The Dalton Gang
Yesterday in History: October 5, 1892
The Dalton gang, infamous for their bank and train robberies, attempted their last heist in Coffeyville, Kansas. Their audacious plan was to simultaneously rob two banks that stood across the street from one another, Condon & Co’s and First National Bank.
Tumblr media
Images of Condon & Co’s Bank and First National Bank based on photographs taken by Tackitt and C.G. Glass, from Last Raid of the Daltons and Battle with the Bandits by David Stewart Elliott.
Unfortunately, the Dalton gang members were recognized despite their attempts to disguise themselves with fake beards, and news of a heist in progress spread throughout the town. Citizens of Coffeyville armed themselves and rallied to stop the Dalton gang from escaping, killing four gang members in the process.
Emmett Dalton, the youngest of the Dalton brothers, was the only survivor, although he did receive numerous gunshot wounds. He was arrested and sentenced to life in prison in Lansing, although he served only fourteen years before the governor of Kansas pardoned him. He married Julia Johnson and moved to California, where he became a realtor, actor, and author. In 1931, he published his novel When the Daltons Rode, an account of the lives that he and his brothers led during what he viewed as the last days of the American Old West.
