I got diagnosed with ASD a little over a week ago and am waiting for my report to come in the post. That report should tell me what they think might be able to help me cope with the diagnosis. It’s great getting a diagnosis as I can tell people I have ASD and that my brain is quite different to there’s
My dad has been the most difficult to deliver it to. While he helped me get the appointments I needed, he thought I was just ‘being lazy’ when my flat wasn’t tidy. He told me to stop ‘using’ autism as an excuse not to do things. I told him countless times that I didn’t have the motivation to do certain things but will have the motivation to clean the kitchen/ flat one day every so often if he stopped telling me ‘need/want/have to’
My mum knew I had ASD as I was getting tested for epilepsy but apparently the testing for that got stopped, and she didn’t tell me at all. I only found out that I was thought to have mild Aspergers from my half brother as I was waiting for my CBT.
Both my parents are in their 50’s and are separated (never married). My birth wasn’t great either as I was starved of oxygen for 2 days before birth (which was an emergency c-section) and weight 1lb 13 1/2 oz and was very tiny. My knee I would have some difficulties growing up and throughout life, yet I was never tested earlier. I was never given help in school, I was hardly understood by some of the teachers.
School was a massive headache for me as I always lost focus of the subject at hand. I remember in history the class was learning about WW1 but I was more intrigued by the Titanic. I ended up being very good at maths and was getting A’s and A*’s during the test papers, but ended up not even getting a C.
I loved school but the classes were a bore for me and I had to learn at everyone else’s pace. I was never given 1:1 help unless I was falling behind (but that was given to everyone that needed it). The teachers never came over to me and asked how I was doing with the work. Just one look at my books and walked away, not knowing if I was actually learning anything.
I think I’ve ranted for a good bit so I’ll end it here and post more about stuff like my upbringing and schooling etc at a later date!
