he’s used to being alone. it’s a combination of choice and necessity – he can’t think surrounded by the noise and the crowds that have been moving into skyhold. it’s easier in his small room away from all of it, open and drafty enough to feel safe.
and because he feels at odds with the rest of the advisors. but that’s an entirely different story. it’s been a shifting, restless feeling ever since the herald had arrived. respect for her and doubt about her war within him, a cognitive dissonance that’s easier to hide than confront.
but, of course, just as he’s musing on it, she arrives. his gaze jumps up when she opens the door, guilty. but the wine – almost a peace offering – isn’t what he expects to see. she must be having a difficult night if she’s come to drink with him.
“ oh, I – yes, of course inquisitor. please, come in. ”

It was normal to tend to the tavern. Drinking seemed to be the average pastime for everyone here. Of course, end of the world would do that to you. However, it was harder to enjoy her drink when she had to be surrounded by people. Didn’t know how people could stand the noise of it all, over lapping words and spilling drinks. Everything was so loud. And everyone would speak of the Herald as if she wasn’t there.
The stone ramparts offered solace but a bottle or two of wine without company was boring. And would lead to her leaning too far. Lead to her looking at the sky till she was weeping again. Or — No. Too many bad results at being completely alone. And Cullen wasn’t her first choice but he was the closest. And the most likely to not talk too much. Quietly opening his door, she popped her hand in, holding out a bottle.
❝ Do you want to join me for a drink?❞ She asked, through the crack of the door.

it isn’t contempt for her that curls his lip. it’s contempt for the whole damn world, for himself. no, he hadn’t spoken with revas about this particular... problem that plagues him. no, he never meant to speak with her about it. nerves raw with withdrawal, it wasn’t a discussion that would end well. what regard would such a mage have for his cowardly and weak attempt at redemption?
“ i have to wonder what link exists between lyrium and singing. ” he knows he’s being avoidant. it’s easier to focus on the bewildering end to her statement than the beginning.
@autosoteriisms ││continued from here.
One would think she cared about the Commander far more than she did by how much she would approach him. Whether it was bringing him notes or just to simply bother him. She could still feel the hate she had for what he was lingering. But she was trying to not hate who he was, or was trying to be. He was worth some of her time, most days. Still, her steps are measured, careful when she approached him.
❝ Lyrium. Though, whispers say otherwise. You do not sing like other templars. You barely even hum anymore. ❞

“Before you do amazing things, sometimes you have to mess up a little.”
shakespeare inspired starters || accepting!
the fun thing about that statement was that she could be laying a judgement upon him, herself, or the inquisition as a whole. they were a mess of mistakes. this he knew. the difficult part was trying not to take all the blame as his own, trying to look past his own glaring failures.
“ is that a personal reflection or an accusation, inquisitor? ”

“It’s one thing to be tempted and another to let yourself give in to that temptation.”

his lips quirk with false amusement, but he doesn’t meet her eyes. it’s the only way he knows how to handle her; an unruffled air and pretending to be absorbed in a map. because he doesn’t know what to say, because he doesn’t know what she wants from him, because all logic says they shouldn’t even be speaking.
“and what temptation am I meant to be yielding to this time?”
