âthatâs the best part! i make a rule to learn at least three new things about a person every time i see them, but iâm also kind of annoying and nosey, so there is that,â hwan laughed sweetly, shrugging his shoulders easily,Â
hwan rested his chin in his hands, lightly tapping his fingers against his cheek as he looked at the other with a smile. at the comment about being a romantic, he nodded his head, showing teeth as he smiled brightly at that. he was. the idea of romance was the best and the feeling of it, while he never felt it personally, he felt it when he held his mothersâ hands. they felt it when they looked at each other. they always thought it was cute that his eyes turned pink.
âhmm, a walk in the park? holding hands and enjoying the rest of their day,â hwan commented, thinking about it for a moment, âsomething cute and also a bit romantic.â
Haneul thought about it for a quiet moment, âI donât think we wouldâve been this friendly if you hadnât tried to get to know me that well. So I guess I donât find it annoying or nosey.âÂ
He stretched his legs out, then crossed them under the table. âA walk in the park sounds pretty relaxing. Do people typically hold hands on the first date?â Haneul had no issue with holding Hwanâs hand, but it was a little nerve-wracking to think that he might have to initiate skin-to-skin contact with a strangerÂ
He got up, taking their cups and depositing them on the counter of the coffee counter to be washed. âAlright, letâs go take a walk, shall we?â He pushed his long sleeves so that they folded above his hand and at wrist, and held out his hand to the other.Â

âthatâs how it works,â hwan nodded, smiling as always. he thought the building up was the fun part. getting to know what the person likes and dislikes, their life up till that point and all the little quirks and things. hell, hwan liked learning all that from anyone.
it was funny talking about this. not in a âha haâ type of way, but more of a âinterestingâ sort of way. they were on a âdateâ to help haneul get used to the idea of dating and this entire time, he was trying to explain how it all worked, despite having little to no experience. but emotions was his bread and butter. if he didnât know what to do, it would be a little surprising.
hwan laughed, his hand moving to cover his mouth, âi think the complicated stuff is the most interesting, but iâm strange.â
Haneul exhaled deeply, almost in a sigh. âI suppose it would be really interesting to learn all that about a stranger... It sounds fun?â He placed his elbows on the table and leaned forwards, stretching slightly.Â
âThe complicated stuff would probably be worth it, if youâd found the right person.â Though heâs never felt that way, Haneul couldnât help but feel a yearning to feel that sort of way. He sort of understood why people were so hung up on the idea of finding âthe oneâ. âYouâre just a romantic, nothing very strange about that.âÂ
He leaned backwards again, âSo now what? Where else do dates typically take people?âÂ

âAs for meâŚ.â He laughed. âIâm literally the least dangerous person here. The only weapon I have is like a sword or daggers sometimes. But thatâs only at night.â Nate held back a little bit of a pout. His powers werenât as cool as everyone elseâs. When heâd figures out he had been transformed into a mutant heâd been thrilled. Heâd watched so many movies about mutants and now he was one. It didnât exactly meet his expectations.Â
âWait,â Nate whipped to face Haneul. âYouâre leaving!!â He couldnât believe this. His one friend he had made since he got here and he wouldnât be staying.Â
Haneul hummed, âItâs probably better to be more careful anyways, especially when dealing with your own well-being.â He shrugged, âThe trainingâs probably just to make sure we know how to control our abilities, make sure people donât accidentally destroy the facility or hurt each other.â Practice makes perfect, or so he had heard. It made sense.Â
He bit back a laugh at the thought of him potentially being dangerous. He did claw some guyâs eyes out, or at least he was pretty sure that was what happened. But he doubted he would ever want to be in a situation where he had to do something like that again. Instead, he smiles a little, âFrom what Iâve been told, my bones are really hollow, and my wings are only really built for carrying me around. I think Iâm really light, and thatâs why Iâm able to stay in the air? I donât think carrying anything heavy would work.âÂ
He frowned, âBut creating weapons with light, even if itâs a night, that could be rather dangerous. It could be really useful if there was something that needed to be done at night?â Haneul didnât really want to say anything more, in the case that Nate was really worried about being weaponized. âWorking with moonlight though, that sounds like it would look really pretty.â He smiled shyly, trying to imagine what it would look like.Â
âI would leave if they planned on weaponized us,â Haneul corrected, âHonestly, I donât really have anywhere else to go. I was living with a nice person, but I already owe them a little too much, and I donât really want to go back and bother them by taking up living space again.â He exhaled deeply, âIf this place is just a place where we can live and get an education and learn to control our powers or something, Iâll be here for a long while.âÂ

After waiting a few moments, he finally spoke again, choosing to stuff his hands back in his pockets. âIt was an impulse I guess? Seeing you triggered an oddly specific memory and if I didnât ask or confront you now, I wouldâve spent the whole year staring at you in confusion.â He chuckled a little and shrugged. âSo I figured Iâd make it less awkward and ask butâŚit seems like I still made it weird right?â
To him, it sounded like a shitty and poorly worded excuse, but he didnât know how else he could have phrased it. There was a small part of him that had grown worried, but he ignored it and opted to maintain his normal outward appearance.Â
âIf I somehow brought up any bad memories, Iâm sorry. That wasnât my intention at all.â
Haneul was silent for a long moment. Things were starting to become a little clearer in his panic-addled brain, and he was feeling quite overwhelmed and embarrassed for acting out. He just wanted to hide away in his room for the rest of the day. But it was probably the better choice to suck it up. Thatâs what the good doctor would want him to do, right?Â
So he tugged lightly on a stray string from his sleeve and twirled it around his index finger, partially to give his fingers something to do so they wouldnât shake as much. âItâs fine,â he mumbled, âI overreacted.â It would probably be the best thing to try and put this past them. Besides, Haneul doubted that his past was something most people had to go through. Dohyun couldnât possibly know what his question would trigger.Â
So he tried for a small sheepish smile, âReally, Iâm sorry for snapping earlier. Those werenât the best times for me, so I got a little panicked thinking that I might have to go back.â He frowned a bit, âHow... did you figure out where to go each night? The gambling stuff wasnât always held in the same place every night.â If it was, he would probably have an easier time, with most of the attention being on the games instead of himself.Â

âiâm comfortable with strangers. iâm not really a good judge of any of that,â hwan pointed out with a small shrug. drop hwan in a room with a bunch of strangers and by the end of the day, heâd know every detail about them because that was the type of person he was. he asked questions. he got to know someone.
he hummed in thought, âask them things. favorite color, favorite food, things like that. then ask them tougher questions like was there a toy they always wanted as a child, but their parents wouldnât let them have it or what are three strange items youâd take to a desert island. things to make them think. after that, you go for the personal stuff. talk about their life and their hopes and dreams and stuff like that. makes sense, right?â
hwan nodded his head, smiling. he chuckled, âum, well, for me, it is a little more obvious.â
he pointed at his eyes, reminding the other his feelings could literally show in his eyes. he sighed, humming again, âit seems strange to say that you just know, but i think youâd be able to tell. your mind always drifts back to them. what are they doing? are they happy? did they eat? are they thinking about you? and then when you see them, you canât help but smile and every little thing they do is just amazing.â
the other had a soft look on his face as he thought about it. he never got too close to anyone to ever feel that, but he saw it when he looked at his mothers. he grinned, âyou just know.â
âSo youâd probably work your way up to that, right? Like youâd start with the basic stuff and then go deeper?â Haneul exhaled, tracing random symbols into the wood with his index finger. It sounded like a lot of work, but all friendship probably took work, not to mention a relationship. Those were much more complicated.Â
Haneul stared into his empty cup, eyebrows furrowing just a little, âThat sounds... nice,â he mumbled. He wasnât sure heâd ever feel that way about someone. But maybe he just hadnât met that person yet. Or maybe, was it something he would have to work towards?Â
He paused a long moment, just taking in the smell of coffee beans roasting in the back. âLife is already so complicated without love in the mix,â Haneul stuck his his lower lip out in a small pout, âBut I guess itâs rewarding to be in a relationship?âÂ

âdating really shouldnât be a big thing. the actual date is just the location, but what makes the date is just talking to the other person and making them feel comfortable. you canât tell because i have my contacts in, but my eyes are light blue. iâm very comfortable,â hwan grinned, shrugging his shoulders easily. of course, hwan was usually comfortable, but haneul was still doing a great job.
the other hummed, grabbing his drink again, âyouâd realize this was all a plot to get you to take me on a date.â
hwan paused for a moment before laughing, a little loudly, but he was just a loud person in general, âiâm kidding. really. but i was hoping youâd realize that dating isnât that much different from being someoneâs friend. except after a date or so, youâll actually be kissing the other person and hopefully holding their hand. than the line is drawn.â
Haneul paused, âBut you could just be comfortable because Iâm familiar?â He plays with the empty latte cup on the table, turning it around slowly. âHow⌠do I get a stranger to be comfortable with me?â Maybe the better question was how he could get himself comfortable around a stranger⌠Haneul typically had a tough time opening up to people at all. He didnât quite understand why the girls he had âdatedâ had asked him out in the first place, but they definitely found it difficult to get him to engage in conversation very much. Maybe that was why he had only lasted until the first or second date, not that he minded too much.
He tilted his head, brushing over the joke, âIâd just be⌠making friends with the person Iâm dating⌠essentially?â Haneul didnât quite understand the difference, âSo how do I tell who I want to date and who I want to just be friends with?â He had never gotten the fireworks people kept theoretically talking about, nor did he get whatever tingly feeling that âbutterflies in the stomachâ should entail.

Nate hummed thoughtfully. âIâm not sure I remember what I put down either,â he said. Upon arriving to the school, heâd been told that he hadnât been expected and thus nothing was ready for him. The school was getting a lot of new students in that week and were preparing for orientation so Nate had been rushed through a quick explanation of how the school worked. Heâd had to figure out things himself, including classes. He didnât understand a good portion of classes that were being offered so he circled a bunch of random ones.Â
âYou donât thinkâŚ.â Nate glanced back at the academy. He couldnât see anyone, even just milling around in the gardens. He glanced up into the trees. There were no visible cameras or wires. Nothing to show they were being watched. He ducked his head closer to whisper to Haneul. âYou donât think theyâre trying to turn us into weapons are you? My father used to say that mutations were just another human evolution waiting to be weaponized.âÂ
It was true. His father had never been quiet about how he felt about mutants. He thought they could be dangerous if in the wrong hands and Nate had blindly believed him until he actually became a mutant. All Nate knew about the academy was that some old man in the desert had suggested it to him. He didnât know anyone here. He didnât know what their intentions were. His mother had raised him to be skeptical, he couldnât help it if he didnât trust these people.Â
Well, Haneul supposed they would both get a surprise when it would come time to look at their timetables or schedules, or whatever they called it. Whatever classes he would end up taking, heâs sure he wouldnât mind it too much, even if he ends up falling behind. Heâs just glad the school was taking him in.
Haneul looked around when he saw Nate doing so, unsure of what the otherâs looking for. He frowned at the otherâs question, never having thought of that. âI remember the people who came to my old place talking about the x-men, something like a heroic group? They donât seem as though they would just turn us into weapons. And it doesnât really look that way from what Iâve seen of the school so far.â Maybe he was wrong, and maybe the school did have not-so-noble intentions.
He almost laughed at the thought of someone trying to turn him into a weapon. âI donât think I would make much of a weapon; Iâm a little too breakable for that,â Haneul chuckled. He would probably break most of his bones before doing any real damage to anyone else. âIf they do try and turn us into weapons though, I donât think Iâll be staying very long.â
Haneul tilted his head, âI do remember a lot of weird courses on the catalogue though, stuff like mathematics, and language studies or something. There wasnât anything like teaching us weaponry or anything. It seems normal?â

POWER SERIES â wing manifestation [wÉŞĹ mĂŚnÉŞfÉËsteÉŞĘ(É)n]Â
the ability to manifest wings at oneâs will. perhaps one of the most beautiful mutations in its prime state, wing manifestation is a subpower of angelic physiology and a variation of appendage generation. despite their seraphic appearance, those blessed with this power often see their wings as a curse, due to the excruciating pain that comes with the molting and regrowth processes. if one receives the chance to look upon the bare back of a mutant with this almost ethereal gift, their eyes will often be greeted with a plethora of scars, as their skin must break each time their wings sprout. these near angelic individuals are forced to endure immense suffering each time they use their mutation, and yet they learn to cope with the pain, as the gift of flight is often worth the hellish price they must pay.

jiwon doesnât expect to get an answer like that. it was the first time she heard him speak since she suggested getting out of the black tie event. it made her look at him, brow slightly raised before a grin pulled on her lips. âdying by the hands of a pretty lady? sounds like a nice way out.â she replies before focusing back on her phone as he asked his next question.
âi used to live in the north of seoul, didnât really come down here so i gotta check places.â she mutters, loud enough for him to hear. when sheâs sure of the directions to their destination, she slipped her phone back into her pocket, looking at the boy. âiâm jiwon by the way, or copycat. whatever floats your boat, cutie.â she says, reaching out to wrap her arm around his, before pulling him closer and tugging him along with her towards the barbecue place she chose.
âso, what brings you to this amazing academy?â she asks after a few blocks, looking up at the male, rather curious. she was aware that some people had to personally apply, like her, some were pretty much scouted, so many different variations and stories. she was still careful not to touch any actual skin, because that was the only way she could actually copy his power. so as long as jiwon was careful everything would be fine, even if she didnât know what the male could do. âdid you willingly join?â
âIsnât that the dream,â he mutters, a small smile appearing on his face just momentarily. He looked around. It was dark out which was always a nice thing. But the city wasnât particularly safe at night. Haneul could only hope that he didnât attract too much trouble out in the city.Â
He glanced over as she scrolled down her phone, the phone a glowing light as they stood outside campus. âNice to meet you, Iâm Haneul,â he introduced himself quickly before he was tugged along. He tries his best not to tense up when she looped her arm around his to pull him along the street. It was the second time that week and Haneul could only wonder whether this was a regular thing that regular people did...Â
He frowned at her next question, âTwo people came to my old home and told me about this place. I guess I was scouted by them.â He shrugged, as much as he could anyways, while being pulled along, âI was persuaded to go, but yeah I was willing.â He paused for a bit, âHow about you? Why are you here?âÂ

hwan tried his best not to let his past dictate his life now. it was a hard process from time to time, but he managed to figure out some things to deal with it. his mothers helped more than anything. it was just something he tried not to think about often. it was his life and it made it who he was, so he accepted it and he dealt with it.Â
he leaned forward, resting his elbow on the table and his chin in his hand. he tapped his fingers against his chin, a smile on his lips. the other was sweet. hwan really appreciated haneul saying those things. he ruined the mood and he instantly felt bad, but the other was definitely putting in the effort.
âi donât know what youâre talking about, but youâre pretty good at this so far,â hwan pointed a finger at the other, grinning, âyou seem to know what youâre doing.â
the empath sighed, chuckling, âyou donât have to take me out on dates. this is supposed to help you get comfortable with someone else, not getting me the date, but i like your go-getter attitude. definitely a good thing. this is working a lot better than i thought.â
Haneul blinked, âAm I?â he questioned, âI havenât been doing much date stuff, I donât think.â He canât for the life of him remember what had happened during his past dates. He remembered a cafe date, a movie date, and was it a carnival? But he didnât remember any of the conversations had, nor did he remember the details of those exchanges.Â
He still felt a bit bad. Being the otherâs friend, wasnât it expected that he did something for Hwan? âJust what did you expect when you thought up this test-date scenario?â He straightened and finished the rest of his latte, sighing in content at the taste of coffee in his throat.Â

a frown appears on her lips at his words. i mean, of course the bullies could have been worse. however, in iseulâs idyllic little world, there would be no such things as bullies. she wished day and night that her words would become true. but alas, the world would not bend at the will of iseulâs thoughts only. the idea that the male would ever get bullied hurt her heart, especially when the male seemed harmless enough.Â
jo iseul, being the person she was, filled with the need to be a hero to any that she could, took her own vow at the moment. one the male would probably never even notice. she would protect him, in any circumstance possible. though they had only met for about a total of 15 minutes, iseul was unstoppable.Â
âi actually ditched my group,â she grins sheepishly, at least having the conscious to be a bit embarrassed by her words. the tours were meant to help the students. and here was iseul, ignoring all help given towards her. âwe can be lost together though. perhaps grab a quick bite to eat, i am a bit hungry.âÂ
Haneulâs eyes widen a fraction at her admission, âOhâŚâ he says, a small smile tugging at his lips in response to her grin. âIâm sure youâll figure out where to go in the school after a while.â The tour was a good way to learn about where everything was, but Haneul did think that it was all so overwhelming that he would have trouble actually remembering anything. Heâd just⌠slowly figure things out as the days went by.
âThat doesnât sound too bad,â he says, âI hear they have some good tea in the kitchens, if we can find our ways in there.â He was also a little hungry, and kicked himself internally for blanking out during the part of the tour where their leader had explained how the cafeteria worked. âHow do⌠cafeterias typically work at schools?â he asks, fiddling with some stray strings on his sleeve.

âthank you for saying that. i appreciate it. people try not to pull away from me, but i get why,â hwan assured with a small shrug, smiling softly, âmaybe iâm just a simple romantic or something. i like surprises and when you do something just because the thought randomly popped into your head.â
the empath tilted his head to the side, scrunching his nose, âthatâs sweet though. thank you. it seems funny to try and offer any advice when i have no experience really? iâve gone on two dates in my life and both guys thought i was either easy or psychic, so i have that going for me.â
he laughed anyways, not upset in the slightest. he was just doomed when it came to relationships.
Haneul glanced over at his friend, the otherâs head tilted downwards, so he couldnât tell what Hwan might be thinking. The other sounded a little sad to him, but maybe Haneul was hearing things. The words sounded like they shouldâve come off as sad.Â
He waits a beat, âThereâs nothing wrong with any of that.â It was weird; Haneul sounded defensive, and he wasnât sure why. He didnât quite understand why he felt so strongly about this. Maybe it was because he had spent most of his life with people who were despicable beings, maybe it was because Hwan contrasted so much with them, that he found the other to be so admirable. And it made him both sad and angry that people saw differences like those he and Hwan had, to only be negative.Â
But this was supposed to be something like a date, so Haneul attempted to make his tone lighter, âMaybe youâll find someone for you at the academy. Weâve all got our different... quirks. Iâd argue yours makes life easier for others, not more difficult.âÂ
Sitting in the booth had its perks. Haneul sipped at his drink before putting it back on the table and slumping back against the cushioned seat and resting his head on Hwanâs shoulder next to him. âAnd if it makes you feel any better. Iâll take you out on little dates like this whenever you want.âÂ

He blush, a little ashamed about it all. He knew he was lacking in the education department. His mother had tried to teach him everything but she was a therapist that had a graduate degree so Nate had assumed she knew everything. But afterâŚ.the eventâŚ.and Nate was thrown into the real world, it felt like he had been thrown into Back to the Future. He was much further behind than he thought.Â
âI mean, I think Iâll be okay but who knows at this point.â He shrugged.Â
Haneul smiled, âIâm not really sure what school supposed to be like either. The people who came by to offer me a spot here didnât really explain how the learning was going to go.â He hoped everything would go okay. He hadnât really thought about the school aspect of everything yet, just worried about his ability and interacting with others. The whole schooling part and education was another can of worms.Â
He shook his head, âIâm sure youâll be okay. I think the teachers would be understanding that people attending the school come from a variety of different backgrounds. The staff seem nice so far anyways.â Haneul ran his fingertips along the rough bark of a nearby tree trunk.
âI donât even remember the courses that I selected.â He hadnât paid a lot of attention to any of that just skimming the catalogue and choosing things at random. Maybe he should have put in more thought then. âHopefully weâll both be okay. I can see them focusing more on training though.â Haneul had heard about the dread of homework and tests, but he had never had to face those sorts of things. He wondered how he would take to learning in class and studying. Those were completely new concepts to him.Â

âMy main concern back then was always the game and the money I could win from the game. I never had, and will never have, any interest in who actually ran those events.âÂ
He would be lying if he said he didnât feel at least slightly offended by the insinuation, but he should have expected that correlation. Logically it was the most sound explanation as to why he had attended the event, so be bit back whatever other remark he wanted to make. It wouldnât be beneficial for him to ruin the situation even further.Â
The step backwards opened up a bit of space, and gave Haneul just a little more breathing room. Technically what Dohyun was saying made sense. Dohyunâs ability would give him an unfair advantage in gambling. It would make sense if the other had frequented gambling spots to get easy money. He wasnât quite convinced yet though, still in a bit of a panic.Â
But Dohyun was a mutant. And it wouldnât make sense for him to be at the academy unless he was actually who he said he was. If he was in the gang and liked it there, then his ability would let him climb to the top ridiculously quickly, and once someone had that sort of power, why would they ever leave? Haneul wished he had some sort of mind-reading or truth seeing power. But for now, all he had was his muddled brain trying to make sense of this.Â
âS-so you were there to make money, and then afterwards you left and... went home..?â Haneulâs fingernails dug into his palms hard inside his pockets, the pain just sharp enough to bring his mind into focus and stop himself from sprinting back into the school and into his room. Not that that would help. Heâd have to face Dohyun again sooner or later; the guy was in one of his classes.Â
And it did help that he couldnât for the life of him remember the guyâs face. It would make sense if Dohyun remembered the wings, after all he was the only mutant he knew of in the gang.Â
Haneul had to remind himself to breathe, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself down. He wasnât in immediate danger. When he spoke again, his voice had lost the edge in it, but the exhaustion showed rather obviously. He was exhausted. Any thought about what his life had been back then had typically led to panic and anxiety attacks. The additional fear that he would be dragged back to that place didnât help.Â
Haneul figured he looked pretty haggard about now, but he didnât quite care anymore. If Dohyun had seen him back then, anything he showed him now would be an improvement, better than the blood and bruises and chains from back then. God forbid if the other had actually seen him in his cage...Â
âIâm sorry for snapping at you,â he said, his voice barely a whisper, âbut why confront me about this now?â he asked, shoulders slumping. His gaze lost what little of a glare he had had before. He hated that someone knew that part of him. He had wanted a fresh start. Sure, he was a freak with wings, maybe. But heâd be just a freak with wings. He wouldnât also be that freak who had been... Haneul stopped his thoughts from going back down there, lest he actually break down in front of Dohyun.

âHaneul you say? Well it seems that we both survived our first day here, though I hope we can make the rest of the week.â Of course she was giggling again but this time at her own words just because she hoped it would be true. She was enjoying her conversation with Haneul very much. âUm, thanks for sitting with me actually. Iâm not good around people either really so I get what your feeling.â
She might not understand everything going on in his mind but she likes to think with her soft smile that her words arenât just trying to be relate-able, âI wonder when we will start training⌠or showcasing our powers⌠what are yours?âÂ
Haneul lets out a quiet chuckle, âFriends might be a stretch, more acquaintances? Iâm sure youâll find people you get along with. And tea in the kitchen doesnât sound half bad.âÂ
The rest of the week... Haneul hadnât even thought of the next days ahead. It would be more of the same, meeting new people, interacting and conversing. He had just been trying to get through the first day. It would be a mentally exhausting week, he thought. âI hope we get through the rest of this week as well... I get the feeling Iâll be taking night walks every day of this week.â He flushed, âAh itâs nothing, youâre easy to talk to. Thank you for letting me stay.âÂ
Training was another issue. He had spent his whole life living in shadows, trying to stay out of the spotlight, so much so that attention was something he strived to get away from. He could only hope that training would be done one-on-one and he wouldnât have to ensure the stares of other classmates. âMy... power?â Haneul bit at his lip, âI have wings,â he said quietly, arms clutching his knees just a little closer to his body. âSo I guess I can fly? A bit?â He fought the urge to hide, since she had been so kind to him so far. âWhat about you? What power do you have?
a night stroll.
