She grinned at him,“I think it would be a poetic way to die. Master is bested by student.” Martina wouldn’t give up her and Jax’s relationship for anything, he had done a lot for her and taught her a lot. “To be fair I haven’t died either, so we’re both pretty skilled.”

“Maybe poetic for you. It would just be death for me. So I’m going to pass,” he said as he continued to climb onward. “Yeah, but I haven’t died longer that you have. So you have to respect me,” he continued to insist in a joking manner.

“You forget the fermoral artery, my friend. I cut it deep enough and you’ll be dead within a minute. Don’t need to slit your throat then.” She smiled sweetly at him, quite happy with her knowledge on blood coming in handy. “It’s not my fault you’re getting old. Why should I respect you anyways? All you did was not die.”

Jax grinned back at her, too proud to be upset. “I think it’d be pretty rude to use the femoral artery against who showed you where said artery was.” It’d been quite some time ago, and early on in her tutelage. “Yeah. And not dying in this mess of a world takes skill. So, respect me, Squirt.”

Despite a tested relationship, Jax and Cat had been able to work together with a level of professionalism that she had hardly worried might’ve been permanently lost. However they were able to work together well despite everything that had happened. “We’re at war ladies and gentlemen,” Cat said loudly so their entire cohort could hear them, “I will keep you out here all night every night until you run these drills perfectly with your eyes closed. Just like I know you can.”

Unfortunately, working well together didn’t mean that he once again trusted his sister. It was a sad reality, but one he’d learned to live with at this point. Nevertheless, it was always nice to work with Cat simply because of the ease with which they functioned together. They practically finished one another’s orders. “And don’t forget upside down, as well,” he added on for the benefit of their Legionnaires.

“I could still probably take you,” She said, sticking her tongue out at him. She wasn’t the biggest fan of climbing, but she did understand why it was such a good work out. Taking a moment to breath, before continuing her ascent,“I would not. I would call you a liar.” 

He readily scoffed at her words. “Please. You wouldn’t even be able to reach anything vital on me to slash through and kill me. You’d need to get a chair just to slit my throat.” At least he hadn’t set this climb to the lava setting, though he was thinking of doing so for round two. Might as well work up to it, right? Especially since he wanted to make sure Martina was back in shape before doing so. “Well that’s rude. What ever happened to respecting your elders? Kids these days.”

If Martina was closer to Jax, she would have hit him. “Listen, it’s not my fault I couldn’t work out for a month.” She grunted as she struggled to make the jump between a hand hold. She had jumped straight back into training, but she had definitely lost some muscle definition during that month she wandered the woods. As she paused for a second, she took a small piece of chalk out of her chalk bag and throw it at Jax,“You’re annoying.”

Jax was more than glad to see Martina back in action, and though he mostly wouldn’t admit it— his worry about her had been only growing. “Well we just have to make up for it, then,” he yelled back over his shoulder once more. But he watched carefully as she made her jump, ready to assist should she need it. He couldn’t dodge the chalk when it had been thrown at his back, so as it hit him he chuckled. “Would you believe you’re the first one to ever call me that?”

Raising an eyebrow amused by Jax’s antics. She’d already finished her circuit having been in the previous round. “Remember,” she said loudly, “best times get duty priority, that means you can choose what duty you want to do.” She looked at the rest of her cohort who was working with Jax. “Push yourselves, I want to see you sweat.”

Even though their relationship had been on the ropes for nearly a year now, ever since his birthday really, there was still no doubt that Jax and Cat worked flawlessly together when with their Cohort. It was a testament to a literal lifetime of being accustomed to it. There were almost to the top of the climb now, and Jax made sure everyone was still in line behind him. “Come on, Reyes! Put it into motion! If you’re not fast enough in the field you get killed.”

“Speak for yourself!” She laughed before grabbing onto his foot. Bella thought about tugging on him, throwing him down to the ground. Instead she just pulled herself up, at most only throwing him off balance, before she pulled herself onto his back until she was able to use his shoulder as a foothold and climbed past him.

Jax rolled his eyes as he continued to climb, not bothering to try and shake Bella off. After all he wasn’t about to send his cousin careening towards the ground beneath them. They were getting fairly high up. “That’s not really the point of the exercise, Bella,” he chastised lightly.

Jax looked back to the person that was still climbing behind him, calling out in between a couple of his climbing motions to them. “If you couldn’t keep up, you shouldn’t have signed up for this exercise class.” It was mostly meant as a jab to give the person behind him a boost. In the recent weeks— throwing himself into workouts, and leading training exercises had provided him with a decent distraction, whilst still benefiting himself and the other members of New Rome.

Raising an eyebrow gently at Jax. Percy didn’t have a smart comeback for Jax,the Romans in a pretty much so he remained silent for moment before sighing sadly. “This war is absolutely untenable,” he replied, “but I can’t back down, my people have been through way too much for me to allow this war to end without a more favourable conclusion for us.”

Who was Percy going to blab to about what Jax might say here? It wasn’t as if he’d go running to the Romans and spout revelations to undermine a man that was seemingly trying to help the son of Poseidon.  “And what would your more favorable conclusion look like?” he asked carefully. If he seemed too eager to find a compromise, he had a feeling Percy would simply turn suspicious. Jax would, were their positions switched.

They hadn’t been looking through the books for too long, and she was sure that they were going to have a much longer way to go. This was probably her 100th time looking through this library for research purposes, but most times weren’t quite as time sensitive. “Nope,” She sighed, popping the ���p’ as she spoke. When Nash chirped next, she got up to go and grab the book that the bird was pointing out. 

Jax ran a single hand through his hair, rather annoyed that of all the times the Cult decided to go and curse the entire city it was now. Of course, he knew it hadn’t been intentional, had been there when the black plumes of smoke filled the city with the ritual that had gone terribly wrong...but he couldn’t help that his patience was thin these days, though he was careful not to let it show. “This would be easier if the Cult had done more research on countering the standard before the ritual.”

“I trust you. I’ve literally trust you with my life, Jax. I’m just worried about you. I care about you and I’m worried,” Lina said in a rush, before her cheeks stained with pink slightly. She didn’t mean to rush to explain what she was feeling. Though his little joke had her in better mood than she had been in before. She grinned at him,“You’re a nerd. You watch telenovelas?” 

Jax’s gaze softened in the slightest as Lina admitted her concern. That was something he could understand. “I’ll be fine. There’s nothing to be worried about, alright?”  Still, he was glad that she cared so much. “Of course I don’t watch telenovelas,” he said before a pause. “Nash does. But I’ll see you around, Lina. Be safe.” This conversation had already gone on for too long.

Jax set his selected books that he’d fetched from the oldest part of the library with a thud on one of the many mahogany tables that filled the enormous and extravagant library of the Karavadra Estate. Meanwhile Nash was flitting throughout the shelves unable to be reached without a ladder, alerting Jax to tomes that might prove useful. For now though, he cracked open another dusty book. “Find anything of use?” he asked Bella in a pause between reading.

“His legs. They - they were like a deer or something.” She took a few more steps back from him, feeling as though every admission she had was just digging herself into a deeper hole. “W-why?” 

Fighting off the urge to cry, Harper pressed her palms against the sides of her thighs. “I d-do.” Or do I? She shook her palms, running them through her hair. “I was in-invited. So I came.” Harper glanced up at the man, only barely making eye contact. “I was told this was a place for people like me.” Even though I don’t see how. “I c-can leave you be, I didn’t mean to disturb you, I promise.”

So it had been a faun or satyr that had guided her, though he’d already guessed as much. He let her have her few steps away, fairly confident he’d be able to catch her if it was proven that he needed to. He let his facial expression shift easily, careful to make sure that he looked the opposite of the night-stalking animal he’d been exuding during their conversation, letting relief wash over his face. “A faun sent you? Then maybe you do belong here. I didn’t realize one had sent you.”

The safest thing would be to take her to New Rome. At least, it’d be the safest thing for him. It’s what he would have done before his turn of heart. “I’m sorry if I scared you. It’s just that— we have to be very careful here. We can’t have the wrong people finding us. You don’t have to leave.”

Her lips flattened into a tight line at his comment. Of course she believed that, she knew Jax well enough to know that he had a handle on situations. Knowing that didn’t make her feel any better. She huffed out of her nose,“I don’t like being in the dark about these things. You can’t blame me for wanting to know.” She was rather certain that he would be curious about what she was doing if their positions were flipped. “I still don’t like goodbyes,” She told him softly.

He didn’t want to make this a big deal, but it was frustrating that Lina didn’t trust him to know what he was doing, and that he would have told her if he could. “I’m not blaming you for wanting to know. I just mentioned trusting me.” He wanted to move on from this. They weren’t getting anywhere. Of course he’d be curious if their positions were flipped, but he wasn’t blaming her for being curious. “Then it won’t be goodbye. It’ll just be see you later,” he said in a soft tone that matched her’s. Jax tried for a slight tease. “I got that straight out of a telenovela.”

“You’d have to be funny to make a joke Jax, and the thought that any Roman might have a sense of humour seems ridiculous.” Pausing for a moment, Percy raised an eyebrow. He’d seen too much death, pain and wounds, too much blood. There was too much of it to laugh about it for now. “Your hair isn’t long enough to braid, but maybe if you tried putting a bit of your wit into ending this war we might’ve been able to have a peaceful resolution. But then again maybe it was too much for me to expect any real intelligence or foresight out of a Roman.” 

Jax simply rolled his eyes, tiring rather quickly of this little verbal spar of their’s. He had more important places to be, more important things to do. Instead, he took on a more sincere air, realizing that even though Percy still annoyed him— the man would certainly be a powerful ally to have. He was currently assessing the risks his mind was considering running. If he really wanted to help the Greeks, wouldn’t it be better to have one of the people in charge with him? Or at least trusting him to some extent? And yet it went against every fiber he’d ever been taught when it came to Greeks and secrets. But he trusted that they both wanted this war to end. “I don’t think either of us wanted to be here fighting another war, Jackson.”
