Concept: Ifa was originally a Dottore Segment

…I know it sounds insane, but hear me out. 

Someone made an observation on Hoyolab that Ifa has the same hair color and almost the same hairstyle as the Dottore Segment in the Webtoon. While it's likely just canonically a coincidence, I have a fun spin on it to take it more literally. 

Ifa was originally a Dottore Segment, a unique one because Dottore made him using materials and processes to make him resemble a natlanese native as much as possible, so this segment could in theory, manipulate phlogiston and research the mechanics locked to Natlan natives. 

Furthermore, this segment of Dottore was from his younger more curious years. Where he hasn't quite gotten the apathy for scientific progress just yet. More bordering on the Dottore we know, but not quite there yet. This segment conducts research on the saurians in Natlan as well as experimenting with Phlogiston to unlock the ruins and mechanics in Natlan. For additional detail, this Segment ends up getting a saurian companion. One that refused to leave alone and one the segment decided was not worth using for an experiment. Perhaps the saurian was needed to unlock certain mechanisms, so he kept it around for that reason. Along the way though, the segment ends up getting attached to the saurian. 

At some point, something happens, causing the Leylines of Natlan and the Wayobs to sense the segment's incomplete state and… “completed” it. Fixed it. This procedure ends up causing the segment to lose their memories as their body and soul are modified to be claimed by the region as a native. With the power to manipulate phlogiston and acquire ancient names. 

When the segment wakes, they don't recall anything. Just an odd feeling of longing with a vision or ancient name in hand. He wakes up, continues on his way, and drifts along life. 

This concept, actually could explain or play into aspects of Ifa’s character that we know about. Beyond just the superficial reasons that jump started this whole thing. 

Ifa having gaps in his memories, with no real purpose or desire in life, would explain his personality we see in the game. Why Cacucu calls him “a bad guy who's resigned all the time.” Ifa is just drifting along, being a vet is good enough to keep him going, despite not really remembering or understanding what happened to him prior to gaining his vision. 

His vision too, also fits. Anemo means freedom, and when he obtained it, it broke him free from being simply one of Dottore's segments. The conversion and rebirth of him into a full natlanese is also an explanation for why he wouldn't be deleted when Dottore made that deal with Nahida. 

I started this as a silly concept, but the more I thought about it, the more it somehow ended up making sense and actually sounding plausible. 

Anyway, new concept, and this one has two fics! One I’m starting and another by another author. Please check them both out, they’re pretty different takes so both will be enjoyable I’m sure!
