alone. But the nightmares don’t stop.

They’ve been with Levi for most of his life. And no matter how much light you bring into the room, some shadows just don’t leave.

Perhaps one night, after another nightmare, he won't hold back and will cry in front of you for the first time because he is tired of everything, of the memories, of the nightmares, but you will not discuss it ever again, as if it never happened.

i also really like the way vinland saga depicted slavery. there's a frankly disturbing amount of anime out there (especially isekai ones) that tend to depict slavery as something awful, yes, but only if you're a bad person. like... what if you were to become a slave master but you were really niceys to your slaves? 🥺 and they all liked you?? 🥺🥺🥺 then surely that would be okay, because YOU wouldn't be cruel, right???

it almost looked like vinland was going that route with ketil at the start of the farmland saga, since he was, comparatively, one of the 'better' slave owners, but they completely destroy that notion by the end of it, especially highlighting the difference in treatment between male and female slaves through arnheid. there's just no dancing around it: slavery is always an inhumane practice, regardless of the personal morality of the slave owner in question
