like compare and contrast johnsons snarky looserism to poor sydney sweeney whose script gave her no room to play it anything but completely straight. "hope the spiders were worth it mom" has got nothing on "cassie [long pause] can i trust you?"
also im now getting hung up on what could've been because the premise is kinda good. 30 smth yo woman who is aimless and a little bit resentful but nevertheless has a savior complex gets burdened with not one not two but three whole teenage girls who run the risk of turning out just as aimless if not a whole lot more resentful. her only superpower is getting to experience reality as a jumbled incoherent mess of random stuff. its not subtle but when is it ever.
its a good start because you can play it funny you can play it serious you can play it interesting even but then sony did kinda nothing with it and went with the very bare minimum. bummer!

madame webb (2024) is categorically a bad movie (though liked the cinematography....) but i also didn't hate it at all i actually had a great time and you'd be surprised how much that is thanks to dakota johnsons carefully deployed bad delivery. it captures 2003 really well somehow if it had come out then it would have been one of those formative movie for lots of people i think. i didn't know there were so many spider ladies

people are doing the "ooh who woulda thought dora the explorer would one day turn out to be a badass superhero who looks awesome" joke as if the dora movie didnt already perfectly showcase all of isabela merceds skill with the scene where she convincingly shovels a hole for pooping in while dancing to the beat of a song about poo shes also lip-synching and the whole time she doesnt look anything less than perfectly charming
#im serious thats a “wow shes gonna go places” moment#i dont mean 'charming' as in 'looking pretty while half-assing a a digging motion' but as in 'she made the scene hers'#you have to see it for yourself. the commitment to the shoveling the sliiight weight she puts behind it to make it look just about credible#while still feeling choreographed and effortless. because doras trying to be uplifting here but has also dug countless other poo holes#like youve already stopped feeling like dora is making a fool out of herself by that point in the movie because shes been so competent.#but if there was a scene that could undo that it would be this one and it does not. dora digs a shitter and you think 'oh work'
