Canucksblr’s “most Canuckian experience” bracket — Round 2, Poll 2
Tumblr media
with a win in the second round, demko’s popliteus injury will be moving onto Round 3! the second poll of Round 2, with context below as always, is:
the context:
in a game that would cause the canucks to be eliminated if they didn’t at least get one point, they immediately went down 3-0. they brought it back to 3-2!! but then went down 5-2, with a minute left in the game. it was over. the team was incredibly short-staffed and had fought valiantly, but there was no no way, right? then, in one minute, the canucks scored 3 goals to tie the game. they went to OT, where defenceman filip hronek won the opening faceoff, and the canucks won. this was the first time in NHL history that a team came back from being down 3 goals in the final minute, and won the game. (the next day, they were eliminated after minnesota won a game against the sharks).
elias pettersson, a forward who wears #40 for the canucks, has been on the team since his rookie season in 2018-2019. in 2022, the team drafted elias pettersson (yes, really), a defenceman. he was picked in the third round and this is his first year playing in north america, so he really wasn’t expected to make the NHL team at all. he did, though, and even made carson soucy expendable, which meant we had two elias petterssons playing on the team! then, using assets from the jt miller trade, the canucks acquired marcus pettersson, another defenceman. we now had 3 petterssons, pettersson cubed if you will. it led to this iconic moment in the play-by-play:

NHL empty-net goals may feel ‘sleazy,’ but they count all the same
Brock Boeser was hemming and hawing. The question posed to him was simple: When there’s an empty net at the other end of the ice, should you shoot for it the moment the puck touches your stick, no matter how deep you are in your own end?
“It depends on the situation,” the Vancouver Canucks right wing said. “Say your team’s up by two goals instead of one, then you might as well let it fly.”
At this point, a few minutes into the conversation, Boeser’s lockermate, Elias Pettersson, had heard enough.
“You let it fly every time!” Pettersson, a Canucks center, loudly interjected while laughing.
“No, not last time,” Boeser snootily corrected before returning to his questioner. “He’s a little upset with me on a couple of them.”
The follow-up is a little more complex. Has hockey protocol changed in recent years? Is it no longer gauche to fire 170-foot wrist shots at a yawning cage? Have NHL teams decided it’s worth risking an icing infraction to have a chance at the goal? Should Boeser have thrown his guy Pettersson a bone?
“I don’t know,” Boeser said before dramatically turning and offering Pettersson a hard stare worthy of Paddington Bear. “I’m just focused on winning.”
“If we practiced it, we would pretty much make it every time,” Pettersson said. “In games, you have that moment to think, it’s like, ‘Oh, s—.’”
“There’s more pressure that way, yeah,” Boeser chimed in. “Once you think about it, there’s a little pressure. And if you get a couple stickhandles in, you’re definitely thinking about it. If the puck’s wobbling or bouncing, you’re like, ‘Don’t mess this up.’ It can be easier to just let it fly.”

imagine being a hockey fan and your team didn’t make the playoffs and two of your best players hated each other so much that one got traded and your management seems to hate the other and they won’t keep their mouths shut and make everything worse anytime they speak to the media and you don’t know if your captain is gonna re-sign in 2 years and your head coach QUIT and your longest-tenured player is gonna go to free agency and your biggest rival WON’T LOSE OH MY GOD

Canucksblr’s “most Canuckian experience” bracket — Round 2, Poll 1
Tumblr media
welcome to Round 2 of the tournament! the results of the final poll of the first round can be found here.
the first matchup of Round 2, with context below as always for anyone who’d like it, is:
the context:
demko, our beloved goalie, was injured in march 2024. he came back for the end of the season, but was injured again in game 1 of the playoffs. then we found out he would not be ready for the start of training camp (he ended up not playing until december 2024). the reason? he had a torn popliteus, and by demko’s own admission, he was the first NHL player to ever have this injury (making it difficult to work out a recovery plan). not goalie, player. they could only find a few other professional athletes at all who had experienced this. what a trendsetter, thatcher…
hopes were high coming into this season. in the season opener, the canucks built themselves a 4-1 lead against the calgary flames and looked like they were picking up right where they’d left off. then, they simply collapsed. calgary scored 4 unanswered goals, to go up 5-4. the canucks did tie it up after pulling the goalie (they had to pull their goalie in a game they had a 4-1 lead in 😭), but went on to lose in overtime (the first of many OTLs). we thought the season would surely get better — it did not.
