The song tells of a story of a long-distance relationship or even a relationship that has ended with the other person leaving. The places that star in the song perfectly reflects the "place" the two lovers are in. The Narrator is in Los Angeles, and "You" left for New York.

The Narrator tells how You is in New York with its busy streets and chaotic scenery. Los Angeles on the other hand is the opposite, with the streets perfect for people with cars. While You switched the car for walking and taxis when You moved to NY.

But despite of the laid back description of LA in the song, the Narrator contrasts the so-called City of Angels with how the Narrator has demons staying faithful in the City of Angels.

The title of the song itself is a witty play on the saying that goes something like "lost in la la land". La la land is a term used to call LA, and it also means "being out of touch with reality". So the song is a callback to the phrase and also basically means "LA lost you"— (LA LA lost you, LA lost you) since "You" moved to New York from Los Angeles.

This goes back to how the two places also symbolize both persons. LA being the Narrator, and NY as "You".
