ok so she only got a little bit of screen time but Romelle? from the new season of voltron? she is autistic and nobody shall ever change my mind.

lets start off with her apearance, very loose and flowy clothing, doesnt look constricting at all, now this can easily be a sensory thing for her. also her hair might also be a sensory thing (I myself enjoy having the weight of long hair as a sensory stimulus).

also she doesnt really go with the whole “lotor is our savior” thing all the other alteans had going on, she was suspicous of him from the start. now this can either be her not understanding/conforming to what society expects, which is common in people on the spectrum, or her just being super smart after generations of her people practiccly worshiping a guy and probably providing some sort of education that heavily paints lotor as a good person.

when the lions roar she is the only one who reacts like this, now of course some people might point out that she is the only one who hasnt been exposed to such loud noises in the group, but none the less if she wasnt autistic she probably would have just been startled and maybe plug her ears. not scrunch up and cover her ears entirely while looking like she was lowkey in pain from the sudden loud noise.

I really really really love the idea of all the paladins being neurotypical.

Lance is ADHD and dyslexic. (Percy Jackson is a serious hyperfixation for him). I’m probably going to do a separate post just for Lance because I have ADHD and I want to project on him.

Hunk has anxiety. At some point in season 1 Coran tries to teach everyone ancient Altean meditation techniques for “team bonding”. It was hell for Lance, Keith, and Pidge, but for Hunk it was really helpful. He ended up using it constantly.

Keith and Pidge are both autistic. I don’t know much about autism, so I’m kind of hesitant to make any specific headcanons, but I might make a separate post for them if I learn enough to be comfortable doing that.

Shiro, of course, has PTSD. We all know a lot of his issues from the show. I think he has pretty bad insomnia—in fact, the real reason Coran taught everyone Altean meditation techniques was because Shiro was obviously sleep-deprived and needed help that he refused to ask for. It worked and now Shiro meditates every night.

stoic body language, expressions & speech patterns

taking things literally

a clear focus on facts & numbers

being quiet; no appreciation or understanding for small talk 

a preference for planning stuff

very talented in a specific area of interest (flying)

a savant ability (remembering every single turn their train took without a map; easily multiplying big numbers in her mind; seeing a picture and knowing instantly how many items there are of what; running through countless battle strategies in the blink of an eye) 

We haven’t seen her in a lot of situations outside of her comfort zone or her daily life, so we can’t go through the entire list. Stuff like routine behavior or sensitivity towards sounds/light/texture simply didn’t have a chance to come up yet. But the signs she shows in canon are the textbook definition of an autistic person, it’s how they always get portrayed, so I have no doubt that if anyone were to ask LM or JDS that they’d agree they created her with the autism spectrum in mind.

I drew Liefsdottir from Voltron Legendary Defender. I hope the lighting is okay and I drew her because she is one of my favorite characters in the new season and I love her so much! I also headcanoned her as autistic because she has many of the traits and I think it would be cool for Voltron to have that representation since they seemed to be implying it, and if they were, they did it very well in my opinion, anyway, I just really like her as a character and I hope to see more of her in the next season!

Autistic Pidge and Keith Headcanons

They’ve definitely run into each other in the dark hours of the morning because they were both hyperfocusing on their respective special interests and didn’t realize what time it was

Hand-to-hand combat is is suuuuper stimmy for Keith, because that blunt force is so good on his bones

Pidge is a fully body stimmer. She hops and jumps so much Lance started calling her Bugs Bunny

Inspiration can be frustrating because she starts flapping really hard and she can’t type

Keith went a whole day without eating once bc he got so sick of the food goo and literally could not touch it

Keith pressure stims

Crossing his arms

Pidge clings to him like a monkey when he’s super irritable because she squeezes tight and it makes him so. Calm.

Keith keeps his hair long because he hates air blowing on his neck

Pidge infodumped on Matt all the time when they were kids,

but other children called her a know-it-all and she’d peevishly correct them that there was no way she knew everything

If Keith had a dollar for every “I CAN’T WORDS” moment…

If she thinks someone might be being sarcastic, Pidge just doesn’t say anything in case she’s wrong.

Pidge taught Keith sign language for the times he goes semi-verbal

Matt used to “translate” English into Pidge-speak and vice versa because she and most adults confused each other when she was a kid. (This is something my older sister used to do for me)

Keith has shutdowns more often than meltdowns

Pidge had a meltdown in front of Hunk once and he panicked

Autistic Keith Meta 2.0

I made a meta going into detail about Autistic Keith right after the release of his vlog. Since there has been a lot more content since then that’s come out I feel like it’s about time to do an updated version of this Meta going into even more detail using both more details from previous seasons and new proof that’s come out since the vlog!

Vol-Tron?

This is the most obvious and clear symptom we see in Keith throughout the canon material, missed social cues. The most widely discussed example of this (though its more discussed as an injoke than a reason Keith may be autistic) is “I say Vol, you say Tron.” Keith doesn’t understand the point of this “game”, as he clearly states in his paladin vlog where he gets upset over how difficult it was for him to understand. He also clearly doesn’t understand the rules as he simply says voltron, rather than repeating after Lance. Though it’s clear he wants to understand he simply doesn’t get it and this frustrates him greatly. This also connects to another sign of autism which is needing step by step instructions to guide you through something you may not understand. Keith just wasn’t getting the help he needed to understand the game.

Missed social cues are also shown through Keith’s quiet nature, as well as his struggle to understand sarcasm and dry humor. Examples of this can be seen in the “are you joking?” scene as well as in season 7, episode 1 when James makes a sarcastic remark (“thanks a lot”) and Keith responds in a serious tone. (“My pleasure.”)

It’s also shown that in response to his struggle in situations like this Keith tends to lash out, or have meltdowns. This is shown in his vlog with his angry response and meltdown is also shown in Season 7, Episode 1, when Keith attacks James for his rude comments about Keith’s family. This is also shown several times throughout the entire series when things get hard for Keith and he lashes out in response.

        2. Aversion to touch.

Though as the series goes on Keith is shown handling unexpected hugs better and better, from the beginning of the series we see his aversion to such. He’s shown expressing discomfort to hugs, touch, and even confined spaces (such as the elevator scene with Lance.) In response to this discomfort we can see visible reactions. Backing away, stiffening up, or, like mentioned above, lashing out. This is shown through multiple hugs throughout the show and though in Season 7 he’s shown hugging his mom, Krolia, without hesitation the two have had years to bond and Keith has a trust for her beyond his struggle, starting to understand that hugging is an important part of social interaction with those you love.

      3. Copycat

Keith at the beginning of the show and even occasionally now is shown standing in very stiff, closed off positions. This is how he’s most often seen towards the beginning of the show especially when in a group with the other paladins. This can be attributed to his discomfort in the group, especially in Season 1 when the group aren’t very close together yet. Or, this could be attributed to him not understanding how to stand and act around others, especially due to his long term isolation and the fact that he had not to that point had the opportunity to watch and learn social cues such as posture.

Later on in the show as seasons pass Keith is shown beginning to copy the posture and stance of the other Paladins, this is an attempt to blend in and learn how to act. (Something that is very common with autistic people is an attempt to camouflage in this way.)

     4. Prosopagnosia

Prosopagnosia is facial blindness, or not recognizing facial features. This is very common in autistic people and is actually widely recognized for Keith in the fandom though like many of his autistic traits, it’s used to make fun of him.

This post goes into more detail on Prosopagnosia in Keith than I could do on my own here but his unrecognition of Krolia, despite the similarities in the two of them and her hinting can be attributed to this.

      5. Emotions? Idk her.

Keith often has trouble identifying his emotions and dealing with them, something that many people attribute to him being hot headed and angry. However, it’s more likely the other way around. Keith acts angry and appears hot headed because he doesn’t know how to process his emotions, or identify how he’s feeling. Rather than expressing emotions the way the others do he bottles them up or becomes frustrated with his struggles to understand what’s going on and blows up. This explains his angry expressions, fits of rage, and his so labeled “hot-headedness.”

      6. The Vlog

In Keith’s vlog we see many signs of his autism, this vlog was quite revolutionary for the fandom and the theories of autistic Keith. Though the vlog could be an entire meta on it’s own I didn’t want to go through this one without giving the vlog its own point here.

In the vlog, as mentioned in point one, Keith discusses the “Vol-Tron” joke. As he discusses this he becomes frustrated, shouting about how it’s too complicated and doesn’t need to be so complicated. This is an example of meltdown due to overwhelming social difficulty.

Also shown in the vlog is him explaining away his struggles. This is also common with autistic people who don’t have a diagnosis and are searching for an explanation as to why they struggle and have the symptoms they do. When Keith finds out he’s part galra he wonders if this is why he struggles so much, and uses that to explain everything away.

Also shown in the vlog is Keith stimming. Both with his knife which can be considered an attachment object to him, and by rubbing his fingers together which is a very common stim for many autistic people and was one of the most groundbreaking parts of this vlog as far as the autistic Keith theory goes.
