Between The Company of Wolves (1984) and Dellamorte Dellamore (1994) I am on a roll with the "movies that are classified as horror but upon watch are surreal super horny dreamscapes about the human condition" genre so if anyone has any more of those please let me know.

so much of the horror genre is informed by the metaphor of queer/transness as monstrousness. especially emphasizing the amount of horror that depends on the audience's repulsion at seeing a human body changing into a new, other body. I Saw the TV Glow is about the horror of NOT transitioning. the horror of static. the horror of looking into yourself and being terrified of what you see. the horror of seeing who you are and choosing to do nothing about it. the horror of looking away. and by god is it terrifying.

“I think the real kind of thrust of it was to show that Shauna is still really traumatized by her past. I think that’s one of the big themes of the show is, ‘how do we escape past trauma? Can we move on?’ I think one of the things that they were playing with this Adam character was that he was trying to present himself as being genuine and honest and earnest, and no one believes him. I think that is actually quite a clever way to demonstrate that our own trauma can project itself on others and, obviously, Shauna killing him a combination of it. She cannot believe in goodness anymore. She cannot believe in honesty anymore, and she goes so far as to murder an innocent man.“ — Peter Gadiot

well i think at some point in the course of being a horror fan it doesn't matter if the film actually scares you or not it's more about appreciating the craftsmanship the practical effects etc and the historical/sociopolitical analyses you can have of it. there's basically no horror movie that has actually scared me past the age of maybe 15 that doesn't mean the films are bad + more interested in like the film's conception of body integrity in regards to fascism for instance

If I had a nickel for every 2024 horror movie where the final girl teams up with a little monster girl to defeat an evil bespectacled Dan Stevens with a funny accent, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice

So...I just came across a video on YouTube that was going through "horror hot takes"...just watched it to pass the time and one of them was "I don't like the classics, I think they're boring"...and the host said that was a common take and showed a multitude of comments with the same sentiment. One of which was basically "nothing from the 20th century".
And I just....it just makes me sad.
That people are so unwilling to try these older films. And not that's not even limited to horror...so many people comment about how the older films are boring, or they don't age well or they're dumb and it just hurts my heart.
And to get back to horror...the movies that are being released nowadays would not exist without these older movies.
Love The Others? Or The Woman in Black? Or Mike Flanagan's first two horror series?
Those would not exist without The Haunting, The Innocents or Diaboliques.
Joy Ride would not exist without Duel.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose would not exist without The Exorcist.
Longlegs would not exist without Se7en or Silence of the Lambs.
Any movie where a killer is chasing someone with a knife would not exist without Psycho or Halloween.
What Lies Beneath is basically a love letter to Hitchcock films combined with a ghost story.
And Robert Egger's Nosferatu would 100% not exist without the 1922 silent film.
Granted, some people at least acknowledge the historical significance of these movies, but just say they aren't fans...but it seems like so many people just don't want to give the older movies a chance. They automatically assume that they're going to be bored by them. And I get it. It took a lot of convincing from my parents to watch Wait Until Dark, and now it's one of my favorites.
But also...to limit yourself to just the past 25 years when it comes to media (or honestly, anything) ...you are missing out on so much. It doesn't mean you have to watch movies from the 30's...but you could at least try something from the 80's or the 90's.
Thanks for reading my ramblings.
I'm going to go watch a movie from the 20th century.
#real don't limit yourself you're missing out!#plus seeing the originals that inspired some of yr favs today#and the special effects with the tech they had at the time#you might discover a new favorite scream queen/king#sometimes classics suck sure but sometimes they're classics for a reason#and you never know whether you're going to like it or not until you try it

i love horror, it's my favorite genre and i literally annoy my family because 90% of the time if i pick a movie it's horror but i feel like we (and by that i mean horror fans as a whole) need to be aware of some of the very real problems with horror and various forms of bigotry because they are, unfortunately, fucking everywhere in this genre and once you start seeing them you can't stop

Yooooooo……
youtube
I’M SO FUCKING READY. I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOVIE SINCE JANUARY 2024. I WILL BE FULLY SEATED ON MAY 23.
(Also, hello prom dress from the original book cover. Nice to see that even if the story isnt sticking to the book, the costume department seems to care about the source material. It’s at 0:03 if anyone cares.)

remembering the time I called american psycho (a satirical film about toxic masculinity) a dark comedy and the overwhelming response was 'oh so u think men killing sex workers is funny? u think THAT'S funny?' like no I find a patrick batemen listening to 'i'm walking on sunshine', killing jared leto while wearing a clear raincoat and giving a dissertation on huey lewis n the news, using 'I need to return some video tapes' to get out of awkward situations, throwing a hissy fit about business cards, dropping a chainsaw down a flight of stairs, thinking an atm is telling him to feed it cats, and crying hysterically under a desk is funny. but thank u for ur wonderful insight
