#Repost @nmaahc with @get_repost ・・・ The earliest account of what would later become Memorial Day, was organized in a former Confederate Prison Camp in Charleston, S.C. on May 1, 1865. The celebration was established by thousands of newly freed African Americans and U.S. Colored Troops regiments. This group came together to honor the 257 Union soldiers that died as a result of the poor conditions of the Confederate Prison Camp during the war. They removed the soldiers from a mass grave that the Confederates made and created proper burial grounds for Union soldiers. Together they sang hymns, set flowers, and gave readings in honor of the soldiers’ sacrifice. #MemorialDay #MilitaryAppreciationMonth #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory 📸: Company E, 4th US Colored Troops at Fort Lincoln, November 17, 1865, Library of Congress. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx-K7FfJzOY/?igshid=jfr45omy57lq

#Repost @joyannreid with @get_repost ・・・ What Dr. King said about walls during his 1964 visit to Berlin, from @time Magazine: On Sept. 13, 1964 — two months after the Civil Rights Act was enacted and a month before he won the Nobel Peace Prize — King addressed 20,000 people at a rally at the outdoor stadium Waldbühne in West Berlin. He also visited the spot where, earlier that day, East Berlin guards had shot and wounded a resident who was trying to climb over the wall into West Berlin. King also delivered the same sermon at St. Mary’s Church in East Berlin, which was over its 2,000-person capacity, and then gave another, unscheduled speech to the overflow crowd at Sophia Church, similarly over its 2,000-person capacity. And, in a city with a division that could not be avoided, he said that, while he was no expert in German politics, he knew about walls. “It is indeed an honor to be in this city, which stands as a symbol of the divisions of men on the face of the earth,” he told East Berliners. “For here on either side of the wall are God’s children and no man-made barrier can obliterate that fact. Whether it be East or West, men and women search for meaning, hope for fulfillment, yearn for faith in something beyond themselves, and cry desperately for love and community to support them in this pilgrim journey.” Read the whole thing here: http://time.com/5504826/martin-luther-king-wall-history/ https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs6OYaglRTk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1adlhdblhfq23

#Repost @nmaahc with @get_repost ・・・ African American soldiers have served in every war in the United States. In choosing to join the military, African Americans sought to have their service understood by the nation as a demand for liberty and citizenship. African American men and women who engaged in the military made their service useful not only for the good of their country, but to benefit both their personal lives and their community. Today, we honor your sacrifice. 🇺🇸#VeteransDay #APeoplesJourney https://www.instagram.com/p/BqF-sXrFWeQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qmu6ywvleomy

I'm jumping in at day seven of the February #yarnlovechallenge: designer. I have lots of sketches I need to execute; turns out sketching is the easy part! Being disciplined about writing the patterns, finding the yarn that I envisioned, and swatching it all take more effort than I had imagined. Pictured are my Hempathy skirt, modeled by fellow knitter Deb Rucker; and twin set in progress.
