Let's talk about the Avengers Assemble series.
I think the only reason it couldn't get a season 6 was because it was giving fans all the things the MCU couldn't/didn't. And filmmakers didn't like that. Seriously:
- It had a lot more of Falcon being an awesome dude (even had Falcon's mom bring them cookies on his first day)
- It had much more focus on Hawkeye and his cool sass and cool archery. He invented new arrows regularly.
- It had Stony. Lots of it. Absolutely made up for the near-complete lack of Stucky (because the movies already have that)
- Hawkeye being Stony shipper #1
- It had Black Widow being much better than in the movies (no sexist/objectifying portrayal of her)
- It actually explored the daily lives of the Avengers. Thor and Hulk fighting over peanut butter. Hawkeye enjoying said peanut butter while watching them fight. Steve and Tony doing training together. Steve and Tony talking about stuff. Lots of stuff.
- Tony used to pretend to be Captain America as a kid. There were pictures. There's a scene where Steve lends his shield to Tony during practice to see what he does with it.
- Hulk collects glass figurines in this universe. And keeps his room squeaky clean. And has a titanium blanket. Bruce is still a fucking genius.
- There were villains who haven't even been in the MCU yet.
- It ended its version of Civil War on a better note. Aka Steve and Tony team up for the bigger fight instead of acting like toddlers.
- Defeating Thanos was much easier here.
- It explored Steve's past and actually showed a more human side of him.
- It showed Steve painting portraits of all his teammates (aww) and also getting frustrated when his paintings don't turn out right (which is accurate and a much needed thing to show)
- It had him staying in the present (even after a time-space glitch caused Peggy and Howard to end up in the 21st century). Not that Steve didn't want to go back with her, he just chose the more sensible option.
- There were better jokes.
- All of them were attractive, even in animation. (I fell in love with AA!Steve first and AA!Clint is the reason I had a crush on the archer for a while)
- It did underrated characters justice.
- It was going great (really, 13 stars out of 10)
But that's why they shut it down.
Because too good wasn't okay for them.

I'm re-watching Avengers Assemble which is a thing I do every so often.
(Normally when I've had the opportunity to talk about what makes it so great and then I feel compelled to experience it again.)
And, as with every watch, I'm always stuck on how much I love the way they write Hulk. It can be a little complicated to explain what I like about it.
Part of it is The Repression of it. I'm always fond of characters with great mental fortitude, ones who have to always be in control. Episodes like s1ep11 Hulked Out Heroes display this well. With lines like "Pretend the doorknob is an egg. Pretend everything is an egg." explaining the concept of constant control best. There's something about strong characters living in a fragile world. Superman is in a world of glass, Hulk is in a world of cardboard.
Part of it is the frequent emphasis they put on how the Hulk is more than smashing. He collects glass figurines, he has friendships with a diverse range of people, he has a soothing fountain in his room. He's a gamma expert and his body is a gamma reactor. His whole thing is regulating the energy in his body, his power comes from unleashing anger but his skill comes from maintaining control. Everything about that is compelling.
Part of it is that he's often underestimated. He's frequently assumed to be too far gone from Bruce Banner to understand complex ideas. But he's still smart in there, there's just the distracting static of the energy. But he can focus.
I think it's fundamentally that every aspect of his character feels like it's about effort. He has to put on the effort to maintain control, put in the effort to manage the energy, put in the effort to focus.
And his story is also about identity. Bruce Banner and Hulk share a body, and Hulk is normally in charge, but sometimes Bruce pops in to lend a mental assist. Those identities feel separate, but they can talk to each other and they're both essential parts of the collective individual. Gamma scientist and gamma monster; two identities, one person. It's about the Duality.
I just really love the way they write the Hulk on Avengers Assemble.

Sometimes, the french dubbing messes up thing, sometimes it changes ‘Cap, it’s me, Tony. Yours and everybody’s favorite Avenger?’ into ‘Cap, it’s me, Tony. You’re my favorite Avenger, remember?’, and ‘For the record, Iron Man, that movie was just a documentary about you.’ into ‘I want to specify that it was a documentary about you, my dear Iron Man.’

I have no scanner today and my phone’s camera is half-broken right now, but here we are anyway. Maybe later I’ll clean this concept up and repost better versions. But like consider…. Steve goes with Tony at the end of AA season 3 and they become Feral Outlaw Husbands in Battleworld. They mostly live out of Tony’s pickup truck, but Tony also builds (or finds and tricks out?) Steve a motorcycle with fun Max Mad features. One is that Tony can clip his rocket boots in while riding passenger to give it a speed boost.

I love these idiot children. And I love that Tony does, in fact, never complain. No, “I can walk, put me down,” no “this is embarrassing,” just silent acceptance. Steve throws him over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes multiple times and he’s always just like yup okay this is what’s happening now. Take me away, stud.

I adored everything AA did with their Infinity Stones. The Mind Stone bodyswap in particular set loose dozens of plotbunnies in my brain, so I’m changing the end of the episode to keep it around. I even optimistically made a little header image for if/when those bunnies make it to comic form.

I’m no thoughts head empty today, but I must draw and post every day of December by order of ME, so here’s what I could salvage from today’s doodlepage.
That gag in Hulk and the Agents of SMASH about Tony only knowing how to rollerskate backwards is one of my favorite things in the damn universe, especially how they were so committed to the joke. Every time he went by, I lost it.

I re-watched The Emperor’s New Groove last night, lol. Pretty sure Avengers Assemble is one of the main things that kept me sane this year, so this month might just be eight months of pent-up fangirling all coming out at once.
