I think one of the fundamental horror elements of jon and martin's relationship (that is super underutilized in fanworks imo) is that when they say "where you go, I go," they really mean it. by the time they're striding across that hellscape, and tbh even earlier than that, there is no duplicity or slight or monstrous act either of them could do that the other wouldn't forgive so they could stay together. personal insults, lashing out, working with the enemy, attacking strangers, direct violence, deliberately endangering each other, murder, encouraging murder, total and complete betrayals of trust, they've done it all and reconciled afterwards. sometimes they talk it out and resolve it in a reasonable way, and sometimes they're just like "hmm. fucked up!" or ("hmm. kinda cute when he does it <3") and never mention it again.
it's not just about letting anything slide with each other, either, it's bigger than that. martin will make the decision on a personal level that he could never live with surviving off of innocent people's suffering, but if doing that on a cosmic scale is the way to keep jon with him then he will sacrifice all his principles and do it. jon is hell bent on quarantining the fears by literally murdering the planet as quickly and efficiently as possible, but the second this means martin potentially dying in front of him he changes his mind. when jon says that their love for each other is "the real core of it," he's not just declaring affection after a fight, he is stating the cause for the incomprehensible tragedy that they're about to enact. it's less "the love was there, it didn't change anything" and more "the love was there, it doomed us all." it isn't even a question, they will wrap their soulmate-red binding string around the necks of everyone in the entire cosmos before they sever it.

Thinking about the kinda blurry lines between Simon Petrikov and the Ice King’s identities again. Because I feel like the Winter King really is a fascinating case study of just how complex the situation can be.
Because the Winter King is a Simon/Ice King who found a way to get rid of the Madness and Sadness of the Crown by forcing it into someone else while keeping all the Magic to himself. And by doing so he regained some sense of his old Simon Petrikov identity - but at the same time he became an irrevocably different person.
Because the Madness and Sadness of the Magic Crown don’t work, like, totally separate from Simon’s brain, I think. Like, the whispers of the secrets of the ice and snow are probably entirely from the Crown. But then there’s the most iconic expression of Ice King’s Madness - the Princess Kidnappings.
Simon might’ve described the Candy Queen as having the Crown’s Madness projected into her. But romantic obsession and kidnappings have been established as a mad reflection of Simon’s psyche ever since the episode that first established Simon's existence.
So it’s not just the Magic Crown’s Madness projected into Peebles. Candy Queen’s behavior is probably not indicative of, like, how PB would act if she put on the Crown herself. It’s specifically Simon Petrikov’s brand of Madness and Sadness that has been shoved into her head.
And losing Betty will always make Simon very Sad and maybe a little bit Mad, the thing the Crown did was exaggerate and twist these emotions until he’s kidnapping sapient blobs of slime in hope they’ll marry him. You can’t fully separate Ice King’s mad obsession with princesses from Simon’s love for Betty. So it’s no wonder that when the Winter King artificially rid himself of one, he also lost the other.
And in general, so much of Ice King's Madness and Sadness was fueled by Simon's loves and his regrets - and so when they are truly wiped away, we are left with a very happy and very sane Simon who is utterly callous, cruel and selfish. One who has lost so much of what made him Simon Petrikov in the first place, maybe even more than he ever did as Ice King.
The Magic Crown drove Simon crazy, that’s true. But the particular way he turned crazy was based on his specific psyche and personality. And so Ice King always had that little hint of Simon hidden in him and now, no matter how ‘normal’ and ‘sane’ he is - Simon will always have a bit of Ice King in it. And without it… well, he won’t be much of the Simon we know and love.

Something I noticed while rewatching adventure time is that while Marceline refers to herself as 1000 years old, Bubblegum talks about her age pretty differently. For example, in “Too Young” she says she’s 13 now even though she’s still been around for ages.
Any idea why this is?
i think bubblegum is basically counting her age in… equivalents? she apparently refers to herself as being around eighteen or nineteen, even though she’s around 830 years old, and knows it, and does talk about it eventually. i imagine the little bonnie we see in bonnibel bubblegum would have thought of herself as being 12-13, but could have actually been a couple hundred years old.
i wondered why she would count her age that way at all - it’s not like there’s really people in ooo who would think being centuries old is weird? it doesn’t seem like most people live that long, but there’s enough variance in lifespans that there shouldn’t really be anyone around who, like… wouldn’t believe it or something. but i think it’s probably because her mental state doesn’t directly correlate to how old she literally is. they don’t give very much explanation to work with, but we know that her age, mentally, correlates to how much mass she has. making her smaller literally gives her the mind of a 13 year old again, even though she retains her memories and is still also literally over 800 years old, and when she returns to normal she thinks of what happened to her when she was smaller as if it happened years ago.
(this… raises the eternally unanswered question of how she ages????? she specifically says in goliad that she CAN’T live forever. what’s her natural aging process? how does candy… naturally grow? i mean, she could have made more candy biomass for herself to get bigger over time, but i think she might have just… grown up. if you give her a bunch more mass, does she become an old woman? a giant old woman? how the fuck does bonnibel bubblegum WORK??????? i never want an actual straight answer, because wondering is more fun, but….. girl your biology is insane.)
anyway, i think bubblegum basically has to count her age in 2 separate ways, because her chronological age and her mental age aren’t directly tied to each other. she can become, in mind, years younger, and presumably, years older, while still being chronologically centuries old, and i think she considers her approximate mental age to be more useful when interacting with people; “i’m nineteen” gives the impression she wants to give, “i’m 800” gives a different impression.
(meanwhile, marceline, for a long time, partially thinks of herself as not having Grown Up since she was turned into a vampire, but she still puts more focus on being “a thousand years old” than being “a teenager” or whatever. for her this probably is the more useful metric. we know she would have lived for over a thousand years even if she wasn’t a vampire, but she would have still been mortal. being raised by humans, aging like a human for the first 18-ish years of her life… she probably feels centuries a lot differently than bonnie does. this is kind of… “natural” for bonnie, and not so much for marcy. plus, i feel like by the time we meet marceline she’s trying to distance herself a bit from her humanity, and she definitely wants to distance herself from other people.)
oh no this post got fucking long. in summary: bubblegum experiences age in a fairly unique way and the way she chooses to express it is relevant to the way she wants to interact with people - despite the impression she’s unintentionally given her citizens and especially the banana guards of her as some kind of terrifying all-powerful goddess, she generally wants to be seen as Friendly and Approachable, so she focuses less on being hundreds of years old and more on being a teenage girl or a young woman.

as horrifying as "jerry" (the episode) was the idea that bmo regularly hung out with the lich in this universe and rambled endlessly at him and the lich couldn't be bothered to do anything about it because he was so depressed after killing all life on ooo is really fucking funny

Rahhhhh throws crazy old people yuri at you
OK what if Betty just stayed magic? But y’know without any memories of her previous life.
Like instead of running away, or coming from the past thorough a portal, og Betty somehow managed to make in 1000+ years into the future. She can't remember who she is or where she came from, all she knows is that she feels strangely drawn to IK and vice versa. They may not remember the other but they still enjoy each others company.
How she survives the war and vampires I’m not completely sure maybe she was like frozen in ice for a 1000 yrs or somthn lmao
i really like her eccentric style during the date episode, but I'll probably change her design here and there since i made this on the whim.

I started thinking about Adventure Time again and thought of some ideas for some princesses:

1) Circus Princess. She’s a clown but also a ringleader. Her castle is a circus tent. Some of her citizens could be balloon animals.

2) Shark Princess. Lot of teeth. Wears swim trunks. Her top may or may not be an old plastic bag
3) Wax Princess. Made of wax.
4) Sock Princess. A puppet on Ice King’s hand. Sounds like Ice King doing a bad falsetto voice. Ice King goes around convincing everyone that their relationship is getting pretty serious, that they’re really compatible. Absolutely no one believes him, but everyone goes along with it. Eventually Jake gets frustrated and whacks Sock Princess off Ice King’s hand, only to reveal that she has been a real princess the whole time. Everyone feels bad about it. (maybe: Ice King is also surprised. He thought he WAS trying to fool everyone)

5) Pottery Princess. She is made of ceramic and is very shiny. Would make twinkly ceramic sounds when she moves and walks. She can create new pottery people on a wheel. One citizen could be a lumpy finger pot, just a silly little guy.
6) Cowboy Princess and Deputy Cactus. They are girlfriends. Live in the Cowboy Kingdom. Lot of cowboys and cactus people there. I just realized I didn’t finish writing “mohawk” in my drawing

7) Birthday Princess. She is the go-to gal for throwing the ultimate birthday parties. Her hair could be made of streamers? It’s her birthday every day. Finn and Jake bring her gifts every time they visit (this stresses Jake out). Finn and Jake could help her with something, and she gives them a gift as thanks. It’s the same gift Jake got her and she just regifted it.

The implications of the existence of the world where BMO is the only one still alive are:
This universe is the original we saw in Adventure Time, but once Prismo undid the Lich's wish, an exact replica was created for Finn and Jake to live in. And Finn and Jake don't even know
This universe was made to take on the Lich's wish, and got left to rot while Finn and Jake returned home
The original universe is still out there, with no idea what happened to Finn and Jake, and neither universe (the one with just BMO and the one we followed for the last half of the original show) is the original universe.
This is why I love adventure time and its spin offs.

your post about bubblegum reminds me, i find it so interesting that peppermint butler is kind of the same way, but towards her. he's willing to do completely immoral things for her sake (and in general, but like, he prioritizes her in the end over literally everything) despite his similar attitude towards a lot of things (he's pretty unempathetic and thinks himself to be better than other candy people, outright calling them stupid and such, and he's got his own slew of Morally Dubious Actions For The Sake of Morally Dubious Actions).
he kind of causes the issue in "nemesis" since the peace master is really after him, but, he still goes out of his way to take care of that all by himself so she doesn't have to worry even more about all this other stuff. he knows princess bubblegum isn't fond of magic, so he keeps his activities to himself, but still always does what he thinks is right at the expense of others when it comes to making sure she's safe and happy.
i know the comics aren't canon, but they do give a lot of interesting characterization i think, like this arc where he bends over backwards into this huge mess just because he wanted to make sure he could get the highest quality honey for her tea without her finding out about it (since he gets it from the king of ooo, who she hates, and is like trying to form a pyramid scheme over here) and it leads to everyone including her thinking he fucking DIED because he's so insistent about not letting the blackmail about this situation get out, just for her sake. he's SO fucking dedicated to making sure she has what she wants, to the point of lying and sneaking around all the time
sorry i know your post is about bubblegum but aren't they just (puts head in hands) they are honestly .so alike in so many ways and it's so cute . here man take this *hands you unprompted peppermjnt butler analysis
DELICIOUS, FINALLY, SOME PEPPERMINT BUTLER DISCUSSION. I LOVE THIS LITTLE MAN SO MUCH AND NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT HIM
FASCINATING angle that ihad not even thought about before, because i, am one of the people not talking about pepbut even though he’s awesome. This is so interesting!!!!!! Ur right!!!!!!!!!!!
i also love how like… pepbut basically gets special privileges that other candy people don’t. he keeps a lot of secrets from her, but like… the fact that he can actually keep things secret from her in the first place is a huge deal. she doesn’t watch him or try to control him as much as she does with basically every other candy person, she’s fine with him just kinda doing his own thing without her knowing about it… in a way? sometimes if she actually knew what he was doing she’d be upset and want him to stop, but she doesn’t keep a close enough eye on him to know everything hes up to. am i making sense i feel like im not making sense im kinda out of it
But like yeah!!!!!!!!!! I love peppermint butler and i love PB&PB’s relationship. he is Made In Her Image in a way other candy people aren’t. hes a special confidant
