A year ago Amity was afraid to ask Luz to go to Grom with her because she was terrified of being rejected and now they're awesome girlfriends.

Korra and Asami only held hands because Nickelodeon wouldn’t let them do more. Once Nick learned this was the plan, they infamously cancelled Korra and put out the rest of season 4 as a webseries only.
Marceline and Princess Bubblegum only kiss in the very final episode because Cartoon Network wouldn’t let them do more. There are a ton of interviews with Pendelton and with the voice actresses where they talk about the CN censorship.
Steven Universe got as far as it did because Rebecca Sugar fought tooth and nail, and risked her show getting cancelled (which it did in many countries, if not heavily censored), because Cartoon Network wouldn’t let her. Ruby was often dubbed over with a male voice, and Pearl/Rose interactions were completely cut.
She-Ra managed to do it largely because it was specifically on Netflix only, and even then, Noelle has said they had to build 4 seasons of storyline very subtly around it so they had enough ammo to convince the execs that Catradora was the only logical conclusion to this show they had already aired. She didn’t just go in on Day 1 and make it gay; she had to plan many years in advance for how to set up her argument. Her argument, y’all.
And now we have The Owl House. Which is an absolutely wonderful show. And it’s so amazing that we actually get to see queer characters get the kind of representation that so many straight characters get. And it’s amazing we get to see the romance build up, instead of just a quick peck in the series finale!
Let’s not forget that in the US, it was illegal for gay people to get married until 2015. Korra aired in 2012. In Texas, it was a punishable felony to even be gay until the mid-90s. No, literally. Just being gay was an arrestable offense here in Texas until 1993. We have come a really long way in 20 years!
But don’t fucking dare disrespect any of these other shows by saying they didn’t try, or that their representation didn’t matter. The Owl House is standing on the shoulders of giants. Lumity is only where it is because Korrasami and Bubbline helped get them there.

Luz experiences in the human world had taught her that her being herself is not good enough. Being dorky and cheesy is not something good. It was something she was ostracised, if not outright bullied, for. So, basically, Luz wants to woo Amity, but without being herself.
What makes this so interesting is that Luz knows that Amity knows and likes her at this point. There’s no way she doesn’t.
But old insecurities are really hard to shake and, because of those, Luz has blinders on. So she thinks that she has to be really cool and perfect in order to woo Amity. Basically, being a massive dork while being Amity’s friend is one thing, being a massive dork while trying to win Amity’s heart is quite another.
But the thing is that we know that Amity loves those qualities about Luz. The fact that she can be a dork and/or cheesy is something Amity really likes.
So when going through the tunnel, we can see that Amity actually likes the whole thing. Cheese and all.
But when Luz has such a strong negative reaction to it and violently wants the ride to be over, Amity feels like she is being rejected. Like this whole thing was some cruel prank by Hooty.
So when trying to not be cheesy in front of Amity, Luz actually ended up making things worse. By making Amity feel like Luz didn’t want her. And that she was rejected in quite the cruel way. Which we know is Amity’s biggest fear.
Insecurities are hard to shake and can make you miss even the most obvious things. Luz might know that Amity likes her as a friend, but she wants to be seen as someone who Amity could potentially be interested in as more than that. And her experiences in the human world has taught her that Luz being Luz just isn’t good enough. Which makes me wonder if Luz has had a crush before in the human realm and was rejected.
I think that showing how your past insecurities, no matter how old, can still make a negative impact on your present is one part of the message here. But the overall message seems to be “just be yourself”, which is why I really liked Eda saying this
I think Eda had a realisation in this episode. We saw her dreamsequence of telling past-Eda to just talk to Raine, to just let them help her. We saw how Eda’s unwillingness to let Raine in, to just talk to them and let them be a part of her life is what caused them to pull away from her. Eda realised that hiding parts of yourself and not letting people see all of you is a bad thing. It cost her the person she loves and she doesn’t want Luz to go through that. Not to mention, she loves that kid and everything about her and anyone worth their salt would do the same.
Basically, Luz has been told by her peers her whole life that her being her wasn’t good enough. She was too cheesy. Too dorky. Because of that, Luz completely misses the fact that those qualities that she was ostracised for in the human realm are exactly the things that Amity loves about her. Amity loves her for her, which is honestly all anyone, no matter how old, could hope for.

The audience can’t explain why they feel like they can read Amity’s thought through her expression

confused

started to understand the situation

“Oh no ! If this is a date I have to look perfect !”
fixed her hair immediately

“Luz won’t accept my love”

tried to hold back tears and thought that Luz and her can’t be together

“ I’m out of patience ! I will ask her first !”

“Luz lost to me and her response to the loss is so cute !”

so like Hunter is probably related to a Clawthorne, at least to Eda’s dad right? I was willing to believe that Hunter having a bird palisman meant that he’d be adopted by a Clawthorne at some point, but the nose + hairstyle of Eda’s dad is just too similar, Eda’s widows peak (which i think she got from both parents, but her mother’s is just more prominent) is shared with Hunter, and the fact that the Clawthorne’s + Hunter have larger eyebrows than most of the cast are too noticeable at this point
but also–
not to mention both belos and eda’s dad’s eyes getting injured (on opposite sides of the face but still,,,)
I do think its interesting how both of them had an eye scare. And there are similar hair styles among the three men. And the portal was found in the Clawthorne backyard implying a connection to the human yet it is Hunter (and maybe Belos) who are the powerless witches implying a blood connection to Philip,,,
(but like it would be funny right)

🚨 SPOILERS BELOW 🚨
Oh Hooty, you big softy

I wonder how many times Hooty does this to the housemates?
I love how he wrote a poem to Luz just to have her come down to the basement.
"We have a basement?" Laughed at that line
AMITY?!?
Nope, it's just a lamp. Crisis avoided... For now
HOOTY, YOU CAN'T GO AND KIDNAP LUZ'S CRUSH!!! THERE ARE LAWS AGAINST THAT!!
Also, I'm concerned that 1) Hooty was able to get Amity without any problems, 2) Amity got pelleted, and 3) I want to see how Hooty was able to get Amity. And knowing Amity, she's plotting to kill Hooty at this point.
On to the juicy part of the episode:
Oh Luz, Amity doesn't think you're a loser.

The start of the tunnel is love

Yep, two teenagers in love, butt not willing to admit it to each other yet. Ugh, I want to give both of them a hug
Amity realizing that Luz likes her and is just speechless

She starts fixing her hair. I'm concerned that your crush is having a slight anxiety attack right next to your, but okay, fix your hair.

Luz has confessed her feelings before to someone in the human realm. Obviously, it didn't go well. I felt so bad for her. She doesn't deserve this kind of bullying. She do scared that Amity doesn't like her and when this "ride" is done, Amity will start making fun of her and tell everyone that a human fell in love with a witch.
As I've stated before, it's upsetting that this is Luz's first reaction to events like this. If she would have looked over at Amity, she would have noticed that Amity was enjoying this and loves this kind of cheesy romantic stuff.
More coming up!

What we wanted, deserves and needed. I wish I had seen this type of representation on screen as a kid. I wish I had seen that it was normal to like girls as a kid, normal to get flustered around girls, normal to have these feelings towards other girls and normal to like boys and girls, something about me that took years to realize and that I'm honestly still trying to accept about myself. Having a bi main character on screen, having two girls crush on eachother on screen, having two girls begin a romantic relationship with eachother on screen, and not only two girls but two young girls. Two teenage girls, going through these emotions, and realizing their feelings and seeing girls that looked and sounded like me do this, it's something I and many others needed growing up and I'm so glad kids are going to have this representation growing up from this show and many others and many to come, I hope people realize how important this episode is

🚨 SPOILERS BELOW 🚨
Amity is growing concerned about how Luz is acting

And then Luz does what she always does, goes head first into everything. She starts destroying the tunnel and saying stuff like "it wasn't suppose to happen like this"
Look at Amity in these two pics

She's realizing that her Grom fear is coming true. Luz is rejecting her and she can't change Luz's mind. Amity is so heartbroken here.
DANA, PLEASE DON'T MAKE AMITY FEEL LIKE THIS AGAIN. IT HURTS MY HEART SEEING HER LIKE THIS.
"Yeah, this was stupid. I mean...Us... Dating? That is stupid."
The sadness in her voice while saying it broke my heart. And then her wiping away her tears. She really wanted to believe that Luz liked her, but she was wrong. She got her hopes up and Luz went and crushed them.
Even though Luz never meant to hurt Amity, she did and that's why she had this reaction after Amity said that
The look of "oh no. I just royally screwed up." And before Luz had time to reply
Hooty pops up. TBH, that's how I felt during that scene. A crying disaster.
Then, Hooty goes and quotes Shakespeare trying to leave the house (which I was laughing at cause out of all the people in the house, I wouldn't except Hooty to do that)
Because of the bird worm (sorry) leaving the house, he almost hurt Luz and Amity. Luckily, Eda and King were watching and King was able to save them with his destructive roar and we get this beautiful animation
Luz finally gets that loving glance to Amity. And just the animation here is so beautiful.

Ugh, my heart.
