Hare | Kaumatua | Mount Eden, Auckland
Mt Eden
What is the first thing that pops into your mind, when you’re on this mountain - this Maunga?
Mauri Ora!
As I stand on the summit of Mt Eden, I gazed instantly at the very beautiful expanse that surrounds all compass points. My immediate thoughts are those of the ancient times. The historic era when Māori occupied the mountain. Their village structures, fortifications, and gardens. Inclusive would be ones admiration, tenacity, skills and knowledge in pre selecting appropriate areas for settlement to protect and care for their people. A time to reflect, to remember, that this in indeed a treasure for all people.
Do you have a special story to tell about this place?
One of the first things for me on reflection for this particular Maunga and - I think it applys to all the Maunga in Akarana (Auckland) - in the Auckland region is this element of sacredness - tapu, of tapu in terms of respect. Tapu in terms of the environment, and we as of today, we actually tread these mountains, up and down, over and out. Providing that the respect is there, and the care for the actual mountain, and that in its sense is really reflecting the using of the word tapu. Tapu is certainly sacrosanct, you know, it’s very very significant, but not tapu in the sense that you don’t go there, otherwise people wouldn’t be allowed to go there, but tapu in the sense of respect. And galvinising this of course, has been the friends of Mount Eden, and that’s all people.
So the mountain belongs to all people, and that’s where the respect for the mountain comes from. I think if we can all come together in which we have done - struggling - now we want to prevent cars from going up there. The preservation of the environment, the preservation of the environment in and around, and the history of course that goes with it, is so very very important. That’s the element I refer to is the respect that each and every one of us, because the best people, or the best way to give that respect of course, is to care for it, and to look after it, for the future generations.
Kia ora.

Salina, Arian & Alia | Family | India / New Zealand
Mt Eden
What brings you here, to this mountain top?
Alia: I just wanted to bring my mother here, it’s so beautiful, the view and we also wanted to show Arian the view, he has been here before, but he was much younger. I think this time it actually made sense to him.
Salina: I came here four years ago, but it was a bit cloudy.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind, when you’re here on this mountain?
Salina: Serene and calm. I would say, it was like a reawakening of appreciation.
Does this volcano have a special significance to you?
Alia: Yes, I think it is similar to what Mum said. For us , being in New Zealand and Auckland, it is like a reawakening as well living here in Auckland. Coming from India, you don’t appreciate the natural beauty so much. Down there in Auckland it’s so busy when you are working, but you come up here, and it just sort of calms you down.
It sort of sounds like your escaping?
Alia: Well yes. It’s not as though it‘s bad down there, especially compared to the rest of the world. Easy life in New Zealand. Yeah, I think it’s just a getaway, my husband and I have always been coming here at least once a year for the past 6 or 7 years, I guess that is why it is of special significance to me.
Describe the first 3 things you see.
Salina: Well I know that Auckland is surrounded by volcanoes. My Grandson has been learning about Rangitoto, and the environment, through his school, and so coming up here is a way of connecting him to the volcano. It‘s rather nice and seeing that crater is just amazing. It looks so tempting, and at the same time there‘s that sign that says: ‘Don’t go down there‘. I guess there‘s a reason, they have that sign there. And the grass, it‘s just so green. It‘s like a big carpet, it’s so lush.
Alia: The first thing I notice is definitely the Skytower, One Tree Hill and Rangitoto. But probably One Tree Hill, because when you look at it, it is just so powerful, it’s like a symbol there.

What brings you here, to this mountain top?
Just felt like getting away and having a look at the view.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind, when you got up here?
How much it looked like Scotland.
Because of the rain?
Yes, the rain.
Do you have a special story to tell about this place?
Well, I’m not sure, but I believe this is the place where Hone Heke, was it? Cut down the flag pole?
No, that was up North. I actually meant a special story, that you have to tell about a time you have had here.
I have, actually, just recently my friend and I tried to do a little test of our stamina - we ran up here, the whole way. Well, we didn’t run the entire way, we had to take a few stops. It was definitely worth it. When we got here , the sun was just going down, so we just sat and looked at the sunset.
Do you have a special connection to this place?
Yeah, I guess so, I‘ve been up here a few times, and had a deep and meaningful conversation up here, so I suppose I kind of connect it with that in some way.
Contemplative?
Yeah, it’s just that state of mind, and it’s the right place to have that kind of conversation, I mean its picturesque, it’s like a movie.

James | Newcomer | Royal Oak / Wisconsin, USA
One Tree Hill
So what brings you here, to this mountain top?
Well actually I live in Royal Oak, I have just recently moved here and the other day I looked around a little bit in the park and my roommate wanted me to take the dog for a walk today so me and Ruffles here are on an adventure. As I started to get into Cornwall park, I noticed the mountain top and thought for sure I need to go up there and see what’s going on up there. Yeah it’s beautiful.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you got up here?
Well that’s a phenomenal question, I guess I really like different landscapes so just the incredible landscape and it’s so peaceful here. A lot of emotions and good feelings, you know, I felt really connected to the city, I haven’t explored that much, I have only been here for a month and it’s like a hidden gem here. You can have a better view of everything that this city has to offer I guess.
What are the first three things that stand out at you the most?
I know the Skytower, but that’s really the only thing that I know. I like more of the ridgelines that you’re getting from the mountains and the water. The smaller communities.
I’ve always been fascinated with mountains. I live in Wisconsin so we don’t have a lot of mountains. We have a lot of cattle’s and marines, so to come up here and see all of those mountains is just breath taking.
You know, when I first heard of New Zealand, it was like a place that didn’t exist. So to be here is like a dream. You don’t get the hustle and bustle of the city, everybody’s moving, the concrete and the noise, but you get the greenscape and the insight of the city.
Back home you would see a fence and think 'oh no, you don’t go in there‘ but here you can go and explore that. You want to preserve these areas, but you also want access to it.

One Tree Hill
What brings you here, to this mountain top?
Well my housemate, she just works down the road so usually when I drop her off to work, I’ll come and bring him for a walk. Yeah.
What’s his name?
Izen.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you are here?
The first thing, I guess it’s kinda weird, but I used to come here a lot when I was a teenager with my best friend. She’s actually my house mate who I live with now so it brings back memories like hanging out with her all the time.
Do you have a special story to tell about this place?
I guess nothing that really stands out, nothing positive at least. We had another dog, but she’s getting a bit older and it’s hard to take her out, even put her in the car really. Once we brought her here and a lady called her a mutt because she was walking past her dog. It’s kinda funny now like we look back on it but because she’s a Samoyed dog, the white fluffy type, and usually everyone calls her beautiful and that was the first time we had someone who was like wow!
Did that person have a dog too?
Yeah.
So was it a dog fight?
Well it wasn’t even a dog fight between the two dogs it was just that she was trying to sniff the other dog and maybe because she is quite big it could be quite intimidating.
What are the first three things that stand out for you when you look out from this mountain?
The Skytower, Rangitoto Island is one as well and this general direction (West Auckland) because that is where I am from.

Pierre & Bill | Colleagues | Canada / New Zealand
One Tree Hill
What brings you here, on this mountain top?
Pierre: We had some free time between work days.
Bill: So Pierre’s here for training, he’s training our technical people, he’s been flown from Canada to here for work.
Pierre: I’m free this weekend so we do a little bit of tourism.
You must be from this French part of Canada.
Pierre: Yes, of course. I‘m from Québec.
What is the first thought that pops into your mind when you come up here?
Bill: It’s not a very nice day.
Pierre: I wanted to see the one tree that’s supposed to be here. So I miss the tree.
That‘s long gone.
Pierre: When did that happen?
Bill: Oh, how long ago was that? Ten years?
Yes, ten years.
Do you have a special connection to this place?
Bill: It’s where I live, in Auckland. I come here for the view.
What are the first three things that you see when you look out onto the horizon?
Pierre: Different trees, the ocean and I was impressed by that volcano there (points to Rangitoto).
Bill: I guess just the vastness of Auckland, you can see how big Auckland is from here.

My mother brought me here.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind, when you got up here?
The great view, the history.
Do you know some of the history of this area?

A Maori man cut down one of the trees, that was up here, and also that a white man had cut down a native tree, that was sacred to the Maori.
Do you have a special connection to this place?
I’m not really sure. Yeah, I‘ve been here a few times.
Do you have a special story to tell about this place?
I remember, one day when I was a little kid, there was a fair here.
By the café?
Yes, we played rolly polly down that big hill. Another time, I remember was playing inside that big burnt tree.

Petra & Seline | Tourists | Italy / Switzerland
Mt Eden
What brings you here, to this mountain top?
Seline: A friend of ours said we had to come and have a look.
Petra: Yes, a friend told us. It’s a great view over Auckland.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind, when you got up here?
Petra: I thought it was amazing to see how large Auckland is. You are in town and there are all the little houses, that is one of the great things about Auckland. And when you are downtown, you have a small area of large structures - high structures - but then you go out, then you have a lot of mostly smaller houses. You don’t realise how big Auckland is.
Describe the first three things that you see when you look out at the view?
Seline: The harbour.
Petra: I saw the other hills.
Seline: Yeah, for me it was the sea. Yeah, cause it’s around you - you see it all the time. And the harbour as well.
Petra: We were talking about that island (gestures towards Rangiototo).
That’s Rangitoto. that’s our most recent volcano, that erupted about 650 years ago.
Petra: Oh, ok.

What brings you here, to this mountain top?
I just think it’s a good view. I just like getting out of the house and having a look around.
What is the first thing that popped into your mind when you got here?
I was counting how many people are here. Yeah, seeing how people have time to do this.
Do you have any special connections with this place?
Yeah, actually I come here more often.
Do you?
Yeah, I used to come here last year during my studies. It was a good place to relieve stress. Yeah, it was a place to - you know - take some time out. Time alone.
What are the first three things that you see when you look out to the horizon?
Can I say trees?
Yes.
Yeah, ok, trees, a hill, a mountain, mauga (Samoan for mountain) and the buildings.

What brings you here to this mountain top?
To see the hole in the volcano like in the movies and books that I read at school.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind when we are here standing on an actual volcano?
Lava and Water. I imagine the volcanoes erupting and people running out of their houses to get away from the hot lava and ashes.
What are the first three things that you see when you are standing here?
I can see a lot of water over there in the distance and fog crowding over all of the buildings.

Mt Roskill
What brings you here to this mountain top?
The experience, I have never been on Mt Roskill before.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind, when you are here on this mountain?
The height and the coolness of the climate today.
Does this volcano have any special significance to you?
I am not a fan of volcanoes because they’re so high and somewhat intimidating but standing up here with these views, it makes you feel like a bigger person, a better person. The world seems like it is at a still when you’re up on a mountain looking down at the atmosphere.
