Daddy and How do I love thee
How do I love thee pg 40
I love you in so many ways, I love you to the moon and back, I think about you when we are apart, through life and heaven, I think of you everyday, I think of you when I’m alone, i love you as freely as i like, i love you in the purest of ways, i love you with a burning passion, through my problems and background, i love you more than i thought i could, i love you as much as i love to breath, through happiness and sadness, i shall love you in the afterlife
Daddy pg 243
When we used to live together, we were complete opposites, I never dared to make a noise,
I have wanted to kill you since I was young, you died before I had the chance,
I kept wishing that you weren’t the person that you were, that i had my old father back,
Similar to the Polish town that was demolished by the Germans during a time of war,
There are a dozen towns demolished by the Germans, I could never tell which town you were involved with,
I could not talk, my jaw was stuck, I thought every German was you,

Iambic Pentameter
MULAN
viscious and feared Huns gruesomely attack home
warriors needed to protect the throne
china needs to recruit mulans father
strong mulan takes over her fathers bother
mulan rigourously trains with the men
the soldiers marched into the huns den
joyous singing comes to an abrupt end
the mountain pass the soldiers must defend
she shoots the snow with a firework
the avalanche kills some of the huns
mulan is injured and discovered
china celebrates with a parade
the huns attack the parade and emperor
mulan saves the emperor

Poetry Response Circle – To His Coy Mistress
Activity 4. Tone and Imagery
Tone: In your group, discuss the following questions.
In lines 1-7, how would you characterize the speaker's tone? For example, is he casual, relaxed, whimsical, worried, hurried?
-he has a relaxed tone, hes trying to be casual
In the second stanza of the poem (lines 21-24), what seems to be the speaker's tone? Anxious? Fearful? Humorous? Realistic? How does the tone in these lines compare to the tone at the poem's beginning? How might the tone in lines 21-24 affect the listening lady?
-his tone changes to anxious, as if to say 'we wont be young forever'
What is the speaker's tone in the final couplet of the second stanza (lines 31-32)? Blackly humorous? Morbid?
-he has accepted the idea of 'until death' but still thinks they should embrace each other before that
What tone does the speaker adopt as he draws his argument to a close (lines 41-46)? If you were the listener, how might you be affected by the tone?
-his tone is committed and soft
Imagery: Marvell mixes positive and negative imagery throughout the poem. In your group, discuss the following questions:
What does Marvell mean by "vegetable love should grow / Vaster than empires" (lines 11-12)?
To what empire does he refer to earlier in the poem?
-his love will keep growing and growing
-he refers to the british empire
The Representative Poetry Online version of the poem footnotes Marvell's earlier references to the British Humber River and the Ganges in India.
What is the imagery Marvell uses in lines 21-24? How do lines 21-22 work to snap the speaker and his lady out of their reverie of having all of the time in the world?
- "times winged chariot"
-before the imagery, the tone is calm, after it becomes more realistic and stressful
Students might first consider the images of "Time's winged chariot" which recalls Apollo, the sun God, and his fiery chariot. The word "winged" suggests speed—the idea that time is running out. The image of the sun itself emphasizes the passage of time, the cycle of the journey from dawn to dusk. In your groups, consider why Marvell might have the winged chariot be at the speaker's back? Might he be trying to suggest that time (death) is inescapable and that time (death) is something that both haunts and hunts us? What does the word "deserts" connote? Death? Infertility?
Lines 25-30: How are the images "worms," "dust," "ashes," and "lust" persuasive warnings to the lady about the transforming power of time and eternity?
-that it is inevitable, time will make her beauty 'burn out'
Lines 33-37: Consider particularly the images: "youthful glue," "morning dew," "willing soul," and "instant fires." How do these images compare to the previous ones in lines 25-30?
-even though their bodies might age, their love wont
Lines 38-40: What is a bird of prey? Give an example. What are birds of prey known for? Why might the speaker compare himself and his lady to birds of prey?
-like an owl, devouer everything at once and savor the moment
Activity 5. Forming a Theme
In your groups, consider the various interpretations of the poem's theme. While students should note the broader themes of time and death, the poet's obvious aim is that of seduction. Reconstruct the overall argument of the syllogism (which they learned about in the first activity). You should move from stanza to stanza, with particular attention to the final stanza of the poem.
As you examine each stanza's building argument, you might note that the syllogism is a bit more complex than the examples provided earlier. Marvell, however, still follows the basic structure. Students might offer an answer akin to the following:
Stanza 1: If we had all the time in the world, we could spend years exploring and developing our love.
-hes trying to persuade the girl to fall in love now because they dont have all the time in the world
Stanza 2: We are mortal, and time will consume us and our passion.
-almost like the first stanza, they are racing against time to commit to eachother. that like a flame withering without oxygen, their passion will wither with each passing moment.
Stanza 3: Therefore, let us embrace immediately with the passion of infinite time even though we are constrained by mortality.
-he wants them to “embrace” each other because time is running out
Once you have reconstructed Marvell's argument, you should be able to see how he carefully uses line, rhyme, and stanza to order the poem in a logical framework, while simultaneously offering a passionate appeal to his mistress to consummate their relationship.

Harlem Activity 2
What happens to a dream deferred?
Is it murdered?
Does it dry up
Like an empty cup
like a raisin in the sun?
Like a oven without a bun?
     Or fester like a sore—
Like the squeal of a boar
     And then run?
 Like boredom from fun?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
 Like feet in the heat
     Or crust and sugar over—
 Like a four leaf clover?
     like a syrupy sweet?
 When two people first meet
     Maybe it just sags
 Like two old sand bags
     like a heavy load.
 Like a smelly toad
     Or does it explode?
 Like a lawn, freshly mowed

an eye for an eye
The night air was soft and electric. Roger, who was just getting off work, hadn't a care in the world. He was ready to head into the weekend. While getting a few drinks at the bar with his friends, he noticed the girls across the bar smiling and waving at him. Naturally he walked over to talk to them. After a few minutes of talking and a handful of drinks, roger notices a man creepily watching the girls from a table behind them. The man then walks up behind on of the girls and grabs her by the arms, swiftly pulling her away. Roger, heroically, tackles the man and starts mercilessly hitting him until his friends peel him off. The man was laying on the floor, covered in his own blood, pleading for help. After roger had saved the girl from this evil man, he looked up in hopes of a warm embrace, only to see them crying over the man on the floor. Roger, confused, asks, “why are you worried about this man who tried to take you?” The girl, with tears running down her face, replies, “he's my father!” The girls help the man up and bring him outside. Roger waited patiently for the girls to come back, after a few hours he was about to give up and go home but right before his departure, he hears the bar door creak open. he could hear the footsteps of three people walking in. Nervously hoping it was the girls coming back to console him, he jumps down from the bar stool and turns around. Only to see three large guys standing in front of him. Roger waited for the girls, but got their brothers instead.
