Once Fliss pulled away, the two halves of Autumn's brain crashed back together, suddenly on the same side again, and began screaming at her. That was her first kiss, and it was amazing, and everyone had been staring at them when it happened. She needed to go and have a meltdown right now, but she could definitely not do that because she'd promised Fliss to help her. Running off after that would be the opposite of helping. At least Fliss took the attention straight off them. That was the one saving grace in this. She managed a smile at Yuki, which must have seemed normal enough because Yuki just winked at her before looking back at Fliss' mum. Autumn stared determinedly at Fliss' mum too, resolutely not looking at Fliss, and did not hear a single word she said.
Autumn was already looking forward to the end of this holiday. It was a shame, since they were going to such lovely places and having such nice times, but it was constantly overshadowed by the fake relationship. She was always on tenterhooks, worried she'd slip up, and aware how often people were looking at them. Every time they could get a bit of distance she breathed a sigh of relief, able to relax a little. This was rare, though, because everyone assumed they wanted to be together all the time. Take now, for example. There weren't quite enough seats for everyone, so they'd left the loveseat for Autumn and Fliss, assuming they'd want to be snuggled up together. Autumn was very aware of how close they were pressed together, and how Fliss had thrown an arm around her. It wasn't like it was awful - Fliss smelt good, and her skin was really soft - but it was weird. She wanted to jump up and shout, "This is fake! We've been fooling you all!" and then hide forever.

If Autumn were a more violent person, she would consider hitting Parker for that comment. As it was, she didn't even glare at them. She could feel herself going red. This was humiliating. Maybe the earth would open up and swallow them. There could be a spell for that. She was on the verge of jumping up and shouting the truth when she realised Fliss was moving. The thought that Fliss was about to admit the truth crossed her mind, before she realised what was going on and her mind short-circuited. She kissed her back before she even knew what she was doing. One side of her mind was screaming, "What are you doing oh my god stop," while the other side was screaming, "Shut up this is brilliant keep going."

Autumn managed to relax a little during Fliss' parents' story. It was sweet, actually, and she did really like Fliss' parents. If this relationship was real, she definitely wouldn't mind them as parents-in-law. They got along so well, and didn't argue, at least not in front of the kids, which seemed like a minor miracle to Autumn. Fliss' shoulder rub was actually a little calming, and she was just beginning to feel really relaxed when Fliss' mum gestured at them, and Autumn froze. Oh no. Their friends hadn't said anything yet, in a great show of self-restraint. She half-wondered whether Yuki had said something to them. Of course she knew Yuki wouldn't out her asexuality, but maybe she'd just told them to be sensitive. Well, some of them would be anyway, like Kit, but others, mentioning no names, Parker and Jasper, weren't usually Captain Sensitive. Her mind started to whirl. Now it'd been brought up, surely one of their friends would say something, and then this whole thing was sure to come crashing down around them.

"Oh, phew, my parents worry enough about how quiet I am without me being silenced," she joked, nudging Fliss back. She scolded herself for caring about Fliss' joke in the first place. Why was she having feelings about this whole stupid situation? "I am very susceptible to bribery," she said. Well, clearly. "I didn't even think about that. I hope I don't." This would be a horrible time to learn that she was seasick. Merlin, that was something else to worry about. At least she'd be able to hide down in her cabin and not worry about acting for everyone.
It was three days into their trip, and Autumn had to admit it: she was enjoying herself. It helped that they were having a lot of fun, and that her best friend was there, but she found she was actually enjoying spending time with Fliss. On the hike on the first day, they’d wound up walking together, and she’d found that Fliss was hilarious and kind. It was less awkward than she’d worried it might be, too, sharing a room with her. They were both used to sharing a room because of their dorms, and all three nights so far they’d been so exhausted they’d just collapsed into bed and fallen straight to sleep. Today they were going on a slightly shorter walk, so hopefully they’d be less tired today.
After they got out of the cable car, Autumn found herself naturally falling into step with Fliss. “Hey,” she said, offering a smile; they’d not really talked this morning, having hastily got ready without much of a chat.

Autumn's stomach twisted a little at that, genuinely wounded, and she had to remind herself that of course she wasn't special. Even though she knew Fliss was joking, she also knew she wasn't her first or even fifteenth choice for a fake partner. "Silenced? Should I be worried?" she asked, a beat too late. "A jacuzzi? That's fancy-fancy." It did sound really nice, though. And Yuki would be able to join in more than she had so far. "That is probably true," she ceded, since they were now trying to out-scream each other, which would win the argument in some way? She really didn't get them. She liked them both, but they were on a whole different wavelength. It boggled her mind that they were all friends, but then sometimes you'd see Jazz lying despondently on Yuki when he was having a bad brains day or Parker chattering to Daji to distract him when his bleeding wouldn't stop and you got it. They all knew what it was like to have a Hard Time.

"Sometimes? Is this not the first time this has happened to you?" Autumn asked, letting herself be a little cheeky. She admired Fliss' audacity, really; she'd never dare lie to her parents, they'd go absolutely berserk if they found out. Then they'd accuse each other of being the bad influence. "I am looking forward to the cruise," she said, smiling. She didn't want to wish the days away; she'd rather be here, lying, than at home. "Aw, really?" She was surprised it wasn't Mikki, considering she was Fliss' best friend. She grinned, looking ahead to where Jazz and Park were bounding between rocks and talking very loudly about The Traitors. "If only we could channel their energy, we could power the whole of England."

Stealing a sidelong glance at Fliss, she saw her cheeks redden. Whoops, yep, she shouldn't have said that. "It's ok! I get it, parents are... a lot." Hers weren't so worried about relationships, but she did get the third degree about how her studies were going every time she went home. Fliss' parents didn't seem that intense, but she supposed they'd act different in front of other people. "It's only a few more weeks, anyway," she added, trying to look on the bright side. She ducked her head; it was her turn to blush. "I'm sure it helps that we're all here together, it takes the focus off me."

"I guess it's a weird thing to lie about, and we don't lie often," Autumn said. She'd been thinking about this a lot, trying to decide if she should be offended that Yuki believed it so easily. Maybe she shouldn't say that it was weird to Fliss, though, considering she was the reason they were lying. Humans were too complicated; she wished she was an otter. "At least they'll expect me to be nervous around them." She'd put too much thought into this. She nodded in agreement with Fliss, though she felt like she'd need a holiday after this holiday: a holiday from lying.

It was nice that Fliss looked pleased to see her. She knew it was probably just for show, but looking around, she realised nobody was actually looking at them. Which meant the grin was just for her, and that felt nice. "I'm ok! I'm having a lovely time," she admitted, still shy around her supposed girlfriend. "Yeah. I feel like I didn't even need to be nervous, y'know. Everyone's believed us, and no-one's asked any awkward questions..." she trailed off, and gave a little shrug. "How are you doing?"
