why do people ship zutara again? they didn't even have a romantic moment...
People wanted Katara to bang Zuko because they couldn’t and most people identified with Katara more than Mai, so they wanted to live their fantasies through a character.

The drawback of Avatar the Last Airbender's second life thanks to Netflix is having to see the Zutara fanbrats come out of the woodwork.
Honestly, the only reason why this ship exists at all is the same reason why Draco/Hermione (another ship I fucking hate and one of the few times Rowling did something right in shooting it down, don't @ me) exists. Dark brooding guy who needs to be fixed gets all the fangirls so they have to pair him off with the main girl to avoid making obvious Mary Sue's for their stupid fanfics.
Good on Bryan and Mike for not bending (har!) to those "demands". And shame on the fangirls for turning Aaron Ehasz into their tool based on unsubstantiated rumors.
And no, Katara was not a prize for Aang and to insinuate that she was is a real disservice to her as a character and her own agency and the relationship that developed between them.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

How Katara clearly treats Zuko like a brother
So my brain randomly started working(ish) today, and for some reason, it wanted to think about Zutara, and it just found it hilariously ridiculous (even more than normally, that is), that the Zutarians view the Kataang relationship as more of a brother/sister one than Zutara. Brain came to an astonishing conclusion: Katara treats Zuko completely like a brother, (except being declared enemies, that is).
So while brain was having fun, I tried to keep track. We know how Katara’s relationship is with her actual brother, Sokka - meaning we know how she’d treat another brother-figure in her life. Brain started to compare this with Zuko, and it went like thus:
Sokka and Katara are not overly affectionate with the other, although they are not afraid of having physically affectionate moments: We see them hugging several times. As brain likes to think, there’s nothing romantic or weird in that, and neither Katara or Sokka seems to think so. Then brain thinks, it’s sort of the same with Zuko – they are by no means, physically over-affectionate, but there are a few instances of them touching. Like, their hug, or Katara touching his back after healing him in SC. Not romantic either, says brain.
How about Aang on this? Oh yeah, touching all the time.
Katara is motherly, that is a fact, and she is motherly also to Sokka. We know how much she cares for him, but she doesn’t flat out say thinks like, “The world can’t afford to loose you to the Fire Nation – and neither can I” to him very often. The same with Zuko – she cares about him, (or she does, in the ending, anyway), but brain couldn’t come up with a single instance where she fired a cheesy “Zuko, you mean the world to me”ish line at him. Brain conclude, that while Katara cares about her “brothers” she doesn’t need to tell them all the time.
Aang on the other hand… She’s always talking about how special, and precious he is, and how much she cares about him.
Then brain when on, and thought about how Katara acts when Sokka is down. She is her natural motherly self, and comforts him. An example is Sokka’s Master. For some reason, brain found this oddly alike with Katara comforting Zuko outside Iroh’s tent. Brain reminds me that she is never over-affectionate in her comforting, only “maternally”. Not in a “come here, you need a hug” and let me just invade every bit of personal space of your body-way, every time they are looking slightly sad. But in a “what’s wrong? Look, it’s not as bad as you think” way whenever they look like they could use some help, which brain considers perfectly normal between family and friends.
Aang? She is all over him, at every given opportunity.
Then brain moves on to ponder on a side of Katara that it really likes: Her feisty, cheeky and sarcastic side. It’s a side we almost only see in her relation to Sokka, (and sometimes, Toph) – he is the only member of the Gaang she constantly pokes fun of, fights with (without any real reason) and is the victim of a seldom seen (but much appreciated (by brain)) side of her, that is her Sokka-like sarcasm. Then brain makes a connection – after Katara and Zuko finally becomes friends, pretty much every interaction that is not about Aang, being disgusted with the idea of them romancing or related to the war, is her making fun of him. (“Look at baby Zuko! Isn’t he cuuuuute” or “Actually, I think that actor’s pretty spot on”).
And we all know that Aang and Katara rarely fights, and never (or, anyway, brain couldn’t think of any instance where they) make fun of each other. They laugh with the other, never of the other. Unlike Katara with Zuko and Sokka, is brain’s conclusion.
So, brain tried, and failed at sorting this mess out.
Katara + Sokka => Sibling/platonic relation. Zuko + Katara + friendship = Katara + Sokka-like relation = romance potential? Aang + Katara = Much closer, affectionate and coupe-like in their relation = brotherly/maternal?
PLEASE, WHERE IS THE LOGIC.

what annoys me about zuko/katara is how shippers see katara being rightfully angry at zuko for his complacency in the violence against her people, and they see her distrusting him for it, and they make it into a sexual tension or tsundere thing. it’s totally dismissive and invalidating of her anger, and it makes me wonder whether these people are similarly dismissive of the thoughts and emotions of actual colonized peoples

What if air nomads are pacifists bc they used to do shit like suffocating people and then saw the destruction they caused so turned away from it 🤔🤔
secret lore 👀? what if the reason why air nomads distance themselves from the rest of the world is because they don’t want to be tempted back into that cycle of violence

Anonymous asked kataangcaps:
Some zutarians were trying to make an argument that katara was lying to aang about being confused due to the war and was actually rejecting him b/c sokka and suki were a couple, wtf..
Well, I think people are getting a little desperate here. It’s like they already tried a billion other arguments and they’ve all flopped once you actually, idk, watch the show? So now it’s onto the latest attempt. And I don’t get what they’re even saying, that everyone has to react the same way otherwise they’re a lying sack of shit? Jesus, let’s remember that we’re all different and some people take things like relationships a lot more seriously. Katara, especially, we already know she has deep feelings for Aang and cares about him more than anyone else, she’s not going to treat their relationship like a typical teen romance, which no offense to Sukka, I think they’re cute but their relationship is much more of a standard hormonal teen romance. Sukka got together rather quickly and have spent most of the series apart, it’s really not the same thing as falling for your best friend and watching horrible things happen to him and wondering if he’ll die again.
But basically Sokka and Suki are totally irrelevant to Kataang cause neither of them have any responsibility in this war. They CHOSE to take part in the war effort but it’s not like they’re being forced into the role like Aang. And if one of them fails, then it’s not a big deal for the world. Of course it would be sad if they died for their family and friends but lbr, the world wouldn’t really care cause tons of people have already died in the war and they would just be another number in the body count. But if Aang failed? Roku pretty much spelled it out, the world would be eternally fucked and never recover. Aang can’t afford to lose because literally everything depends on him, but Sokka and Suki are just regular citizens fighting in the war so they’re allowed to be carefree enough to have a relationship.
But if you honestly think Katara doesn’t want to be with Aang, then I’m pretty sure you missed these moments:
This looks like a girl who’s totally ready to jump all over the boy of her dreams as soon as she knows he’ll be safe and not taken from her AGAIN. This girl has blushed during their ‘romantic’ moments, kissed him on the cheek constantly, gotten jealous at other girls giving him attention, tried to suggest kissing to get out of a cave, and left her home and tribe to help him after knowing him for all of 2 days.
So Zutarians, I think it’s best not to presume you know what Katara’s feelings were since you seemed to have missed half the show where she displayed all the clear and present markers for romantic attraction for Aang at some point or another (blushing, jealousy, kissing, sexy dance number, etc).
And guess what.

Once Aang was safe, she proceeded to jump him on a balcony at sunset and then made out with him with tongue for a good 5 minutes. So let’s see, a girl tells a boy that she’s not ready for a relationship because of a war going on and then when the war ends, she makes out with him constantly, daydreams about having his baby, eventually marries him and has kids/grandkids with him.. so that must mean, she was lying and trying to hide her secret feelings for some other dude she literally didn’t give two shits about romantically and actually expressed disgust at a possible relationship with? When there’s an obvious explanation sitting right in front you that was SPELLED OUT by the show literally and in the character’s actions and yet you still choose to believe a far more complicated, highly implausible, convoluted assumption, I think you’re living in denial and need to move on.

Little moments you might have missed.
The way Aang stops listening to Toph and Sokka as soon as Katara approaches with a light blush appearing on his cheeks. He only has eyes for her.

“You have indeed felt a great loss, but love is a form of energy, and it swirls around us. The Air Nomads’ Aang’s love for you has not left this world. It is still inside of your heart, and is reborn in the form of new love.”
The announcement of the upcoming graphic novel brought up all sorts of old feels, so in commemoration of the continuing story, I decided to break my own heart. Enjoy.
